A GREAT EARTHQUAKE IN
EUROPE.
1 the
An earthquake occurred in
Southern part of Europe lait week
which resulted in great loss of life
I and'propcrty- It was most severe in
i the South Eastern part of France.
I f The centre of .disturbance was near
the city of Nice in the province of
I Alpcs Maritinnes in the extreme south
f eastern part of Prance, though j the
| shock was felt over a vast extent of
territory. Houses were thrown down,
rocks were precipitated into the sea
and hurled down the sides of the
Alps, glaciers were set in motion that
went crtishiug down the sides of the
mountains, sweeping villages before
them or grinding them into powder.
The bssof life so far as ascertained
is over 2,000 and the destruction of
property amounts to many millions.
Wo suggest that some of our
learned professors who brought their
great wis lom to bear upon the Charles
ion earthquake, go over fo Europe
and point out the locality of the “land

Jy f pUguii U Imhrttuiij,
ju excess is hitherto reported aa al¬
most confined to physicians Its ef¬
fects upon its victims are very sad.
The brain becomes permanently or
for a period affected, » spoons of
lunacy being produced. Just as in the
case of opium eaters, the moral na¬
ture j is undermined, One doctor
was reported, so recently as to be
within the memory of oui readers, as
having turned on the gas in a drng
store where, the alkaloid was refused
him, with the design of asphyxiating
the clerk, in which attempt he nearly
succeeded. Another doctor, within
a space of soino sixtcc n month*, has
gone insane from the cocaine habit
and baa been removed to an asylum
leaving his wife also i.l lrom the ef¬
fects of the same drug, with which
he hsd experimented on her.
If the cases continue to multiply,
there may be room for questioning
the utility to man of the diseoveiy
of this anesthesia. It is doubtful if
all the services in local uufesthesia
rendered by it can compensate for
the ill it has already done:
LETTER FROM COL. MATTOX
IIbaiidmext, Ga., February, 1, 1887
bert County Fertilizer Company:
Gents:-You a»’< m* for the effects
of guano last year and especially as to
my opinion after another years ex
pt-rience with your goods. Iu reply
I have to say;—With an
experience of twenty-five years, I
regard last year as the most unfa¬
vorable year I eycr saw for all ki nds
of manure*, it demonstrate* to me
most satisfactorily that Dr. Jones is
correct in his advice to farmers: To
vary the application of your manure
as your lands vary in character, when
I used your Cotton Seed Compound
'ast year and put it in close to the
seed the benefits were paying, when
I did otherwise the advantages were
lets,
On light lands I believe we ou ght
to use 75th immediately under and
close to the seed, and about the first
or second working about 1 5th more
around thc'Vrop. I believe this plan
would insure success any year wet or
dr ** - V im additionUMabor would
hot be very considerable, nothing,
compared with the advantage denv
ed and the insurance secured. Urge
this upon your up country patrons
who use your goods, and I feel sure
they will stilt hold your at
do. in the very highest estimation.
It is the very food cotton requires,
but like all manures, when bulked ex¬
cessive rams leach it out it before
the crop consumes it, or excessive
dry and hot weather will cause if to
fir if we pul it lAl in at one time we
take that risk.. A am satisfied that
there is no better manure for cotton
made, than your Cotton Seed Coin
pound. Respectfully.
