"'The Day We Celearate,” and Those
who Too Often Dbank the Toast.—Saturday being
“the day we (used to) celebrate,” a number of our
Afiic citizens and white men and women drank the

Didn’t Come Off.—Owing to the absence
of Mr. Tony Clere, the match game of billiards ad

Saturday night, Mr. Levy, who keeps a clothing store

dijeovering the theft Mr. L. sent his clerk in search

SAiunDAY, July 4.
Saturday being the 4th day of duly, which returns
annually at stated periods, was celebrated at the Ex
change with the usual imposing ceremonies, the va
rious functionaries of the law representing the offi
ces s of the Police Court being present upon the festive
occasion. The exercises of the hour was begun with
the usual “entrs’’ headed by the grand marshal, the
crowd in the chamber uncovering as the body passed
into the area sacred to municipal justice. After a
lew seconds passed in survey of the crowd, the Mar
shal in an audible voice, holding in his right hand the
baton of office, and in his left a paper, called the
name of Jane Browne, (white), whom he charged
with being drunk, disorderly, and firing two shots
from a pistol on the premises of witness, on Thursday
night last. It was evident that Jane having lost her
almanac, and her reason to a considerable extent,
confounded that day with the day ever to be remem
bered, the 4th of America, on which day such harm
less diversions as getting drunk, being disorderly
and firing pistols, fireworks and “sich” are highly
commendable and generally observed. Jane in this
cise having taken time by the forelock, was herself
1 >cked up and went off like a musket, when charged
$5 for tbe amusement.
John Benner appeared in tbe person of his wile,
being charged with being drank and disorderly in
the street. Mrs. B. said that John’s condition was
such in consequence of ill treatment at the bands of
the pollca that he coaid not appear; that he hadn't
spoken a word since he was carried home, and that
she had sent for the doctor. This statement was evi
dently a “rose’’ of John’s better half, for an officer
being dispatched to find ont John's condition, ie-
turned a “non est inventus,'* and bis bond was de
clared forfeited.
Walter Lacey, disorderly, and firing off bla pistol
in the street in anticipation of the 4th instant, was
fined $6.
Two } oaths, found in the innocent pastime of
panelling each other at a late hour in the ni ght, weie
fined $4 each. •
William Johnson, colored, came all the way from
Sister’s Ferry on a raft, to attend tbe grand demon
stration of the processionary Union League, had not
where to lay his head, and took quarters in a new
building ou Jones street. The wa’chman of the
building smelliog Bill Johnson afar off, “treed*’ him,
and Mr. JoQnson spent his “Fourth*’ and his quarter
in the Police Barracks.

Two Brothkbs Qcakbil and One is Stabbed
by the Otheb.—About ten o’clock Saturday night
last last two negroes, named respectively Josh Mid
dleton and John Dixon, who claim to be brothers,
had & quarrel, which resulted in the latter being ee"
verely stabbed in the arm by the former. Middleton
was arrested and carried to the Barracks. It appears
that Middleton, who is somewhat wealthier than
Dixon, loaned him a p»i r 0 f ghoas. Dixon w ore
them ont and returned them to Middleton in that
condition. This roused Middleton’s ire, and a quar*
rel commenced, resulting as above stated. Yesterday
corning Dixon went to the Police Barracks and
asked the officer on duty to let Middleton out, which
modest request was relused.

The Fourth of July.—This oncd great
ly celebrated day passed off slowly and in compar
ative quiet. The usual salutes we* e fired, and at in
tervals daring the day and night were heard the
explosions of pistols, rockets and fire-oraokers lit
off by diminntivd Africans who, doubtless, thought
it wa9 a glorious day, and that they were having a
lady friends went on some one of the excursions or

till the startling scream of the locomotive announced
the recall. After a day full of eDjoyment the happy
participants were returned to the city at twenty

A Family Row.—About two o’c’.ock yes
terday evening, the citizens residing in the vicinity
of Montgomery street and Bay street Lane, were
startled by loud and frequent screams of “murder. 1
A crowd was soon collected there, and found that the
cries proceeded from a house on the lane occupied by
two fimilids, consisting of Wickham, his wife and
grown son and daughter, and another man and his
wife. A low had occurred between the families, and
Wickham’s son fired a- pistol at the “head** of the
other family, and Wickham’s wife struck the man
over the head with a stick. A general row ensued,
ending in the Wiekham family wading into snd beat
ing the man and wife until tiiey were quite bloody.
Liquor and the Fourth of July was the cause of the
row. The Wickhams now have lodgings in the Bar
racks, and this morning will occupy a bench in the
Mayor’s Court room.
