THE REGIST ER
$1.50 Per Year \
LOCALS.
A drove of horses passed through
Carnesville ou Saturday.
S. M- Ayers is building a neat
dwelling house near the tan yard.
Several of the windows in the poor
house, are sadly in need of sash.
We predict favorable seasons and
good’ciops the preswit year.
The fanners put in good time
plowing, several days of last week.
D. W. Brooks of flie firm of
Brooks & W right has gone to mar¬
ket to buy a stock of goods
’ The sale and use of
drinks are increasing to an aldftning
extent in this county.
There are seven inmates now in
the county poor house, one white man
two white women, one colored man
and three colored women.
The Ordinary and -'own counci
are doing a good work in setting
out shade trees on the public square
and street' of Ca-nesville.
Would it not be a good idea to
set out trees, shrubs and flowers, in
the graveyards at the .Methodist and
Baptist churchs?
Rev. E. R. Carsw ell, jr., of
ton preached on the subject of the
unpardonable sin at the Baptist
chuich in that place fast Sunda y
While the Ordinary and Council
are on the line of improvements, we
suggest that they have the square
made smooth, and set Bermuda grass
where it is not already growing.
Let every form*, especially m the
no-fense districts, put in an aero or
two for a forage crop. Then if the
weather should be dry and the pas
tnres shou.d fail: they will have
green forage to splice out with.
^
We have heard several farmers'
speak highly of Sorghum as a for
age crop. Among them are E. K.
Mathew, H. A. Conger and A. T.
They have all given it
a trial.
A couple of prisouers escaped
from the Homer ja'l on last Wednes¬
day. The Sheriff, or jailor, let them
out of the iron cage on. account of
the severe cold, and they escaped
throngh the top of the room. They
were in jail for frivolous offences,
and unable to give bond, and it is
well perhaps that thev are out of
jail and out of the country. B

AN OLD MAN GONE.
Willis B. Thomason, one of the
oldest citizens of the county died a
few days ago and was buried at the
Carnesville Baptist church. He was
abeut 78 years old, and leaves a wid¬
ow to whom be was married over fif
ty years ago. He was a good citi
zen, and it is probable that he does
not leave an enemy in the world.
THE MAN THAT FAILED
Z’here is something to me digni
fied about a man who has failed.
He waa the kind of a man for whom
the Christian religion was invented.
The man who is a, success in this
world’s goods often hung around the
gypsy camp of Christ waiting to
come in, bnt he got little encourage
ment. As for the man who was rich
in respectability, he got none at all,
but vras yelled at, as»if he had been a
horse or jackass, “ Whoa! whoa! un¬
to thee.—Gath

DANGER OF BURIAL BEFORE
DEATH.
The following avt.cle, clipped from
an exchange, shows the danger of
early burials:
“Mount Joy Pa., Jan. 1.—Samuel
Smcftzer, who has just returned from
Red Lion, York county, reports the
people greatly excited over the nar¬
row escape of a citizeu from being
buried alive. Henry VV eichman
aged 45, who died suddenly, was
'being lowered into the grave, when
his weeping son suddenly cried out,
yl must see father once more, some¬
thing tells me he is not dead.” The
young man’s appeal was gianted, and
the lid of the coffin was removed.
The body was found to be warm, and
was carried back to the house, where
the supposed dead man slowly re.
gained consciousness, and is supposed
to begetting well” ' 1

TOO EASILY HUMBUGGED.
Many of those who bought the
Wrought Iron Range Cook Stove
V year ago, at the high price of $65,
ire very much dissatisfied with their
bargains, They could have bought
stoves in Elberton for $18 or $20
which would have given better "Satis¬
faction. This is one trouble with
many of our people they are too eas¬
ily humbugged. Let a stranger
come along with something new
and offer to sell it on time, and many
people will be induced to buy !t
w t l611 they can do without it. or could
^ mu ch better at home purchasing
froma man whom they knew to be
reliable. Bad management keeps as
^ an y p eo j>te poor as anything else.—

Miss Van Zadt is 21 years old, well
educated, sensible, and will inherit a
fortune of several hundred thousand

The venerable James Jackson*

ton, used to say that a man came to
the prime of effective faculties when
he was 65 year s old. He said fliat
it was true that the curve of physi¬
cal strength was than declining.
But experiencG and the ability to
act which comes from experience,
are.'of course, constantly improving
while memory holds. According *o
Dr. Jackson, the curve of experience

DR. ARMSTRONGS FALL
It will l?e remembered by our
our readers that Dr. Armstrong

for improper conduct as a minister
He waa charged with being drunk
in Cincinnati, but he denied the
charge most Utterly, and it w?s not
satisfactorily proven. It was proved

visited a number of disreputable
houses, and he was suspended
