While this is true of most of the sunlit hours,
still the nights are balmy and cool; yes, de

Town matters drag along quietly, slowly,
with nothing to ruffle the temper or disturb
the genial “phiz” ot our worthy Mayor. No
police reports, not even a dog imbroglio.
“The empire is peace," and it is Grant's no
blest impulse, (in a horn). So we go. The
merenants cannot complain of crowded
shops or well filled tills; but at sanset and
twilight hours our streets are enlivened by
pretty lasses, peering from matchless eyps,
graced by loving smiles—while gallant Lshnx
all away the noontide hours with favorite

With nothing to do ..
But fair women to woo.
And dreams of mat land of delight—
Whore scalawags, Haas,

Nor snakes, nor niggers shall blight. I
Then there is the “fishiog party” to pass
the time. Come to the rendezvous—a scene
of mirth and pleasure! Tnere boys and girls
lorget the sportive trout and brim. Throwing
aside the line and hook,
They fish for fmilss,
And loving wiles,
And enure Instead ot fish I 1
With looks askance.
They trip the dance.
And ogle, sigh and wish i

Colonel St. X-cBcr Grenfell.
A prisoner at the Dry Tortugas sends the
Galveston News the following account of the_|_hjive
treatment of Colonel Grenfell, and tho cir
cumstances ot his escape;
As far as ths punishment and torture of
prisoneis and soldiers, detailed in the article
published in the New York World of Novem
ber 1st, with the exception of one or two,ty
pographical errors, I assure you ’tia true in
each particular, and muoh.worse than therein
represented. Dunn did not lose his hand;
but lost the useof.it. Tbe soldier's finger
was not cut off, but Sustained an injury which
_ deprived him of its use. For that publica
tion Grenfell was placed in solitary confine'-;
meat, and heated with the utmost cruelty.
Being sick on one occasion, he went to dooe
tor's call. Tbe doctor refused to excuse
him. The doctor and every officer upon the'
Key hated him.-simp'y because he was un
conquerable. ‘ He tneu called upon the Pro-
voat Marshal of the post, stating
Tbe Provoat Marshal stated if the doctor did
not excuse him he could not, aod that be
would have to work. Grenfell stated be
would do what he could, aud left him.
He was placed at labor which a young man
could not perform, much less an old mau :
sixty-five years of age, and half-starved an
that. Not complying with tbe demand suita
ble to these who governed, he was taken to
the guard house, and tied up iu the broiling
sun during the morning. In tbe afternoon,
under an armed escort, bound in ropes, he
was hurried to the gulf stream, three officers
accompanying him, viz; Fred. Robinson,
Geo. A. Crabb, First ijieutenant, .Fifth ar
tillery, and A- Pibe; Second L euteoai
artillery, each armed with a ijiih’s ar
loaded with ball and powder. Every soldier
and prisoner was driven ioto the tort, bhc
there were some who viewed tbe affair From
the casemate’s embrasures. He was thrown
into the gulf, bound in cords, but managed
to keep above the water, soeiug which be
was pulled ont, and upwards of fifty pounds
of iron aud bpeks tied.to.his feet, aod sgian
cast into the sea. - This time he suok, and
when pulled out was in an almost lifeless
condition. This was overseen by the above
officers named, and a half-nigger by the
name of C. T. Jackson, ActingM. H.Regt,
at the post. Tois to an unarmed and de
fenceless old man over sixty-five years of
age. Many other parties were served in a
similar manner. Grenfell left hero in a
small boat some time since, owing to the
persecution which bad commenced against
him by C..C. QacConnell, the part
