Sept. 21-tf S. M. AYERS.
TBIP TO ATHENS.
Last week ift company with our
friend, Sheriff McCarter, we. made a
short visit to the city of Athens. Be¬
ing deprived of railroad facilities as
we are m Franklin we went through
the country. Well, w6 had a very nice
time ia traveling both going and
coming, and the only objection in the
world we could find to traveling with
John McCarter was, that W6 had to
stop and get out to look at every iox
track between here and Athens, and
they were numerous. John’s a
though anyway you take him.
B u si ne@s in Athens was better thaD
4
we ever saw it. Why should it not.
'be? For Athens to-day is the best
tnarket in the stato of Georgia. With
the low rates of freight which she has
she is able to sell goods as cheap, if
not cheaper, by either wholesale or
retail, than any other city in the State.
Atlanta not excepted. In a short time
Athens will sweep the wholesale trade
of this whole up coant,ry, and we are
glad to see-that she Is sharing a libers
al portion of it already. And another
thing, there isn’t a city in, the State
that has a more genteel, liberal set
merchants than Athens. The short
’time in which we had to spend there
we did not have the pleasure of calling
to see near so many of the merchants
as we wbfhed tp. Among tboeie we
called to see is that old roliable bards
Wraro house of
CHILDS, NICKERSON & CO.
This house is so well known in
Franklin and adjoining counties that
it is almost useless for us to say more
than they are still ia Athens and do¬
ing as they have been doing, with the
^exception of haviog a much larger
stock than ever before known to sell
in Athens. They keep every thing ia
the world pertaining to the Hard'
ware business, that is, if they havn't
got anything you want they will or¬
der it for you, so you can get any-^
thing in the Hardware line from
Childs, Nickerson & Co.' Our friend,
Mem Little, has resigned as
of this county, and is now surveying
Childs, Nickerson & Co’s Hardware
Mouse where be can be found at all
times. See thoir advertisement.
Among the many reliable Dry
Good Houses in Athens stands prom¬
inently the firm of
BOtOMON & JOSEPH.
From their advertisement in this
issue it will be seen that they inform
the merchants of Northeast Georgia
that they have the largest and most
select stock of Dry Goods, Clothing,
Boots, Shoes, &c., ever shown
in Athens. We have heard the pri¬
on their goods and are prepared
to say that they are as cheap as any
we know of in the State.
Who is it in FrankliD, off adjoining
counties that hasn’t heard of the
great Regulators of the Dry Goods
market:
JAMES M. GRAY & CO.
At Gray’s Grand Fall Opening is
to be found a large and well selected
stock of Fashionable Dress Goods,
Mourning Goods, Black Silks, No¬
tions, Hosiery, Gloves, Jeans, Cassi
yneres, Boots, Shoes, Hats, &e, which
have been purchased by paying cash
for them, and by selling them the
same way it is not surprisingly
strange that they can Sell goods at>
cheap as any other house in North¬
east Georgia. If you want a bargain
Call at Gray’s. See advertisement.

—Wo call special attention to the

—Wm. Chastain, of this county,
died one day during last week. So far
as we aro aware he was a hard
working, sober, honest, rolia
ble gentleman. Ho was a cripple, and
in passing tho road we have soon him
a number of times working in the
farm when be would go from one stalk
of cotton to another on his crutches
In speaking of tho “Times” Cook
Stove sold by A. K. Childs & Co., the
Athens Banner has this to say :
It is symmetrical in proportion, ar¬
tistic in adornment, and beautiful to
look upon. Upon this stove 11 £
pounds of bread have been thoroughly
baked in 41 minutes with only five
pounds of wood, It bioils and roasts
with equal satisfaction and is a gen¬
eral favorite everywhere. Truth is W.
H. Jones, tho general superintendent
of the Northeast Stove Depot, is the
most popular man among the ladies
in all the country, and why ? Because
he introduced the “Times” Cook
Stove in this section. Hundreds of
them on hand for the tall trade. Go
and see them.
