We bare already alluded to the reception and com
plimentary benefit tendered to Joseph W. 0110, the
so-called Representative from this District, by the col
ored people at Tbomisvllle, and from passengers who
arrived here by the Gulf Railroad yeaterday, era learn
that similar flattering receptions were extended to
him at otto r places which he visited on his election
eering tour- From the general tenor of these
demonstrations, we judge that the ex-hospital steward
has a slim chance to have his expenses by the
Government next year.
At Dixie, Station No. IT, A. AG. B. B, ha was tin-
panned by the colored people from the hotel to the
depot, and nude a quiet entrance Into the passenger
car. The oolored people told him to leave the place;
—they had enough of him and his party.
At Station No. is a huge crowd of colored people
assembled at the depot awaiting bis arrival, see
when the train stopped be was Invited ont to speak,
bnt he was so overcome by the warm reception which
be received at hie last stopping place that he declined
the honor*
Henry Qwlnn, of WadevUle, then addressed the
crowd, and afterwards snag a song ridiculing Clift
In particular and carpet-baggers generally. In his
speech GwiuB stated to the colored people who -»n0
what this man was; that all that these carpet-baggers
told them about Democrats wanting to redoes them
to slavery was a pack of Infamous lies, and that they
knew It.
Ws have advices from parties in different portions
of Southern Georgia, all of whom state that the
greatest change has come over the colored people,
who have found that the carpet-baggera and scalai
wage have deceive! them; and they farther state
that meet of the Leaguei have been broken op and
bee-spoken democratic clubs organized.
One Negro Stabs Another Three Times
and Hakes HU Kscape.
About dirk yesterday afternoon two young negroes
bad a quarrel which resulted in one of them, named
John Wilson, being badly stabbed In three different
places.
The facts In regard to the affair were difficult to
collect, bnt so far aa gathered go to Show that the af
fair occurred to the neighborhood of South and West
Broad streets, and that the man stabbed was to no
wise the aggressor: that when his assailant, whose
name could not be ascertained, was seeking to pro
voke the figbV he several times asked him to desist,
stating that he did not wish to quarrel, bnt wanted to
be let alone. Notwithstanding bis entceatiea the
committor of the deed got Wilson into a scuffle, and
then stabbed him, and ran off.
Soon after receiving the wound* Wilson wes con
ducted to the drag store of Dr. Walsh, corner of Ber
nard and Broughton streets, whore his wounds were
dressed. One wound was just to the corner of the
right eye; the knife then entered, passed Into the
nostrils and penetrated deeper. Another was about
the middle of the forehead. Bat the worst wound
wee inflicted on top end near the centre of the head.
The blow was given with so much strength that the
knife drove through the scalp into the shall, making
a horrible gash about five inches to length.
From all of the woande the blood flowed copiously
and weakened the victim of this unprovoked assault
considerably. Hia lpjaries, though of a dangerous
character, will not. It la thought, result fatally. The
most danger is apprehended from the injury on top
of the head. It la hardly probabl# that the eye .will
be saved.
As stated, Wilson's opponent ran off immediately
after commuting the bloody assault. The police
were put upon his track, bat up to n late hour laat
night he had not been arrested.

A poet once said:
“Into each heart some rain moat fall.”
'And, judging from the frequent showers of yester
day and too two days previous, the time lor the ac
complishment of the poet’s assertion has come, for
everybody is "soaked through and through," and If
every one’s heart has not water In It, it la no fault of
therein.
How delightful is the sound aa It tolls Uqold-llke, to
melting cadence from the great ocean of the sky
down to this great mass of earth. How soft, like
with Velvet loot, is tho pattering of the dropias they
light and spread upon tue roots and run so merrily
to the eaves and swiftly down the spout to All—no due
knows just where or bow—its destined purpose.
With what a laughing, jolly-like ring does the com
panionship of drops go babbling and dancing over
the sidewalk to the street, and swell the tide to the all
consuming dr well, we like to hare said drain—

Bold Attempt at Highway Bobbery.—
Two or three nights since two gentlemen drove in a
baggy to Bethesds, and returned to the city about
eleven o'clock. When about half-way back, they re
ceived a jolt, and the hor£e commenced to step high,
as if he had ltruck against something which had
hmed trim. An examination, of course, made in the
dirk, showed that nothing was broken, and they con-
Uaued tteir journey. Arriving in the city, they
nude a closer examination with A light, and found a
rope aiound the rear axle. The position of the rope
showed that it had been suddenly snapped, and being
caught by ihe wheels, became partially coiled around
the axle. It is evident that eome mUcreants stretch
ed the rope across the rood, hoping that it would stop
parties attempting to pass, and then they could rob
them at leisure. Fortunately for- the gentlemen,
they were driving rapidly* and thus managed uncon
sciously to soap the rope. Try this rope stretching
icruaa the road again, highwaymen; yon can't con
ceive how handy it will he for stretching your necks
when some irate individuals find their horses necks
broken and the buggy smashed.
