who witnessed the affair, excepting, of course, the
husband and wife, we gathered the following state
ment: “This morning, Mrs. Higgins, for whom I
work, oslled me up stairs and told me that Mr. Hig
gins was going to shoot her, end then said how many
slugs he had in hia pistol. .He was sitting down there,

ner of the room), end she standing np near the door,
(at the northeastern oorner of the room). He told
me to go back, and I turned around and ha shot. I
was so astonished I turned around again, and saw
him ahoot ail the other times. The first shot I didn't
see, but it struck bar in the left side, and turned her
a little, and made her reel and nearly fall. He then
shot her in the back sod she fell. He then stood over
her and shot her, first, in one nrm, and then in the
other.”
From lady relatives cf the sufferer, and from others
we learned that Higgins had frequently threatened to
kill hts wife; that about two weeks ago, when she waa
enciente, and left hlB house and went to a neighbor's,

killed her was that she loved her daughter better than

POLICE COURT aiAQHAL.
One of the force was charged by the Lieutenant with
neg eot of duty, iu allowing a prlsoner tc escape from
the barracks. The policeman left bis post at tbe gate
and went into the stable during theiain, aud the
prisoner, taking advantage of this favorable opportu*

beyond the grave gave speed to bis feet, and he has

The fine body of men constituting the police force
of Savannah, were marched to the ExcUauge yester
day morning, and then and there received their due
afowance of greenbacks. Their bearing was re
markably soldierlike, and we have no doubt they all
fiel better, and will make better policemen, from the
fact of having some of the “filthy lucre” in their
pockets.

Not many minutes elapsed after the shooting before
policemen T. Clark and Wm. Liugg came up and ar
rested Higgins. He did not resist, and was carried

Fine Potatoes.—Messrs. Purse & Thomas
she wed as yesterday a specimen of Irish potatoe,

Savannah, Skidaway and Seaboard Rajl-
soad.—The Chief Engineer of thia road, Mr. John
Poatell, advertises in another column that sealed
proposals will be received at his office until tbe first
day of July for the building and completion, (ex
clusive of rolling stock,) of this road.
Assault with Intent to Kill.—It U un
derstood that the case of Charles H. Hopkins, Jr.,
indicted for 'having sometime during last fall| as
saulted John B. Hayea with intent to kill, will be
called In the Superior Conrt to-day.
Bankruptcy.—'The District Court of tbe
United States, yesterday, In the matter of Meyer
Newmark, in bankruptcy, on petition of one of the
creditors, ordered the bankrupt to show cause before
Register Hesaeltine. on the 17th of this month. In

nesses summoned.
