barged with the murder of Ashbnrn. The
/sets will soon be made public officially,
which will shock the moral sense of the
country. Yonr correspondent is permitted
to anticipate the official expose.
THE FACTS.
So attention was paid to the death of Asb-
bute- At the time it occurred he was a
wretched outcast, forced to seek a home in a
negro brothel. When the report of his death
readied Washington, the parly machinery
was set in motion to manufactnre political
ripital, and to prove Southern barbarity,
which would justify Radical tyrrany. Ggn.
Meade, being applied to, dispatched Major
Smyth, of his staff, to Columbus, to exam he
and report the facia, offering $40,000 rewagd
lor toe apprehension ot the murderers.
Major Smyth caused the arrest of a la: _
number of citizens, but failed to obtain a clul

Carious facts are stated touching the pay
the detective while making up Butler’s: im
peachment case. Reed reported every da;
to Hosmer, a claim agent here, who. had ii
service at one time lorty negro spies througl
this city. Hosmer drew chocks on which
Reed and his co-workers received pay. But
ler’s report fails to explain Hosmer’s con
nection with the investigation, and how it
happened. Hosmer was paymaster for his
detectives aud spies, but the explanation
will come from quarters least expected.
Reed reported to Meade, who referred him
to Major Smyth, who explained the examina
tion had, and the results reached. In the
meantime General Howard telegraphs to
Kansas for Major Whilly, a detective who
had figured prominently in the service of
the War Department with Baker.
These two worthies procured testimony in
the trial of Mrs. Surratt. Whitly has arrived,
and he hurried into the new field or labor
with the incentive of lorty thousand dollars.
THE EXPOSVCJHE.
How well he has sucoeded in the manu
facturing of witnesses, is shown by the -pub-
Jisied testimony. Its infamy will soon ap
pear from another quarter that the witnesses
were all subpoenaed, and a plan concocted
:n Washington for a political effect, will be
proven by Reed, who, becoming disgusted
with the foul proceedings, has renamed here
to expOBB the Whole ecnocae. ■
A private citizen ot high standing was
dispatched to Atlanta to ascertain if it were
possible this could be true. The report has
been submitted to the President, and if nec
essary Executive interference will be had to
protect innocence, as access to the Chief
Magistrate is not so difficult as on for
mer occasions, when Mrs. Surratt was under
sentence.
PARTISAN SCHEMES.
Two grand partisan schemes of the Radi
cals appeared upon the tapis ab the same
hour to-day. The announcement that the
Senate had concurred in the Hotuie amend
ment to the joint resolution excluding the
votes of the Southern States from the Elec
toral College, was followed by the -Freed-
raen’s Bureau Bill. It appears the Senate
is attempting to rival the House in the perpe
tration of legislative enormities. These meas
ures are a proclamation on the part of the
Ridicals of their intent to carry the Presi
dential election by iraud and violence.
Acts of violence to gentlewomen by ne
groes are chronicled so constantly in the
papers that heads oi families cannot he too
cautious hovy they suffer their lemale de
pendents to expose themselves unprotected.
We have met with several cases in the pa
pers to-day. The following is taken from
the Nashville Union and Dispatch, of Fri
day :
Yesterday morning, between eight and ten
O’clock, a terrible outrage was perpetrated
in Williamson county, about six miles be
yond Franklin, on the Carter’s Creek Turn
pike. Miss Ezeli, step-daughter of Mr.
Henry King, at that hour was returning
to her home from a visit to her brother-in-
law, where she had spent the night before.
When within some six hundred yards of her
home, she was met by a negro man who is
employed on the tarm of Thomas F. Per
kins, who seized her and violent y outraged
her person. He grasped her by the throat
and choked her till she was senseless. No
one was near, and her cries were suppressed
by the grasp of the fiend.
In addition to the above, it is stated that
this negro devil had observed her as she
passed along the road the night previous,
aud was laying in wait, like the “lion for bis
helpless prey; that he succeeded is too well
known. He left the youog lady in a state
el unconsciousness aud fled. A citizen,
coming along soon after, saw her, and after
her mind was restored, she recited the story
of her wrongs. A party of neighboring gen
tlemen immediately armed tbemselves-and
started on the track of the devil. They came"
up with his trail where he hud left the pike
sad turned off into a farm.

Horrible Outrage.—A widow lady living
some nine miles from this place, was the sub-,

Two negroas, nnknown to her, applied to
her far admission to her house ou the night

streets, women and children screaming,' mei,
running in all directions, and dogs howling
piteously. Two other slight tremors were
also felt. The third shock was the longest
and severest of all, lasting abont three sec
onds, and was a violent and undefinable
“ shake,’’ a sadden movement oUthe-earth
four or five inches to the northeast with a
kind of a jerk, a terrible inmbling noise, and
quiveriog farewell. 5 The fourth- was" violent
and noisy, and produced upon persons

The greatest anxiety was felt, amid the
consternation, for the safety of the S'X 1 or
seven hundred men “delving in the dingy

mines along the Comstock, And yet :but
few of them felt the shocks, and paid [but

of the mine, and they say their sensations
while ascending were < indescribable; some
times the incline itself seemed to be'rushing'
upward and sometimes descending. M4ny
of the mines piped all hands on deck, but
work was soon resumed as usual. In the
Cole tunnel, from which a large stream of
water has been pouring for months, the
volume was increased 16 cubic inches by the
earthquake, and has been steady nll day at

before the water was cold. ' “Not more than'

the “upper level” of the infernal regions.!

lathe moat remarkable and exciting story of tbe kind
that ever appeared, and is tbe FoumaiTehead from
which myriads of Indian Tales have been derived,
gome of the characters are unequalled in the whole
range of Fiction Tor a certain kind of weird, myste
rious interest that hangs around them. For instance,
thetenibleJibbenaiuD8ay, the “Spirit that walks,’'
Bloody Nathan, the “Man of Peace,” and- Roaring
Ralph Stackpole, the “BempinE Tiger of the Roiling
Fork,” who waa equally at home whether stealing
Red men’s scalps or a pale fcce’s horse. The desire
to reed a story of such intente Interest, of course,
will bs tunrersal. and we tsast that onr friends wi 1
