To provide for uk'Rg the Cenfus
oi this State, as rtquired by the
Conff rution.
BE it enabled by the Senate and
Houfe of Kept e/entatives in Ge
neral AJfcmbly met, and by the autho
rity of the fame, That it ihali be the
dory of the j dikes of the Inferior
Court, or any three of them in each
county refpedbvely, within fixty
days after the adjournment of this
Legiflature, to appoint one or more
perfons in each county, that is to
iky, one perfon in each Battalion
that may be in the refpedtive coun
ties, whole duty it fhail be to take
a full and accurate Cenfus or enu
meration of all free white perfons
arid people of color refining there
in, diibnguilihing in feparate co
lumns, the (ire white ptrfoas from
the perfons of color and return the
fame to the clerks of the Superior
Courts of the feveral counties, cer
tified under their handy, on or be

I failed on the 16'h uit. from
New- Bedford, in the fbop Thetis,
of that place, bound to Savannah,
having on board, including both
crew and paff ngers 34 fouls. On
th 23d we experienced a violent
gale of wind from N. E. which
brought us ro under tn -fa 1, after
having feud fix hours. At about 7
o’clock P. M. we were fl ack, as
was fuppefed by a whice fquali from
N. N. W. which inftamly upf-t

into the Cabin, where 22 of the paf
fengers perifhed, or were wafted
from the deck as they endeavoured
