'raphic description of tbet peculiar type of
’he genus homo written to our hand by one of
he best of the stock, Dana, editor of the
Jew York Sun, who, commenting on the
ibove advertisement; says:
“Among mean men. the very meanest is a
Wan Yankee. We are sorry to be obliged
to add Thai the meanest .Yankees are pro
duced in Connecticut., There are Yankees
ithere to whom wooden nutmegs and grind
ing sheep's hoses are not a circumstance
^Yankees whoso meanness leaves these tra-
g itional achievements ali-ont of sight. The
electmen of the town of Ledyard are, we
Tear, of 'this nnfortnnate class.
; “Ledyard ’is a town with a histone name.
'Some of the Selectmen, we dare say, are of
i historic Puritan families. John Brewster is
'a name that sounds as if it might have be
longed to a passenger in the Mayflower.
Very likely there are paupers among those
now to be sold to the lowest bidder who
come of the same noble and heroic ancestry
They are consins, perhaps, of the prosper
ous and wealthy citizens of the town. Their
names may be inscribed on the famous
monument in the neighboring town of Gro
ton.- Nevertheless, they are put up at auc
lion like so many beasts, and will be knock
ed off to the party who offers to keep them
at the meanest rate.
“In 1 darker times there were other towns
in Connecticut which treated their poor in
the same revolting manner. But now we
trust there. are few of them that still keep
„..k- K—homno nractice. Indeed, we hope
dence ot the fiict in order that we may put
them in the pillory. The 'disgrace may
shame their mean inhabitants into more hu
mane"and Christian behaviour.”
While we sympathize with the editor in his
humane and charitable hope for the speedy
banishment of the barbarous New England
practice which he describes, with our pres-
;'eht impressions of New Eogland philan
thropy, benevolence and charily, we would
mnch prefer to be a Georgia negro, in the
condition in which he was before the Freed

~AS the time approaches for the selection of

anxiously turned to the great question,'“Who
shall that man be ?”
Allow me, sir, to suggest the name of the
Hon. A. H. Hansel!, of the county of

to fill that responsible position. Age, expe

justice and moderation, as the prominent
characteristics of his mind, all conspire to
pornt him out as pre-eminently the man for'

An Awful Catastrophe—Five Men Killed
and Twenty or More Wounded.
[From the Hacon Telegraph.]
We briefly mentioned, in Sunday’s paper,
the washing away of the bridge in course of
construction across the Chattahoochee river
at Fort Gaines on Saturday last. We have
the fall particulars of the awinl affair by last
evening’s trains on the Southwestern Road.
The bridge was being built by a slock com
pany known as the Fort Gaines Bridge Com
pany, in which the Somhwesterh Railroad
Company was the principal stockholder. An
extra oi the Chattahoochee Mirror of the 5th
instant says: - ;
“This morning abont 8 o’clock,'the new
bridge being bnilt across the Chattahoochee
river, in consequence of the rising waters,
which drifted rafts of timber sgainst the
temporary structures, washed them away,
and the whole came down with a tremen
dous crash and fatal results, taking nearly
the entire second span, which -reached the
brick pier, a distance from' the wooden one
abont three hundred feet. Thp cries and
groans of the sufferers, like a panic shock,
was soon commnnicated to the inhabitants,
and onr city was in general commotion,
rushing to the river to save the perisbipg
ones. Skiffs and flatboats were procured,
and the dead and the wonnded were landed
along the banks of the river of the fallen
bridge, as thev drifted down the stream.
About thirty hands were employed on the
bridge—many were working underneath—
and a large number, p£ spectators were also
on the bridge, at. the time it fell. All went
down together, from an'altitude of abont 80

TUB SAVANNAH MUNICIPAL BILL—THE DEUOC-
BACV AGAIN TRIUMPHANT.
By the successful macosuvreing of the De
mocracy, Bullock has again been defeated in
the house of bis friends. According to the
provisions of the Code, registration closed
in Savannah to-dav. and as no registration
has taken place in accordance with the Code,
no election can now be held until next year,
so that Mayor Anderson and the present
municipal oncers will remain in office until
October, 1869. This being the condition or
affairs, when the Executive vetp of the ba-
vannah bill came up, the Democrats changed
sides With the Radicals, and vice versa. The
Radicals voted against the veto, and the
Democrats, on the other hand, voted gener
ally in favor of sustaining it. Campbell, the

Senator Winn, of tBe 35th District, intro
duced a bill declaring that negroes and all
persons of color are ineligible to any office
ip this State, and also a resolution that
Campbell, negro Senator from the 2d Dis
Irict; and Wallace, negrp Senator from the
20tb District, beigg negroes, are therefore
not eligible to seals in the Senate, either un
der the Constitution of Georgia or the Con

Higbee, of the 25th District, here rose to
make a point of order on the ground that
the Senate had once apted on this matter,
and, therefore, coaid not do so sgain.
Wooten, of the 11th District, interrupted
Higbee, saying that-he (Higbee) was crazy
on the negro question^ Higbee called for the
reading ot General Order Ninety, which, to
his mind, was conclusive that this question
bad been finally disposed of.
Mr. Winn remarked that when he (Higbee)
dies, bp will want General Order. Ninety en
graved on bis coffin lid.
Higbee, bowever, insisted on reading the
resolution passed heretofore under General
Order No. 90, and that 4 took a twp-thirds

point of Higbee well taken, and raled that
it did take two-thirds to bring np the ques
tion again.
Mr. Holcombe, of the 30th, considered
the decision ot the Chair an extraordinary
deception, and therefore.appealed from the
decision.
Tne appeal from the decision of the Chair
was sustained by a vote of 24 to 8, and the
resolution to Mr. Winn was made the special
order for next Friday.
It is considered a. certainty that the two
