Extract o' a Letter.
The Cnnl Mines ut Mauch Chunk and the
country for miles around, all inouunmiou.-,
belong to the Leliigli Coal and Navigation
Companv, who have expended immense sums
upon the works eonneeted with them. From
the Lehigh river to the summit of the coal
•mountain, is near 9 miles, over which space a
rail road has keen laid for the transpoilation
of coal. The mountain is oblong, its extreme
hei>t|it being about 1000 feet, and the rise of
the road on an average, one foot m 7(1. A
road is first cut along the side of the mountain,
on which billets of wood are laid transversely,
(like our swamp causeways) and on thein< par
allel with the road, the rads of pine <i by 1 in
ches thick arc placed. On the. upper surface
and inner edge of these rails, narrow bars or
plates of iron are screwed for the wheels to
run on.—The cost, $4,500 per mile. Tin-
cars for carrying the coal are made of sheet
iron, with strong wheels about two feet m di
ameter, and cariy a ton each. 1'hey weigh
when empty, near 15O0lbs. and three of them
are drawn up with ease by one mule; hot in
descending, from 10 to 14 fully loaded, are
linked together, passing over the road with
great rapidity by their own gravity, with a
uoise that may l,e heard for miles. The speed
is regulated try a lever to cacti car, which
stands up between the wheels of one side, and
by using it a pressure i • applied to them which
lessens or prevents their revolution at pleasure.
One man guides the whole lino with a rope
tied to the ends of the levers of the first six
cars. Ire sitting on the seventh. Immediately
after the coal ears, the males to drag them up
.after being ertiplied.are sent down in cars.three
in each, and it is ludicrous to seethe poor ani
mals riding by at the rate of 15 in les an hour,

exclaimed Sir Joseph Ranks, (autoritate P.

Sir Joseph never saw Rand’s Solar Micro

the occasion. A lobster is a mere pigmy
compared with the colossal flea. All tli t the
latter wants is a nose, and he would present it
head equal to a lofty innn. We examined one

Yesterday morning, we should Imve only

a fly apparently juvenile, the “ rrnnson tide”
coursing through bis frame, and his heart heat

evidently suffering from love yr disappointed
ambition ; and to judge from the passionate
expression of his face, he was a fly of high-
wrought feelings, dissatisfied with the order of
things, and, like Hamlet, determined upon
questioning destiny.—JV*. Y. Courier.
Fortunate Recape.—By the arrival of the

The Thomas Gelston, Capt. Martin, was

in the Sierra Leon river, in the month of June
last; and Capt. Martin seeing the river crowd

bathe. To facilitate the operation of loading,
the ship had a stage rigged from her alt port
nearly level with the water’s edge. Disregard
ing the caution of the Captain, one of the crew
named William Davs, rc-olved to bathe in the
river, and he took with him a boy for the same
purpose, with whom he was swimming on his
back, when his loot was seized by a shark, the
boy was flung from the hack oftho sailor, and
succeeded in gaining the stage; but the sailor
himself was instantly pulled under water. In
a moment however, the unfortunate man arose

I know I must die t»r On Tuesday night thereafter -he.
not getting any belter, desired to have some person to
pray for Iter, there being no one present, pom I'lizit was
left without any person to say any thing to her upon
what she seemed to be sensibl * was her destiny, that
was, of being soon separated from her mother, who whs
thou weeping over her bed, and her broth* rs and t»i j -

i«n cheeks the tears of sorrow were gently flowing
from their weeping eyes. But, ah ! — the worst had not
yet come; it had not vet entered their minds, that !’li-
Z£ was do r.earlv bmugltf to her latter days, and that
would so soon bid them a long farewell. Some
time after night, when aff was still but poor F.bzn, who
was struggling, as it wore, with the cold arms of death,
and whose countenance was fixed Heai'cnw.ard; and
whose voice was now and then to he heard in sweet
accents to ascend to God in humble praver to have
mercy, mercy upon her poor soul, she exclaimed — 44 O !
mama, what will I do if I die and the of./ buy gets me!”
But before tie* affectionate mother had time to make any
reply to F.lizn, who appeared to have a lovely smile up
on hercountenance, and who seemed to heplnrinr her,

oxclairrvd in a t- nc #xpre8«ive of joy and triumph,—
44 No, don” von «ce him?—Of” she says, “look at the
pretty little angels standing all around my bed.” -
Hence, we have every reason to believe that F.liza ex
perienced a change of henrt, and, tha* this was the
time when the Lord put a new song into her mouth,
even praise unto God,.from the clear views fihe had of.
fhc fla *ie of salvation, and from her resignation andf^p
