7’fiere is some trouble between J
T. Mabry and the county authorities
in reference to the public bridge at
the River mills. Mr. Mabry who
built the bridge, demands a larger
sum for the work than the commiss
ioners are willing to pay.
The dog that passed through
Carnesville Friday was a week ago
was killed by Mr. Carlyle Crow on
Saturday following. He bit a dog, a
cat and a gander at Mr. Crows. The
dog was certainly mad and all the
dogs that were bitten should he
killed at once.
Mr. Stribling, the teacher at Mar¬
tin is making a fine impression upon
his patrons, and they speak of his
ability as a teacher in the highest
terms. "We aie told that he is well
informed as to the improved and
moderu metho ds of teaching.
The many friends of Col. J. C
Mason wUi be sorry to bear of bis se¬
rious illness. He was stricken with
paralysis something over two w eeks
ago, and bis case is considered Well
nigh hopeless, though he bad improv
slightly when we last heard Irom
him.
Our former neighbor, J. C. Black
well spent Saturday night in Carnes
ville. He is landlord of the Central
Hotel in Harmony Grove. Ga., and
is doing a go od business. The Cen¬
tral is one of the neatest and best
>>
furnished hotels in this part of th e
State. The fare is unsurpassed and
charges ate reaso nable.
Judge Bowery lost a son and
daughtei last w eek, but they were
found by a nice young lady and gen¬
tleman in the neighborhood, that is
to say, there were a couple of mar¬
riages in the family. J. E. Bond
married Miss Pink Bowers, and Ne
hemiab Bowers married Miss Lecie
Glover. We tr ust that the happy
young people may be blessed with
health, happiness and
J. M. C. jCagwell, a former citi¬
zen of Carnesville was in town Sat¬
urday, Sunday and Monday. He is
employed as salesman for Bosworth
& Co. { of Atlanta. If bis character
for integrity was as well known ev¬
erywhere as it is here, he would soon
build up an immense trade for his
house. We are glad to see him look
ng so well an d to learn that his
prospects are brightening.
The Carnesville Grange disbanded
on Saturday last. If the organization
was of any v alue to its members, it
ought to have been hoid together,
but we think no great good Is ac¬
complished by the graugc. The en¬
ergies of the grangers have been ex
pended mainly in trying to drive
good bargains lu buying gtuiuo uud
goods on credit. What the farmers
most need is to think—to figure out
the loss and gain in their farming
operations. We have more faith in
an agricultural club than any farmers
organization of whioh we have any
knowledge’
GUNNELL’S DISTRICT.
Rev. Groves H. Cartledge. The
J \ Influence of a good Man.
The territory included in Gun¬
nells distiict embraces one of the
finest sections of country in this
part of the State. A stranger pass'
\jng through that part of the eoun
•y would be s urprised at the number
>f elegant rasid cnees and well oider
farms. Much of the lend is in a
high state of cultivation and the
farmers are generally prosperous.
Hie people of that section have long
oeen noted for their peacable and law j
abiding character, and 'heir names
have seldom appeared either on the :
1 civil or criminal dockets of i li e courts.
On that side ot the county the pe j
.»l e are well awake on the subject of
female education. A number of
-their youDg ladies are now Ringed,

i n ary at Gainesville. G. L. Carson
has three daughters there, Robert
Neal one, Pat Neal one, and J. F.
Shann on. is sending his sister-in lav/,
Miss Martin, which makes a good
showing for one neighborhood.
rv’e t hisk that much of the peace
harmony ancl pleasant state of af¬
fairs that has long prevailed in that
section, is due to the life long exam¬
ple and labors of Rev. Groves H.
Cartlecge. For more than thirty
years he 1ms lived in their midst, and
been the pastor of Hebron church.
But few people have labored more
earnestly for their people than he, or
exerted a more striking influence.
The neighborhood that has the beu»
efit of the example and influence of
such a man, for a third of a century
is surely blessed
