Gas Lights from (Voter.—A highly interes
ting discovery is about to come before the pub

sor Donovan, and Mr. I.uwo, of Brick lane

much talked of, and the question generally
asked is, how is ihe Gas made ? At present
no satisfactory information respecting the pro
cess can be given ; but wo understand tho
hydrogen gas obtained by the decomposition
of water is charged with an illuminating prin
ciple, bv passing through some liquid procur
ed during the distillation of pit-coal, in the
ordm iry process of gas making. Tho requi
site apparatus is much more simple than that

great respectability and extensive practice,
gives in the Medical Journal for July, ihe
following interesting statement. A gentleman
who aiiends my lectures (Mr Myers ofNew-
ington-eause-way.) frequently applied sul
phuric acid to his tooth with some relief; but
on one uceasion, lie, in a moment ot confu
sion, took down the next bottle to bis remedy,
which contained nitric acid. To his great
surprise, ho experienced immediate relief.

try it, while laboring under the most intense

Riots at Providence.—Tho Providence
Journal of Thursday, slated that, in an affray
the evening before, in Olney’s lane, between
3 and 9 o'clock, a saiior was shot dead, and
four others wounded. Tho deceased sailor
was a Swede by birth, nnd was one of the
crew of ship New Jersey, from Cnntnn.—
Among the crowd that assembled alter the oc
currence, it was difficult to obtain Ihe particu
lars which led to this melancholy terniinntion.
The shots were fired from a house occupied

savs the town was again thrown into a slate of

Oluev’s Inne, to the number of seven or eight
hundred, who commenced pulling down the
houses occupied by blacks, and ut 12 o’clock,
had succeeded in destroying eight buildings.
The First Light Infantry Company worn un
der arms during a part of the night, by order
of Governor Arnold, who, with High Sheriff
Mumford and his Dop Hies, assisted bv the
members of tho Town Council, succeeded in
arresting a number of ihe ringleaders. At 2
