Riilwiyi a the Uiitod Mitn. From a table prepared for Hunt’s Mer chant's Magazine, by David M. Balfour, of -Madsaehhsette, it appears that on the 1st of 'January, 1852, the number of Railroads in 'eneb State, and their length, were as follows: Railroads. Miles. Maine, 9 283 New-Hampebin, - 15 463 Vermont, 6 •869 Massachneetta, •87 1,-153 Rhode blend, T - 60 Connecticut, H ■670 New-York, 32 '1,946 New-Jersey, 10 290 Pennsylvania, 42 4^6 ’Delaware, 1 16 Maryland, 3 366 Virginia, 14 648 North-Carolina, 2 249 South-Carolina, C 383 Georgia, 11 804 Florida, 1 -fe 54 - Alabama, 2 135 Mississippi, 3 100 Louisiana, 6 117 Tennessee, 2 134 Kentucky, 2 93 ’Ohio, 13 890 'Michigrfb, 4 474 ’Indiana, 11 538 Illinois, 7 271 Wisconsin, 1 20 Total, 253 11,031 Perceiving thftt there are obstacles to the harmony of the democratic party growing in some degree out of alleged differences of <* pinion respecting the - political' vipws which have been maibtajned by Hie 'Washington- Union under the editorship of the undersign* 'ed, he feels 1 It'his duty to do what hie can, eins&itatly and properly, to remove them. He has therefore, determined to transfer his entire interest in the establishment to his partner, General Armstrong, and to .retire frefcrtfoe 'editorial nhair to his private pur suits in Tennessee. Massachusetts had the first road, but it was only three miles long. Pennsylvania and Maryland followed, and South Carolina was fourth, and in 1833 she had the longest road of any of the States. But Pennsylvania had then eleven roads, in all 212 miles long. South-Carolina had but one road 241 miles in length, up to 1st January, 1850, whilst New-York hod 27, Massachusetts 33, and Pennsylvavia 36. Georgia up to 1837 had only one road, seven miles long, and now she is the fifth State in the Union in respect of her railroads. ' Connecticut had>'no rail road in 1888, and now she has eleven. Two of the Pennsylvania roads are State works. One of them, the Philadelphia and Columbia road, 82 miles long, transported during the year 1851, 1,187,842 of eeal. ; ’ J SPECIAL The fesamination of the Cedar Town Fe- male School, Will trice’palace onthe 8th, 8th tad10th of June: AdVEftTISEMNENTS.
