— While a hack was going from Carroll
ton, Miss., to Greenwood, one night last
week, it was attacked by two robbers, One of

—Dr. Jacob Bigelow remarked at the din
ner of the Massachusetts Medical Society,
that he was indebted for his good health to
the joint agencies of temporance, hard work,
and abstinence from medicine. .
—Deep sea soundings off the Island of St.
Croix, West Indies, reveal the fact that no
bottom is found at a depth of 6,000 feet only
a mile and a half from the shore, from which
it is inferred that St. Croix is the apex of an
immense submarine mountain. Laying" a
submarine cable In that vicinity will be a
difficult job.
— Charles F. Wood, the young woman
who wore men’s clothes in New York for
five years without her sex being suspected
is to appear in the courts as prosecutor, in
order to determine the question whether a
womau may not with impunity wear any
clothes she chooses.
— The National Board of Trade, in session
at Philadelphia, is discussing the Question

amended that ihe entries and appraisals of
imported goods belonging to parties resident
at interior ports, may be made at the point
of destination, instead of at the ports of ar
rival.
—A monster cannon, presented by the
Sultan to Queen Victoria, has bean received
at Woolwicu arsenal. ^The balls accompa
nying it are of granite, and weigh six hun
dred and fifty' pounds each. They are simi
lar to those'described in Gibbons’'“Rise and
Fall of the Roman Empire” as being used by
Mahomet II. at the siege of Adrianople, in

—It i9 reported in Paris, on good authority,
that Napoleon ill. is as well disposed to re
cognize^ the rights of our naturalized citizens
as Bismarck, and as ready to make a treaty in
the matter, securing to all Frenchmen who may
be citizens of three years’ standing in these
States, the privilege to visit France without
molestation, even if they had emigrated to
evade the performance of their military duties.
General Dix is said to be in communication
with the French Government on this interesting
subject.
—At the Limerick Sessions in Ireland a
man named Roche charged two men named
Collins with an assault, and called his own
lather as a witness. The mother of the
prisoners, exasperated at the prospect of her
two sons being sent to prison, gave expres
sion to her feelings in a maiedlotion, praying
that when old Boche left the witness box he
might be paralyzed. The.pld man, excited
and agitated at the seene,- was actually smit
ten with paralysis in hie side and had to be
taken to the hospital. Earnest entreaties
were made to Mrs Col line that the would re
move her corse by spitting on Roche, bqt the
bereaved mother sternly refused to treat
-nalsv by salvation, and 1 Roche is Will in the
