I never In my jnvenile days possessed that blind,
Implicit faith which would enable me to accept the
generally current doctrine that eels take actual en
joyment in the process of skinning, but though not
an adherent of that tenet of piscatorial belief, I was
often a conformed as the Quakers say, and hence
angled with live bait a good deal, though the
squirming of the impailed victims always did cause
me to whip the repulsive object Inio water soonaa
possible. I was reading the other day of a new
foreign method for cooking a fowl: Pluck the
feathers of a live fowl, place in a cold oven, heat
gradually; wheu sufficiently baked, draw, season to
taste, Ac. That’s worse than they treated poor
Ridley and Cranmer, for they were allowed to blow
tieniselvee up with gunpowder. The inventor of
that recipe ought to be hung, or chok.d with chicken
bones.
But this Is neither here nor there. With no sym
pathy whatever with ihe old grandmothers who form
socities, and mourn over tbe opening of live oysters,
and who, If they had their way, would establish dis
eased cat infirmaries and Refuges for disabled anil
destitute swiue, and adopt measures lor the amelii-
ration of the condition of vagrant goats, and requesi
laws for thoroughly auaenhetizing Osh before hook-
iugthem. But any person not actually vicious, or
whose sensibilities have not been calloused bv habit,
has an antipathy for unnecessary cruelty to animals.
The man who will torture a dog merely for sport,
you can set down as a cruel father and husband.
Wheu You see a man go out of bis way to brush ofl
or even kill a fly that is torturing another man’o
horse, you can generally be sure he is a kind neigh
bor and good ciuzsn. From my bow-window in Bel
gravia Square 1 ofieu sue boys with the stuff in them,
la embryo, of which pirates and murderers are made,
bricking harmless dogs. O d Uicams’ boy the other
day, caught a tartar. He flaug shriek at s dog of
deceptive dirtiness, but one of the pure breod, who
can lake down a cow, give him time. He had young
Ctcejus by thd leg in a jiffy, and would have fiuisheu
him had not Hyperion, who is courting Uuejas'
daughter, constrained a negro to pull off the enraged
bull.
It especially goes to my very heait to see a horse
abased. 1 feel not merely indignation but sorrow.
Nobleat of tbe train
That wan ou man, the fiight-penormibg horse.
I never could get over King David’s boughing the
horses of his enemies; and if it was n‘t that he had
a precedent in one of Joshua's campaigns, where the
lacier acted under thediiect orders of the Lord,
should have no use for such a man. But, then, you
know, for Borne mysterious Divine purpose, the con
querors of those day8 used to pass their .p.isonero
under saws and harrows, and do lots of things now
obsolete. I am glad I did n’t live, a hiath.n, in
those days. Ju6t think of iny being thrown under a
harrow, with my old gouty leg, while the underelrap
pers were ham-stringing Camilla, who is now pawing
impatiently in the stable, waiting for her master to
get well, so she can once more swiftly Bconr across
the plain, like her namesake, the Queen of the Volaci,
who, they say, weut bo fast she did n’t bend down
the wheat-staiks, but brushed over them, which gait
mast have been destructive of wtavils.
I have nothing to say against the discipleB of hif-
pophagy. They may eat dogs if they wish; for it is
certain, with the meat fetching only Tour sous a
pound, they wilt never get decent horses into the
soup-ketLle, and if they will eat off all ihe old plugs
it will have a tendency to improve the stork.
I would not have anybody go so far iu consideration
for a horse as the tyrant Caligula went with his steed
Iucitatus. They say he made him priest-consul, in
vit’d him to dinner, and fed him on gilded oats out
of a gold dish. But 11 ko the style of young Alex
ander, who lamed the fiery Bec.phalus, when all the
jockeys had given him over.
From my bow-window, the other day, I saw a white
ignoramus balk his horse by too much whipping.
The animal wouldn’t stir, and the driver’s wrath
arose. He laid the blows on thick and heavy, till the
spirited but obstinate beu-,1 ieared and plunged, and
finally broke a thill, to my great gratification. A sen
sible looking negro, evidently to the manor bom,
and who, I'll wager my cratch, Isn't a politician,
came up, and .oiuoteered to set the team to right&
The irascible driver reluctantly consented, and in two
minutes the negro had tie shaft repaired wirh a
hitch halter, and the horse trotting nimbly off, as
though he liked It. You can get two-forty out of a
good hotse without hurting him a bit, and you can
whip, and jerk, and ill-use the same horse back to six
miles an hour, aud hard woik at that, if you want to.
‘A merciful mau is merciful to his beast.” And
there is less excuse for abusing a horse than any
other animal. Rarey, and all the o her horse tamers
and trainers,Lorn Alexander down, will tell you you
can soon train almost any kind of a horse, to do his
beat, without punlshmon*. The natural disposition
of a horse is to do his duty, when once he has been
taught it. But halt the homes have their hides
tanned and their joints all stiffened before they are
old enough to be pat to the draft; and the driving
and rioing horses are over-ridden and over-driven,

Bavannah Market.
Orrxoi or xn Raws ahd] herald.)
Savant ah. June 25—0 P. M. 1
Cotton.—Oar market exhibited some little Inquiry
daring the latter part of last week, caused by tbe ad
vance in Liverpool, and a more than corresponding
rise in prices la New York, but has again relapsed
Into its summer dullness. Had our factors given way
materially, we should dou'itl.sa hare had more doing
as we are now approaching a period when it is ■op
posed that oar own spinners will be compelled to
tike freely of the light stock on hand. We find here
a very slim offering stock, anl that is composed gen
erally of the lower qualities, very few lota grading
over Low Middling, which Is held variotuly at from
28>£@30c. In fact, we have no quotations to give
which will afford any proper criterion of our market,
and we forbear giving them, merely stating that Good
Ordinary cannot be purchased under 27c, while 25c la
the offered price.
C op accounts are generally more favoiWble, and
while they are so, there is no disposition evinced to
place the general estimate higher than last year; in
fact, two and a quarter millions seems the favorite
figure. Calling from all our advlcsa, we eee no rea
son for apprehension of much lower prices, and if as
New York clrcalara indicate, that American spinners
want 10,900 bales per week until Ihe new crop comes
in freely, namely, bxj ten weeks at that rate, or
100,000 baleB, there is eveiy reason to btlicve in high
er rates. There seems to ns a good reason for such
an impression, when money is so abundant, and as
we see by the Times’ Commercial Report, that more
aoUvity prevails in cotton goods, and that a still
greater degree is prophesied for next month. The
harvest promises well every where, SQd cheap food of
coarse fosters consumption of fabrics.
This countiy la, as far as'the price of cotton Is con
cerned, independent of Europe, and although au ad
vance there stimulates our markets here, still we
advance faster, and fall slower, and in less propor
tion on any news from over the water. Southern
markets are particularly strong; in fact, the great
NewOrletns only exhibits a stock of 11,000 balea.
In vitw of small sales and reducing stocks, it seems
to us that factors are shipping rather than sell at
forced prices, feeling great confidence lu the fatnre
of the article. We are, however, Indisposed to look
for extravagant prices, unless subsequent disaster be-
fals the growing crop.

Nineteen Negroes Drowned.
From a gentleman who reached our city yesterday
we learned the particulars, as far as prald be gaihered
up to the time of hie departure, of the drowning Of
nineteen negroes.
On Sunday lost a party of twenty-five negroes,
many of them nnder the influence of liquor, started
from Burgess’ Mill, on the Satllla River, in a small
sail-bout, to attend a mpettng at Jeffersonton. On tbe
way the boat, throngh tbe mismanagement of those
who were sailing it, capsized, and nineteen of tbe
party were drowned. The others saved themselves
by dinging to the boat until help arrived. Of those
drowned eleven were men, the rest women and
children. Everything was done to recover the bodies,
and up to two o’clock Wednesday afternoon eleven
bodies had been found.
Mayor’s Court.
* Hon. E. O. Anderson. Presiding.
Thursday, June 25.
Thera were but two cases before His Honor in the
Police Court yesterday. Daniel Holliland, a seaman,
was charged with being drunk and disorderly in tbe
bar-room of witness, who testified that Daniel came
Chatham Court of Ordlmmry.
Judge D. A. O’Ethne, Presiding.
This court was in session yesterday.
A sh-.rt time since Mrs. Catharine A. Paterson ap
plied throngh her counsel for the “Widow** Support,”
the law allowing the widow the ritfht to apply for a
support for twelve months, the am innt granted to be
in proportion to tbe euppoeed solvency of the estate
of her deceased husband.
A commission to set aside the “Widow’s Support,’’
consisting of five responsible and respected citizens
was appointed by Judge D. A. O'Byrne. The com*
mission granted her $1,000 in money, tbe pony phaeton
and two poDle?, and her furnitnre.
Messrs Guerard and Paine* counsel for a number
of creditors of the estate, filed a caveal -a few days
after, objecting to the action of the commission ap
pointed by tho Court of Ordinary, and to the return
made by them, on the ground that the amount award
ed was too large.
Yesterday, iu the matter of ihe estate of James T.
Paterson, a petition of Catherine A. Paterson, widow
of testator, for maintenance, motion was heard to
allow her maintenance, pending au appeal from this
court, caveat above mentioned having been filed by
the attorneys for the creditors.
Mr. Lloyd, for the petitioner, argued that Mr*.
Paterson was entitled to a maintenance during the
appeal, the cacact being really an appeal from the
Court of Ordinary.
Messrs. Gaerard and Paine, for the creditors,
argued to the contrary; *h»t**>e meaning of the law
a cavaet wa9 not an appeal; that the law stated that
on a return of the commission to set aside a Widow’s
Support, it required six month* before tho Anal
judgement could be given, and if the motion was al
lowed, the intention of the law was null and void.
Tbe Court took time to consider upon the points
of the case, which are of a somewhat novel character.

dismissed the prisoner upon his paying wagon hire,
