What a Fire-Eater thinks,
Of tbe Convention of his own party,
held at Milledgeville on the 31st ult.—
We qtiolc from the Columbus Sentinel,
a Southern Rights paper:
To tije Editor of the Sentinel :
l am astoni-bed and ashamed at the
proceedings of what has been called the
“ Democratic Convention,” held at Mil
ledgeville on the 31st ult. This is no _
Democratic procedure, but a meager af- j Charles Cook, Ckattoogaville 2.00
fair gotten up and carried out by a few Wm. Coffins, Adairsville, 1.00
old wire-pullers and office-seekers of the j McCarty, Alatoona, 2 00
party, j lined on to “ a few more of tbe
same sort” of the Constitutional Union
party.
Only about twenty persons in thi.-
county attended the call to appoint del
egates. Does tbe Democratic party of
Muscogee consist only of twenty—or
‘are twenty plotting politicians to be al
lowed to control the whole Democracy
of the county of Muscogee ? I protest
against the appointment of men to such
important offices by such a small uumber
of self-cons;ituted representatives. I
protest against their power to nominate
candidates for Electors of President and
Vice President, until we know whom it
is we are coiled upon to support. Sup
pose the contemplated Baltimore Con-
vention should nominate Senator Hale,
or any other Free-soiicr, for tbe Presi
dency or Vice Presidency, are we to be
bound to support such a nominee 1 And
yet this “ Rump” Convention of Mil
ledgeville has chosen its Electors befoK
hand to vote “ nolens volens” for the
nominees of a Convention at Baltimore,
yet to be held.
I think tho resolutions of thf late Mil
ledgeville Convention taine and submis
sive—far. fur below tha Georgia platform
adopted by the submission Convention,
lately held in tbe same place; and I ad
vise tho Southern Rights party to make
n separate organization. Let us call a
convention of our own, and invite dele
gates of the Southern Rights party from
all the counties, to meet in Milledgeville
ofier tho Baltimore and Philadelphia
Conventions have assembled and acted.
If either of these have made selections to
suit us, very well—we will accept them ;
if not, we. will start candidates of our
own. Doubt not—we shall be “ in at
the death ;” and if we don’t carry off the
“bush,” wo shall at least brush away
worst cnemios of Democracy and
Southern Rights

A year or two ago, says the Charleston
Standard, very few books were published
in Charleston but now our enterpris
ing publishers, Walker & James, send
out new volumes from their press, with
remarkable despatch, and in a style e-
qual to that of the puldi-hers at the
North. We have now before us a second
and enlarged edition frem that pres-, of
Dr Mackey’s Lexicon of Freemasonry,
which contains a definition of all its com
municable terms ; notices of its history,
traditions and antiquities, and an ao*
count of all the fi es and mysteries ‘ of
the ancient world. The^fcct, that a sec
ond edition of this work has been so soon
called for, proves its value to the Order.
We have also, from the same publish
ing house, a small work on Building and
Loan Associations, containing their his
tory, principles, and plan of operation ;
together with a sta'ement of the benefits
attending them, and of the distinction be
tween American ami English Societies ;
also, a mode by which Life In-urance
may be adapted to the requirements of
their members ; a form of Constitution,
Ac.
In addition to the works above enum
erated, we have seen “ The Golden
Christmas” by W. G Simms, the be
ginning of a series of Southern Books,
published by Messrs. Walker, Richards,
& Co., printed at the office of Messrs.
Walker & James; also the “works of
John C. Calhoun, Vol I,” all beauti
fully gotten up. We hope this estab
lishment may meet with that success it
so eminently deserves. Any of the a-
bove named works may be bad at the

Formation of a New Republic.—
Advice from the Society Islands (receiv
ed via California and Honolulu) an
nounces that the natives of Raiatca have
changed their form of Government to re
publican. It has hitherto been under
the rule of Queen Putnare, and she bad
appointed one of her sons to be Yiee-
Regent or Governor of Raiatea. Before
the arrival of Pomare's son, the natives
of that island, held a council aud.elected
a ruler for a term of two years, and de
clared the several islands in confederacy
to constitute a •’Republica.” The Chief
Magistrate elected is a half white, and
represented as a very capable man. The
“Republican” party, as a very strong.
And little doubt exists but that the change
of Government will he permanent, as the
french officials at Tahitrare indifferent In
the matter, and Queen Pomare’s power
hr too weak to compel the islanders to re-
'-turn Jto her rule; and intelligent foreign
ers ley that it is quite likely that the

Colours the Hair and not the Skin.
The dye may be applied to the hair over

the least possible trouble keep his hajr, any
dark shade or perfect black-; with a positive

will not colour it. By an occasional applies

Consumption!
E VERYBODY knows is a flattering dis
ease. It commences and progresses io
ir.siduously. that before one is aware of it,
the lungs are a mass of ulcers, then a sudden
exposure or change from heat to cold, pro
duces an inflammation, and in a few days or
wcei s, it is said he or she died of h?sty ’Con
sumption. For all troubled with cough or
lung complaint, we would refer to the adver-'
tisement on the outside cf this paper of Jud-
son’s Chemical Extract of “Cherry and
Lungwort,’’ which is said to he a certain cure
fur this awful disease.
