The flare and the Lion. The following fable, the moral of-which has probably a political cast—being to the effect that even os the hare conquered the lion, so does the Bengalee overcome the Eng lishman—was published a few months since in the >• Semochar Durpun” a - Bengalee newspaper A han'sat jn th^ jungle with his wife, and to suii-^Hyjysj# omvk >'u'g7 tthrtlou, come iato the wood, and he will devour our chil dren.” •• No,” said the little bare,« for I will go to confront him, und conquer the great lion, the king of the beasts.” Then her husband laughed, and said—«« intellect is power. We can die but once: let us see what you can do.” Then the ' little hare, taking her little son in her jaws, jumped and Jumped till she came to the. lion. Then she put down her .son before his face, and put .her two paws together in humility, aipl said —«« Lot king-ot kings, 1 have brought you a nuizurana : oblige me by eating it. Also, I have some news to give.” Then the lion looked at the har's baby, and saw it was soft and juicy, and was pleased in his soul, and laughed, and his laugh was as the roar of the thunder of ludro. Then he asked her news, and the little hare replied—•< You arc the sovereign of the forest, but another comes, who calls himself king of the beasts, and demands tribute.” Tlten the roar of the lion ebook the forest, and the little hare almost died with fear as he asked—.. Where is the scoundrel: Can you show him to me ?’ Then the little hare liiaped along with the lkm till she came to an old well. The well was nearly full but had no wall. And she said h Look, he is hiding there in fear.” Then the lion, craning his neck, looked and saw his own shadow, and with a fearful roar leaped into the well. So the little hare, with a glad heart, took up her son, and went to her husband and said—.. Lo! intellect is power: I have killed the lion, the king of beasts.” that if they found no money they would be suspicious, and search more earnestly. The consequence was he lost .all his own money. When affairs became more tranquil, and ha could again enter into business, he took some of the prince’s money and transacted busi ness with it, as he formerly used to do with h : s own, thinking it a pity ’it should lie quite useless. , The prince of Caseel had heard of the French cruelty in plundering poor Joseph Rothschild, and concluded aU hi* money ard jewels were gone. When-hie went to Frankfort he called upon him, and said— .-. WellrJoscpb, all. lily money has been taken by the French.” «< Not a farthing,” said the honest man. i. l kave it all. 1 have used a little in but ainees. I will .return it all to you with in terest on What I have-used.” « No,” said the prince, <• keep it. 1 will not take the interest, and 1 will not take my, money from you for twenty years. Make use of it for that time, and I will only- take 2 per cent, interest for it.” The prinee told the story to all his friends. Joseph was in consequence employed by most of the German princes. He made am im mense fortune,-> his sons became barons of the German Empire, and one of them settled in England. A Rrasoa for .\eisy Prayin'. A worthy physician of Baltimcre, a mem ber of the Society of Friends, has 4 favorite negro coachman, who is as bright abd shine ing a light in the church as is possible for such a piece of ebony to be. You know 1 presume how the blacks conduct their devo tions. Well, Sam was in the habit of selec ting hie master's kitchen as the scene of the devorions which he led; and these religious services were not conducted entirely on a plan which a Quaker would altogether ap prove. The doctor, however, is famous for his good nature, and he endured the boister ous piety of his servant and his friends with wonderful equanimity. One night, howev er when they had been unusually « power ful in prayer,” the doctor thought proper to sdmiuister a gentle reproof. The Secret.—• I noticed,’ said Franklin, < a mechanic, suKfag a number of others at work on a house, erected but a little way from my office, who always appeared to be in a merry humor, who had a kind .word and cheerful smile for every one he met. Let the day bo ever so cold, gloomy or sunless, a happy smile danced, like a sunbeam, oh his cheerful countenance. No secret, Doctor,’ he replied ; < 1 h ve got one'of the best of Wives, and when I go to work, site always has a kind of eneourge- ment for me; and when l go home, she meets me with a smile and a kiss—and then, tea is sure to be ready, and she has done so many litt le things through the day to please me, that I cannot find it in my heart to speak an unkind word to anybody. What an influence then, hath woman over the heart >f man, to soften it, and make it the fountain of cheerful and pure. emotions.
