The examination of the Public Schools commenced
on Wednesday last with the Arbory Hall Kfchool,
comprisjng the Primary and Intermediate depark
ments, having three hundred scholars and aix^teach-
erA The exercisis were very creditable to the lllxle
folks, and consisted of reading, spelling, arithmetic
geography and recitations in poetry, and declama
tions. The teachers of this echool are as follows r

The information dacket was first called and several
case3 of alleged violence of city ordinance in the re
fusal ef parlies to have their chimno-s cleaned by the
contractor after due notice, “non e$t, inventus*’ was
returned as to BIcL’all and Barney, colored. The
cases of John Clancy, white, and Mary Garnett, col
ored. wero dismissed, and Oiarinda Norman, colored*
was fined five dollars and costs.
TOLTCZ BCCKET.
King Johnson, colored, went into the watermelon
paten of afellow-freedman and stole therefrom two
of the luscious vegetables, valued ot seventy-five cents
eacb. Ho CuUght iu tha act and was ronton for
thirty days.
James Wilson, colored, having a little difficulty
with his wife, compromised himself and became
amenab e lo the la\v by going to 4^e premises end
striking witness. Ho was fined ten dol.'&rs or ten
d’ys in jail In default cf payment.
Aleck Natt, colored, who promises to be a thief of
the da:L-e;t hue, was charged with having tw<J whips
In hjs po.-sesaion snppo'aed to have been stolen,which
supposition turned out to be a fact. The property was
s’.olen irotn the store ot Mr. Neiillinger, who identi
fied It, and Natt was also identified as the boy wlio
etule them. He was sent on for thirty days.
Charles Green, colored, a boy hard y arrived at the
years of discretion,was charged with throwing stones
in the street and striking tha child of witness. His
tender y^ars saved, him from punishment, and he
was discharged with an admonition to go and sin no
more.
M try Woodruff, colored, was charged with disor
derly conduct—abusing witness in the street. This
c.isegrew out of the above, and was so Trivial in its
nature that His Honcr dismissed it, all the parties
being apparently satisfied with the decision.
THE MARS IE SCHOOL.
The examination of the Grammar and High scl
were commenced and con eluded Thursday. In the
Grammar school there are one hundred anti twenty-
five girls, and seventy-five girls In the High school.

Rhetoric. Kn.ilLh Grammar, Algebia, Philosophy and
La'.in. Several recitations in p:etry were excellently
Tendered by the older girls. The dumb b^ll-exercise,
closing with the “Anvil Chorus,” was very fine. This
physical ex ircise, every motion being Iu timelwltb
music, is very attractive^ but besides this, it isjia pjood
training for young girls, many of whom do not get
or will not take sufficient exorcise In their daily'rou
tine. j
Iu th- Grammar school, besides the recitations in
their usual studies, there was a beautiful little floral
scene called the ‘"Crowalag of the Queen,” Miss
MacDonald being the chosen queen. After a. contest
in spelling, each class presented a cake- to their
tvacher. The Superintendent distributed about
twenty 4 ‘Annual Certificates” to as many snccessful
scholars, and alter some remarks from Kev. Mr. Por
ter, a member oi the Board ol E location, the schools
were dismissed. The teachers ol thj Massie School
are; High School—B. Mallon, sapjrin eadent and
acting principal. Miss F. Dorsett ^ad Mies S. Jones,
assistants. Grammar School—Miss M. A. MoCarter,
principal; Miss Lizzie Mill=r and Misa M. L Har
ries, assistants.
DOYJ’ HIGH SCHOOL.
The closing exercises of this school ware ! com_
mencid at 9 o’clock yesterday morning, by the eexam'-
ination of t!.e scholars in the. higher department.
The following programme was observed:
Examination of a class in reading and parsing or
JEjop’s Fables. After the examination of this class*
tne teacher slated that it had shown great proficiency,
and that the members should be pht in de-ar at the

.The Algebra Claes was next examined; then the
Greek Class, then the Arithmetic Class, then the
Casr-ar Class, then the Virgil Class, then the Geometry

The declamation oxercises were concluded by Mas
ter V. Lebey, who bade farewell to his schoolmates in
a neat little speech, in which he paid a high comp i-
ment to his teachers for the interest they had mani
fested in his improvement.
Mr. B. Mallon, who, much to the regret of all
scholars, teachers and the Board of Education, b; .
tendered Lid resignation as Superintendent ^>f tLe' HHR
Public Schools, arose and complimented the scholars
tor their orderly conduct and good standing during
the past session. He stated that the present accom
modations only admitted of the Boatd receiving about
eight hundred scholars, but that the Board intended
to increase the schools so that thtee hundred more
might be admitted. He spoke of the management o 1 '
the teachers during the last session as being most
efficient, and then expressing the wish that the
schools would ever prosper, and his regret at leaving
the scholars to whom he was endeared, bode them a
good-bye. , ^
Mr. Baker, principal of the school, announced that
the Public Schools would be opened on tlie first Mon
day in October next, and then dismissed theechool.

It Is the custom lor an annual certificate to be
given to each scholar who, darirg the nine months
of the past session, has received six monthly certifi
cates for punctual attendance, goed conduct and well
recited lessons. The following named scholars in the

Death op an Old Pilot.—We are pained
to announce the death of Mr. Francis A. Hernandez,
aged 64 years, one of the oldest pilots of the port of
8lvannah. The sad event, took place at Brunswig
on the 9th tost., after a short illness. The deceased
was well and favorably known in commercial cir
cles, and had occupied a high place ia his profession.
For the past three years he had been pilot of the
United States Revenue steamer Nansemond, which
re.ponsible position. he had filled with credit to the
service and the profession. The officers of the steam
er all give their unqualified endorsement of the value
of his services as officer and qf his character as a
man. He leaves numerous relatlvee. His (nreral
will take place from the residence of his sister, op
posite the Police Barracks, at 3 P. M. this day.

Yesterday afternoon the living body of Mr.
Brennen, of Bainbridge. Georgia, was brought to
this city under &n escort of bayonets en route for
trial in the reconstructed and admitted State of
Florida. The prisoner was the Deputy Sheriff of the
city of Bainbridge, and shot a negro who had made a
furious onslaught Upon film whilo in the discharge of
his official duties.. Tbe civil authorities of the State
took immediate cognizant of the matter, and after an
impartial and extended investigation discharged the
prisoner. He was subsequently, arrested by the mil
itary;, authorities and tried by military commission,
for the same offence, and ^by them sentenced-to. a f

A Novelty Pic-Nic.—The Savannah
Gymnastic Club, an organization established for
physical education, will give a grand pic-nic at -Broad-
hackers, on July 13th. The gymnasts will bo under
the direction of Mr. Julius Kaufman, a proficient
in this school and an estimable citizen; supported by

Werner, F. Kobls and John Balieburg. This young
club make on this occasion their first debut in pub
lic. and arrangements will be perfected to make the
pic-nic a pleasant and agreeable pickets may
