Should you e’er go to France—ai of cource you In
tend—
(Though the Great Exposition is now at an end)
And in Paris should stroll—as I’m certrin you
will—
In the Gardens adorned with such Requisite skill.
To call them “Flysian” is scarcely to eacn
What the grammars entitle a “figure of speech”—
Don’t fail, ere you go for a moment to steal
A look at the spot called the Jardin Mobile.
'Tis a place of enchantment—a rural retreat
Waere Nature and Art in such harmomy meet
To form au Elysium of music and flowers.
Of moss-covered degrottos and fairly like bowers,
Where lamps blaza in tulips, ana glow-worms o f
gas
Uluiniue the roses snd gleam iu the grass—
That, merely to see it one cannot but feel
II there’s Heaven on earth, 'Us the Jardin Mo
bile.
But wait until midnight, or, aay one o'clock,
Wnen hither by hundreds the citizens flock,
And strangers unnumbered are airolling around
In the serpentine walks of the beauUtuiground;
Just wait if you please, Ull the dance is begun,
And then, at tbe height of the frolic and fun
Pray look where tne bacchanal* caper and reel,
Ann aay what you thluk of the Jardin Mobile.
IT.
Tbe music—the maddest that ever you heard—
{strikes up from the stand and sway at tbe Word.
The daucers revolve—'Us the watz that is all;
The same you have witnessed at many s ball;
There's nothing extremely surprising in this,
Tbe motion is swift, but there's little amiss;
You merely remark: “There is plenty of zeal
Id the daucers who dance In the Jardin Mobile.
But see! where the people are closing about
Two brazen-browed women—and bark to tbe ahout.
"La Can-can! They're at it I"—no wonder yon
state,
One foot on the pavement—now two in the air.
A cockney intent on this rarest of shows,
Ketreais from the shoe that is giazmg his nose I
Good lack 1 till ho dies he'll remember the heel
That spoiled his new hat in tbe Jardin Mobile.
There’s drinking and gambling at many a stand;
There’s feasting aud flirting on every hand;
The Paphian Queen it were easy to tell.
Is the abbess to-night of you anchorite cell;
And the marvelling Turk (for the Sultan is here)
Cries "Allah! Meshallah /—These Christiana are
queer ;
Such orgies aa these very plainly reveal
Why they don’t take their wives to the Jardin Mo
bile.”
“A pity 1” you sigh, and a pity it is
Such revels such shame such a gaideu as this;
Where all that is charming in nature and art
Serves only to snlly and harden the hearts,
• ‘ The DrtVil’s own hot bouse’’ yon muiingly say,
While turning in sadness and sorrow away,
Reflecting that ein. as you potently feel
Is Uie thriftiest plant in the Jardin Mobile.
