Faasral Rerrleea sf Mr.
Tbs funeral oarrlees of Ms lata Theodora Biota.
Isq., took place at St. johs’f Cathedral yesterday
afternoon, and wara of a most imprsaBrs character.
There was A large attendance of the relatives end
grinds of the deceased.
At twenty minutes past ftee the remains were
brought Into the Church—Messrs. D. A. O’Byrne, H.
J. Thommasaoo, Jno. B. Dillon. Vn. Bankin, John
Flannery, Wm. J. Clements, B. F. McKenna, and 8.
P. Whitehead, pall bearers.
The services for the dead were then read by Bev.
Father P. Duffcn, alter which Bev. Father Abram
Byan, who had been requested to deliver the funeral
discourse, advanced in front of the ooffin and said
that death needed no text, the* coffin was text enough,
and that if ho could consult his feelings he would be
oil ant, but as he was asked by the friends of the de
ceased to say a lew words he would do so.
In his eloquent language he alluded to the short
ness of life, and advised his hearers to imitate the
example of the deceased, and be prepared when their
hour came. The dece&sd died as be lived—he died
happy death. He lived iu the Church and died lu
the Church. He loved the Church and the Church
loved him—that Church unlike others does not leave
those who dia in it at the grave, bat follows the
Christian to the land of peace, and wafts s prayer
which will be a help and an assistance to those who
have departed. She knows that death is no barrier
her prayers, and that those who are dead and gone
bra as dear and as open to her prayers as those
aha looks npon to-day. The Church will not forget
him whose body lies berore us. r He has gone
jai among those by whom be tfas loved end re
spected—left a world of sorrow for one of joy. For
him and those who die like him it is going out of
darkness into light—going out of the shadow and
clouds into a land where s cloud never floated and a
shadow was never seen—going out of e land swspt by
storma into one of peace and happiness—going off of
stormy ocean to where no wreok has ever been
found—gone out of s land where temptaiiona ever
meat us and lead us away from God, into one where
Satan fell and where bis power will never be felt any
more.
The speaker concluded his remarks by again
referring to the virtues of the deceased, and Im
ploring the blessing of God upon his spirit.
Father Byan only spoke for nine minutes, and bis
remarks were of such s character that we regret that-
we cannot give them In full.
The remains were then taken to the Cathedral
Cemetery and Interred with the nanal ceremonies,
Bev. Father Dufau officiating, having accompanied
the remains to the Cemetery as a token of his partic-
ulai friendship.

A Military tomwlsalua Investigating
Petition for tne Removal sf tlte city
Officers.
Several days ago we mentioned that a petition,
signed by about four thoubaud persons, bad been
sent to Gea. Meads, praying for the removal of
Mayor Anderson, the Chief of Police, his lieuten
ants, and numerous other city officials.
The petition bad attacned to it a large number of
names of respectable citizens, whose views are very
mach of a Conservative character, who are pleased
with the olty officials and opposed to Radicalism iu
every form, and their names appearing on tue pe
tition denouncing the municipal officers and clamor-
log for their removal because of their non-Badlcai
views, excited suspicion, and Gen. Meade determined
to have an investigation. A number of officers, as
mentioned exclusively in the News and Herald of
yisterday, were sent here for the purpose. Yester
day as we learn, the commission was organized
with Captain Somerbaycs us president. A number
of gentlemen and others whose names appeared on
the petition, were summoned before it to ascertain ~
their signatures were genuine, and to ascertain the
authors of tbe petition. Many of those summoned,
state that they bad not signed the petition; had never
seen It, and proved that they did nut write their
names in the style that they appeared npon the
petition. They were required to make affidavits
their assertions. The petition has three thousand
five hundred and some odd names attached to It, and
tbe signatures give proof, almost conclusive, that
abont six persons signed all of the names, disguising
and scattering their handwriting abont tbe petition
in order to avoid detection. There were other
points brought to light, but as “quill drivers’
not allowed in Military Commissious, our reporter
was unable to gain snub information concerning them
he would like to have previous to laying them be
fore the public.
Another eneaklng scheme of tbe Radicals here bas
been foiled. .
