IN 1847, on the breaking out of the war with Mexi co, he immediately VOLUNTEERED AS A COMMON SOLDIER, and drilled in the ranks as such. In the same year he was . APPOINTED BRIGADIER GENERAL, by President Polk. In the same year he fought at the battles of CONTRERAS, CHURUBUSCO, MOLINO DEL REY, AND GAiUTA DE BELEN, receiving the plaudits of Generals Scott, Worth and Pillow, as well os of all the brother officer* and soldiers, for his oonduct and bravery; and on the capture of the city of Mexico, and the virtual CLOSE or THE WAR, RESIGNED HIS COMMISSION, and returned to his home and the practice of hi* profession, in which he has con- thned, loved, honored, and tad by all who knew him, until 1852, when he was unanimously nominated by the Natmnal Democratic Convention, nt Baltimore, for PRESIDENT op mg UNITED STATES!
