This beanttfol poem wse published In the Herald
several year* ago, bat It Is so exquisitely beautiful
that It will bear republishing. It was written by
Hiss Priest—all will recognize it coming from
• woman’s heart.. To those Vho have loat inti
mate friends—and who haB not f—some of the allu
sions are inexpressibly affecting. If read at evening
twilight,'many a moistened eye will follow the
lines: ’
Over the river they beckon to me,
Loved ones who have passed to the other side,
The gleam of their snowy robes I see,
Bnt their voices are loat in the dashing tide.
There’s one with ringlets of snnny gold.
And eves the resection of Heaven’s own blue,
He crosses the twilight gray and cold.
And the pale mist hid him from mortal view.
Wens tv not the angels who met him there.
The gates of The City we could not see;
Over the Biver, over the Biver,
My brother stands ready, to welcome "me.
Over the Biver the boatman pale,
earned another—the hoasehold pet;
Her bright carls waved in the geniie Rale-
Darling Minnie. I see her yeti *
She crossed on her bosom her dimpled hands
And fearlessly entered the phantom bark* *
We watched it glide from the silver sands,
And all onr sunshine grew 1 strangely dark.
We know she ia safe on the other-side,
Where all the ransomed and angels be:
Over the Btvcr, the Mytafic ftlv5\
My childhood’s idol* are waiting for me.
For none return from the qniet shores, •
Who crosB with the boatman cold and bine;
We hear the d>p of the golden oars,
We catch a gieam of the snowy sail.
And, O, they have passed from our heart—
They cross the stream and are gone for aye 1
We cannot sunder ..the veil apxrt,
That hides from our vision'the gates of day;
We only know that theirbirks no more
Shall sail with oura on life’s stormy sea,
Yet somehow I hope on the unseen shore,
They watch, and beckon, and wait for me.
And I sit and think when the sunset’s gold
Is flashing river, &Dd nlll, and shore,
I shall one day stand by the* water co;d.
And list to the round of the boatman’s oar;
I shall watch for the gleam of ; the flapping soil,
I shall hear the boat as it gains the Btrand.
I shall pass from sight with the Boatmsu pale
To the better shore of the Spirit Land 1
I shall know the loved who have gone before.
And joyfully sweet will the meeting be,
When over the Biver, the peaceful Biver,
The Angel of Death shall carry me 1 • ^

An Euit Tennessee Brakcraan.
Soon after the opening of the East Ten
nessee and Georgia Railroad, there chanced
to be travelling over the Jihe, in a car where
there were but few passengers, a gentleman
who was seated opposite the stove, wrapped
np in bis shawl ana meditations. Might came
on. Presently in bounded a brakeman,
loudly slamming the dcor behind him—one
of those connlry geniuses, who, With a loada
ble ambition, had a day or two agone aban
doned the girls, tbs fiddle and the plongh
tail, to “climb in the world,” and became a
brakeman. He had been the king, bee at all
the neighborhood frolics, at the house rais
ings, at the corn shuckings, and at the cross
roads groggery fighting ground, and now he
felt sure that be was a king bee on railroads.
Strutting up to-tbe stove, be slammed down
the lantero, kick the mud from his huge
boots, on the font-board of the seat, spit to.
bacco juice copiously and noiseily on the his
sing stove, crossed his muscular thighs, took
a survey of the aforesaid boots, with harness
leather straps, and then bethought himself
of the “customer” sitting opposite, on whom
be proceeded to bestow a lengthened and
saucy look, as though he doubted the “cus
tomer's” right to be in the coach at ail. At
length he sought knowledge :
“ Whar ar you guiue, Mister ?”
“To Dalton, sir,” responded the gentleman
quietly.
“Preacher, ain’t yon ?”
“Mo, sir, I am not ; bnt why do you
ask •?”
“Ob, nothing; only I thought I saw ‘Hark,
from the tombs’ sticking out all over yon,
like tbe measils. Yon know me, I reckon ?”
“I’m sorry to say that I do, not.”
“Well I’ll jist be dam! Why, where the
devil were you raised ?”
“At Maryville, East Tennessee.”
“Oh ! that excuses you, for if I ever hearn ;
tell ov that settlement afore I wish I may be
durned, and I knows every place, I dus.”
“Yon seem to be well acquainted with the
place yon are now occnpying,” remarked tbe
stranger, almost choking with efforts to sup
press his laughter.
“What place do you mean, Mister ? This
yere red baiuch covered with the dried skins
of cows’ toognes, or my office ?”
“I alluded to your office, and by tbe way
wbat is your position on this road ?”
“Brakeman, by tbe jumpin’ geminy!, I
tho’t everybody know'd that; brakeman over
the Yeast Tennessey and Georgy Railroad.”
“Unfortunately, I did not know it.”
“Well, you’d dam soon fonn’ the fac’ ont
if you’d cut up any shines round yere, hog
gin’ wimmen, or cosSin’, or tryin’ to steal
anybody’s carpet-bagj or talkin’ sassy to the
conductor, or sich. Why, I’d a chucked
you thru that winder like dartin’ clapboards
thru the cracks of a barn, for I mean to raxi
this yere train on high morril principles, I
dus. An’ yon didn’t know I was’ the brake-
man ov this yere railroad ?
“Indeed, sir, I did not.”
“Well, old Slide-easy, all I ljave got to say
is, that for a man ov your looks, you know
less than any man I ever saw. How do you
manage to make a livin’ anyhow ?”
“I receive a salary; I am President oi tills
road; Wallace is ray name; but I have not
the pleasure of knowing yours; will you lie
bind enough to inform me ?”
Ail symptoms of “king bee” disappeared
at this thunderbolt announcement, and in
their stead were seen timid humility, crushed
pride of place, a strong “get np and git” ex
pression, and a most, confounded hang-dog
“done up” and “dog-goned” appearance gen
erally. The brakeman slid.
