CARNESVILT/K. ga., OCTOBER 12,
For Congress, 9th District
HON. JOEL A.
OF MORGAN.
Persons wishing to attend the
North Georgia Fair, in Atlanta, which
commences on the 21st of this month
and continues until the 26tb, can pass
over the Air-Line Railroad from
Toccoa to Atlanta and return for the
reduced rates of $3.70.
We understand that Speer said in
a speech at Gainesville that he gave
the Clerk of the Court in Gwinnett
county a receipt for the $350. which
the Grand Jury found ?ault with him
for, but we understand Mr. Yaughan
who was Clerk at tbe time says Speer
did not do any such a thing. Some¬
body’s—mistaken.
Emory Speer is getting things mix¬
ed up in Gwinnett county, Mr.
Yaugban, who was Clerk of the Court
at the time Speer took the $350,
which the last Grand Jury in that
county took occasion to look into, says
that Speer never did receipt him for
the $350., nor did he ever see one
cent of the money. How does this
sound in the earn of Mr. SpeerV fol¬
lowers ?
We have reoeived several letters
during the past week from the moun¬
tain counties in this District and find
everything more encouraging for Bil¬
lups than we expected. One of our
correspondents says “Billups will
carry all the mountain counties with
the exception of Pickens, where the
Radicals are as solid for Speer as they
were for Grant.” We now give Bil¬
lups 3000 majority.
’ This Settles it.

/"^llriJEditor ^Ttilfre is being a good
deal said in some parts of this county
about the contents of a letter purpor¬
ting to be from a Mr. Harmon Mar-"
tin, of Morgan county, who claims to
be Tax Collector of that county. The
letter is claimed to be in the hands of
a Mr. Martin in this county who is
said to be a brother of the man Mar¬
tin claiming to be Tal Coltetor of M.or
gan county. The whole thing is false
and gotten up to injure Col. Billups
The letters allege that Col. Billups
is not good for his contracts ; that he
is considered slow to pay at borne;
the truthfulness of which I leave to
the following certificate signed by 44
of the business men of Madison , Mor¬
gan county.
And I want it understood that the
Tax Collector of Morgan county is
named James N. Streddard, and not
Martin. Citizen.

ance of danger.
TO What Means They Resort,
It is surprisingly strange .flr I the
means which some persons wlr' ^lop
to in order to cripple a good ar* ffmre
man whom they differ with political''
ly. Stranger than all the things which
we have heard during this campaign
are the reports which have been cirs
cnlated on Col. Billups in this county
during the past few weeks. There
have actually letters been sent to this
county within the past few weeks
stating that Col, Billups would no^
pay what he owed, that he would e
vade paying a just debt, that he had
taken advantage of the Bankrupt act,
that he would not give in his proper¬
ty to the Tax Receiver at its real vals
ue, and several other things which
are not worthy to be mentioned. We
are prepared, and authorized, to de¬
nounce these statements, and all such
of like character, as as malicious false¬
hoods as ever fell from the Kps of any
ungentlemanly man, and that they
have been hatched out by some who
has not the slightest regard for the
truth in order to injure Col. Billups
where he is not personally known.
Col. Billups has never taken advao*
tage of the Bankrupt act, and since
these reports have been circulated
there has been a certificate sent to
this county, which is now in the
hands of Dr. McEntire, signed by for¬
ty of the business men of Madison
stating that they have had dealings
with Col. Billups and found bim
prompt and reliable in all bis deal¬
ings. This certificate is also signed
by the Ordinary and Tax Collector of
Morgan county- We do not suppose
there is a more prompt man in his
dealings in the District than Col. Bil»
lups, and if his very ungenerous po»
laical enemies wished these unquali**
fied lies to have injured him 'twould
have been better for them to held
back for a few weeks at least.
Since writing the above article the
certificate which we made mention of
has been sent to this office by one of
isssue. our citizens, We Which trust this we publish will be in suffi¬ this
cient to put a stop to the detestable
falsehoods which have been taking
rounds so freely for the last few
weeks in this and adjoining counties.
Also, a card from Col. Billups which
will speak .for itself.
A CARD FROM COL. BILLUPS.
Morganton, Ga., Oct. 2d, '78
Editor Franklin Register :
Dear Sir:—I am informed that
some persons in Franklin county are
circulating a letter or other writing)
in which it is charged that I have
taken the benefit of the Rankrupt
Act; that I do not give in property
to tho Tax Receiver at its real value;
that I do not pay, or that I try to
evade the payment of debts, and pros
babiy that I am guilty of other
things of like character. I pronounce
each and every such charge a base,
malicious falsehood, Respectfully,
yours, &c., J. A. Billups.
And still they decline! Marcellus
Thornton, who some time ago an¬
nounced himself as an Independent
candidate in the Fifth Congressional
District, has withdrawn from the
race. Mr. Thornton is a young man
of uncommon ability, and we are
truly glad he has withdrawn from
the race without being slaughtered
like Emory Speer is going to be on
the 5th of next November.
— Married at tbe residence of J. T
Phillips, on tbe 19th inst., by Rev
J. R. Ivie, Mr. James U. Phillips to
Fannie Kirk, of this county.
We wish the couple abundant
happiness, and hope that tbeir matrix
monial bark will flow gently and
smoothly down tbe placid stream of
unalloyed bliss.
