BATTLE OF GETTI8BURO.
Bt OSHAJC D. OOBMAN.
Hark 1 whit load thunders wake their alf,
And what quick rattle thrills around,
O’er held and wood, and rising hill,
A rapid, tierce, contending sound 1
Fair Gettysburg the soene displays,
Of cannoned irenoA and bristling walls;
Wnen loud, rude battle’s sounding crump,
To deatn and carnage fiercely calls.
See, yon dark line in stately tramp,
Survey the fatal hills before;
Mark yon sharp line of bayonets gleam,
And list the cannon's deafening roar.
Now soon the conflict growe space—
“Obarge, charge!*' re-eehoes to the sound;
Bight onward rush the ret'ran hosts,
And on the ramparts soon are toned.
Lowd thunders now the battle's din.
And treinoilog peals the cannon’* wrath;
Now hand to liana the leglbns Join,
And death shrieks wildly o’er their path.
"Back, back, ye dastard, hireling band I”
Bings out amid the cannon.peals;
When on they surge the Southern lines,
’Midst flame, to where the column reels.
They fly fast o’er the smoking p'ains,
before the Southrons’ march of death,
Like bummer in the Libyan wilds.
Before the Ktingin'* parching breath.
To right and lett ou either flank,
Ljng6treet and Hul extend the scene.
While Lee and Ewell drive the front,
Where late the stubborn hosts had been.
Now far and wheat-crowned stretch the hill;
Anew blaze forth the fiery plains;
Now quick they rally for the charge—
Hist, how the fierce death abower rains!
A thoh«and banners flaunt the breeze,
Tne "stars and bars" are waving there,
Amid the countless bayouet gleams.
That pierce the smoke of that death air.
See, how the dark gray lines are crowned
WithhalioB from the battle clouds 1
See, how cannon'd hills are wrapt
With their death omen'd fiery shrouds i
And, mark how tierce the conflict grows,
How grapple legions in their ire,
While carnage, with her bloody slain,
la building battle’s funeral pyre.
-Now, night, with her pale vlrgln-moon,
Shone ou a thousand soldier graves,
While many a coree lay ghastly still,
Browned in her fiery battle waves.
Dim was the light on their new monads,
Nor heard they then tue armies tramp,
Nor saw they those star •banners flaunt
Their farewell o’er the lone death-camp.
Fobt Delaware, July 9th, 1863.
