» Midsummer'* Day.
L ?<$** TH* or*,
■which is frequently called Mid-
its happening effneer th* thaw of
itottce.
John’s, *or Midsummer-Day, undoubtedly ac
quired Importance from the oig'tradition which ren
dered the summer solstice sacred among th* Indo-
Europeans; “The midsummer and midwinter fires,”
Biysrs Writer on “Folk-lore,” ‘•oommemorstlig the
culmination of the sub’s course, are the most univer
sal of all the Aryan religious ceremonies that have
now become mere popular amusements, with a sense
or luck attached to them. Mr. Kelly’S ‘Indo-Euro
pean Traditions'beat'explain the astronomical force
of this rite, coupled with the rolling of the fiery
wheel down a hill-si Je, as it were to show the down
ward course of the sun. The lane of fire, over
which the young men leapt sad animals were driven,
seems to have been la use everywhere from ancient
Rome to farther Germany, and curiously shows how
the lde* of inspiring good lack is the most reel mode
of preserving a eiguldcsut custom. Ia Lancashire
these fires got mixed with a notion of Purgato< y, and
in the Tylde a moor still bears Ihe^uame. The Land’s
End used to be aglow with three fires; and at Pen
zance hobfires blazed in the evening, while firework!
were showered upon the young men and maidens
who played In and out at tbread-my-neadte, little
thinking that Ovid had thus leapt through the fires in
the streets of Borne.” These rights in some parts ot
the world slill exist. They may b# seen in Germany
sad Savoy. Luck is probably the power which In
spires them; for Luck baa ever been the god of many,
and hence the preserver of heathen rites, though
purified and adapted to a new religion.
As St. John the Baptist was “a bright and shining
lght,” It is probable that the fires of midsummer-
day were continued by the converted heathen as
proper for the celebration of his feast. Thus bon
fires long were the features of St. John’s Day.
8t John’s Day was early marked by carious cus.
t uns, resembling ia a measure those of May Day and
Whitsuntide. Divination was practiced, and various
gimes and amusements were Indulged In for the
amuiement of the simple folk, who ei joyed such
sports. It used to be Bald that a rose plucked on St
John’s eve would be fresh at Chrlstmatf; and that by
faating and watching on that night the spirits of those
who were going to die and of those who were going
to bo married, might be seeD. Maidens also need to
gather a moss-rose at this time, and place it in the
bosom to free whether It would wither; if it did the
lover was untrue. The question arises: were any of
the lovers true ? Bat the miidens may have known
how to keep tho loses lu their bosotUB as fresh as the
roses in iheir cheeks. Gathering the trefoil and
adorning a white wether with flowers was a custom of
loug continuance in Spain. The beautiful ballad to
which this custom gave birth, was sung by the maid
ens, for centuries, along the banks of the Gaidai
quiver. We give a fow lines from it:

Tbe good St. John was the patron ealnt of the Mil

the Hospitallers, the rivals of the Knights ot tbe

the overthrow of Bols Gailbertaud Ralph de Vlpout
by Ivanhoe. Thl< rivalry long continued, The Order
of the Hospital, however, survived that of the Temple.

the senior editor of the Rapubdcan may a9«ure it of

His residence was tne city of Boston, and at the

shining qualities, foreshidowiog his future

and imagination, enabling him to write vivid deso. ip-
