fellows, hut the latter are constantly
Seending to ifhelr level.
—Every yearuhe result of the Derby la
telegraphed to I ndia, where thousands of
pounds are pending on the race. / ..
. ,--It 13 expected Chat, the Union Pacific Rail
road -;,ll he completed next year, yhich will be
a tw^ve.aonth in advance of the time fixed
upon/ It is carried forward at-the rate of four-
teenpilesa week.
e Marquis of Hastings, after winning
rench Derby, before quitting Paris, left
0 francs in the hands of the Jockey Club,
hich 7,500 francs are for the poor of Paris,
2,500 francs for. the English church at
filly.
ftlyUlie fiftieth, national German mu
ral was held aF'Cologne, when for
■ee flays over seven hundred musicians and
gars, finder the direction of Ferdin and
Iter, performed the best modern and classical
marie.
—The duties of a policeman in Memphis
have become as dangerous as the deadly field
of battle. Within the last four months six offi-
Cdfcrhsve beeri'killed while in the discharge of
their duty, and six more severely wounded; iu
all about twelve per cent, of the average police
force who have suffered death or maiming at
the hands of actual or would-be assassins.
—It is related that during the recent visit of
Prince Napoleon Bonaparte to the arsenal at
Vienna, two Austrian soldiers, armed with a
new rifle, were ordered out for practice in his
presence, and within the space of one minute
the two men placed forty-three balls in the
butts without missing once, at three hundred
yards. Such shooting at Sadowa might have
changed considerably the present map of Eu
rope.
—Western Indians are uncommonly active
on the Upper Missouri in killing wood-choppers;
and to keep off other choppers they have
burned the wood on the banks of the Yellow
Stone. They are burning wood-piles, too,
-meaning to keep away steamboats, which they
justly regard as the moat formidable. of the
white man’s inventions. The Sioux are busy
stealing horses, and find the pursuit profitable.
The red men who are taken red handed meet
with do. mercy.
A Weonged Husband’s Teekibi-e Re
venge.—The Winchester (Va.) Times has
the following details of the tragical affair
which occurred in that county on Wednes
day last :
. ; The parties in the affair wer3 Mr. George
/CrimT—r, al citizen of the county residiog in
Petticoat Gap. and a man named Seacrist,
I a native of Georgia, who has been living
: here for some time. It appears that Sea
crist was suspected of having improper io-
timacy.with Olowser’s wife, and on Wed
nesday morning Clowser pretended to start
for Winchester, bat upon returning found
Seacrist and his wife together in the woods.
Being exasperated he fired on Seacrist, the
shot taking effect; he fired a second shot.
Which killed him. He was then abont to
kill the guilty woman, bat she, throwing
her arms about his neck, begged him to
spare her life-for the sake of her children.
He could not overcome the appeal. On
Mr.'Clowser came to Winches
ter and sfitfendereA' himself to he proper
authorities, and is now confined in jail.
