W<R(* pleased to leant front the proceed
ings of the Convention which assembled In
Columbia, 8. C., on Monday last, that the dis
agreements which threatened to distract and
divide the party in that State have been
happily reconciled, and that the Democracy
of the gallant Palmetto State is now a nnit
in support of the great national movement
for the restoration of the Constitution and
the resoue of the Government from the
hands of the Jacobins. The discord which
for the month past bad manifested itself in
the discussions of the press of the State
seems to have grown out of the action of a
Convention held in April last, whioh in the
then attitude of political affairs favored the
acceptance of qualified negro suffrage.

Montgomery, Ala., June 11.—On the 5th
of June a paper of this city contained the
following paragraph:
“We are requested by the soldiers on duty
at this place to state that at the nigger car
pet*bag »nd scalawag meeting held at the
capitot on Saturday night, the soldiers gave
three groans for Grant, three cheeis for Mc
Clellan, and three cheers for Andrew John
son. Thei were given by the soldiers with a
hearty good will, and rolled from the capitol
to the arteeian- basiu. YVe are also reqqest-
ed by these soldiers to state that any aiser-
tion contrary to this 19 a base falsehood.
These soldiers tay they are while men, and

wags.”
In consequence of the above the following
order, which appeared yesterday, has been
issued by Gen. Shepherd, commanding the
Sub-District of Alaoama:
Headquarters Sub Distbict of Ala., )
Montgomery, Ala , Juut> (kb, 1868. J
General Orders No. 22.
The issue of the Montgomery Advertiser
of yesterday contains a statement which, it
io the slightest degree irue, deserves the re
probation of every right min led soldier io
this sub-district. The statement allnded to
appladds, incites and stimulates soldiers to
insubordination and disgrace by the publi
cation that some have uttered against the
General of our army, to whom the country
has awarded such u commission for his pre
eminent services iu suppressing a rebellion
aimed at tbe destruction of our republic and
our freedom as a people. The soldiers in
this sub-district are therefore assured that it
is a plain duty to rebuke iu a becoming man
ner every effort made by the publishers of
newspapers, or by other individuals, teudiug
to incite disgraceful acts aud insubordina
tion, and also lo abstain from any expression
of political opinion as to persous or parties.
Thus may soldiers make manifest that they
are meritorious and incapable of being led
astray by tbe evil minded, and least of all
by those who have caused the pall of death
to cover a million soldiers.

Last year’s crop averaged two-tbirda cot

That was in Marion Connty. It was planted
early and was checked in setting, and had
gohe up. Three miles distant I bsw two or

reason. The reoent rains are seasonable,
and the prospect fice for a two-third crop of

We are informed that whilst a negro man,
one Dill and hie wife, were sitting in Dill’s
bohse, they were fired upon. The negro

wounded. Dill, we believe, was the Sena

exerting ranch influence among the negroes
of Kershaw District.
Since writing tbe above, we learn that
qnite an excitement prevails in the neigh
borhood of the killing, which is near Long-

Kershaw line. We believe that tbe military
authorities here have rent a guard to pre
serve the peace. It appears that some time
ago, Dill made a speech lo the negroes.
Wherein he told them, that if he sbonld be
killed, they must avenge hie death upon tbe
Whites, and kill them "from the cradle up.
The negroes, we are informed, have stopped
work in that locality, and threaten mischief.
But we take it for granted that the military
will easily pnt down any violopce on tbeir
