Am Seen by General George Washington
In mi.
The "Southern tour" made by General Washington
in 1791 has been mentioned often by his biographers,
but none of those who have mentioned it have done
more than to refer to it. During his tour General
Washington kept a diary, which fortunately has been
saved ana now appears in baok form, edited by Hr.
Benson J. Lossing. Monday night, as stated by the
Hews and HeealD. Mr. W. 8. Bjgart entertained
the Georgia Historic*1 Society by reading extmvJ
from the book. The account of the General’s vial to
Savannah appears in the book, and aa it la of interest,
we publish it, only writing out the abbreviauona s
The General left Philadelphia on the 21*t of March,
1791, to make the trip, and after visiting all of Uxe
principal cities along the route, arrived at Paris-
burg, In Soatn Csrollni, on U>e 19tt» of May of tha
same year. [Purisbarg Is »»out tbirt, miles from

Boats were also ordered there by them for my ac

bafore we reached the city, where we were received
under every demonstration that could be given of
joy A respect. We were seven noore making the
passage, which is often performed in 4, though the
computed distance it 25miles. Illum’na at

which had been provided for the occasion, and par
took of a public dinner given by the citizens at the

13th of May—Dined with the Members of the Cin
cinnati at a puolic dinner given at the earns place,
and in the evening went to a dancing Assembly, at
which there were about one hundred well dressed
and handsome ladies.
14th of May—A little after 6 o'clock, in company
with General McIntosh, General Wayne, the Mayor,
and many others, (principal Gentlemen of the City;,
I visited ihe City, and the attack and defence of it in
the year 1779, under the combined forces of France
and the United States, commanded by the Count de
EsUiug and General Lincoln. To form an opinion of
the attack at this distance ot time, and the change
which has taken place in the appearance of the
ground by the cutting away of the woods, Ac., is
hardly to be done with justice to the subject, espe
cially as there is remaining scarcely any of the de
fences.
Dined to-day with a number of the Citizens (not
less than 20U) in an elegant Bower erected for the oc
casion on the Bank of the Biver below the Town. In
the evening there was a tolerable good display
fireworks.
Sunday. 15th of May—Alter morning service, and
receiving a number ot visitors from the most respect
able ladies of the place, (as was tbe case yesterday)
I set out for August*, escorted beyond the limit of
the city by most of the gentlemen in it, and dining
at Mulberry Grove, the seat of Mrs. Green; lodged at
one Spencer’s, distant 15 miles.
Sayauna standi upon what may be called high
ground tor this Country. It is extremely sandy, which
makes the walking very disagreeable, and the honses
uncomfortable in warm and windy weather, as they
are filled with dost whenever these happen. The
town oa three sides ii surrounded with cultivated
Bice fields, which have a rich and luxuriant appear
ance. On the 4ih, or backside, it is a fine sand. The
Harbor is said to be very good, and olten filled with
square-rigged vessels; bn»there is a Bar below, over
which not more than 12 water can be brought, except
at spring tides. The tide does not flaw above 12 or
14 miles above the city, though the Biver is swelled
by it more than double that distance. Bice and To
bacco (the las: of which is greatly increasing,) are the
principal Fxports. Lumber and Indigo are also ex
ported, but tbe latter is on the decline, and it is sup
posed by Hemp and Cotton. Ship timber, vis: Live
Oak and Cedar, is (and may be more so) valuable in
the exportation."
Doling the reading Mr. Bag*rt stated that the
house in which Washington lodged was (according
to tradition) the wooded house at. the corner ot Bar
nard and President streets, on the eastern side of the
square. He farther called tbe attention of the Socie
ty to the fact that Washington did not mention that
he was received with m salute of artillery, when at
other places he always noticed that he was received
in that way; and stated that the Chatham Artillery
aid give a salute, and he noticed it by afterwards
sending tnem two brass six-ponnders, which the
Company kept until 1664, when the guns which were
here-fbll into the hands ot the United States soldiers.

'he Negroes Drilling near the City—
What Does it Mean l
We learn that on nearly Sul day, a large
number ot negroe?, variously estimated at from six
to eight hundred, assemble on King’s plantation, five
miles distant, and listen to inflammatory speeches
from black scoundrels, and, afterward* drill. The
uegroes come from all the seUUments around, and
many go from this city. Ibflyhhve fife* and drams,
and t_e majority of them muskets or ahot gunr.
Those who are not thus prGVldfcdj & ave wooden mus

when stolen or otherwise obtained. A gentleman a
