THEY ALL DO SOME GOOD.
There are but few people who fail
..to accomplish some good in the
world. There is an element for good
in nearly all men that makes itself
felt at somotime. Some who have
a broad deep love for humanity,
t. ,
spread sunshine and happiness
wherever they go. Another spends
a lifetime iu the laboratory or work¬
shops or gazirg at the stars, and
|
makes discoveries tint bless all man¬
kind. One may be a lamentable
failure financially, but rear a family
of superior children and leave a wide
influence for good behind him. The
very blunders failures and misfortues
of some men, serve as a warning to
and a guide foi those that follow
after, them. The depravity and
wiokcdncss of one, may disgust oth¬
ers and save them from similar wick
ed and depraved eonduct. The
hard-fisted, penuirous and heartless,'
mizerly skinflint does least good of
a 1. There is hardly a community
in which men arc not to be found
who are worth nothing whatever to
the world. They take but never
give. But a time comes when even
they are worth something to fhe
world, that is, when they die, and
their ill ° gotten and horded gold ° goes
into tie hands of men who know
how to use it more wisely than them
selves. -

SUGAR MADE FROM COAt TAR.
Foss!l>la Results of n Discovery Mmlo lu
Germany—Various Adulterations.
The scientific world is just now inter¬
ested in a teccnt discovery, by whiclfcoal
'*ar originated is made into /sugar.' Tho enterprise
in Germany, but i3 attracting
general attention in this country, pr. T.
C. Minor, who kpeps posted on everything,
was called upon to give some facts on coal
tar sugar.
“Tho new substitute for sugar,” re¬
marked Dr. Minor, “is called saccharine,
and is really a product of coal tar. It
will add an additional value to the refuse
of gas works. Its discoverer was Folil
berg, who formerly lived in tho east, but
resides at the present time, I think, in
Hamburg.”
“Has tie new substance’been intro¬
duced to commerce?”
“Not to any large extent, owing to its
cost, for it is worth about $12 per pound.
Yet ono pound of saccharine will sweeten
10,000 pounds of water.”
“How is it prepared for the sugar mar¬
ket?”
“Tho preparation used in Europo is an
admixture of glucose and dextrin. Ono
pound of saccharine will ] convert 3,000
pounds of glucose into tho very best grade
of ordinary table sugar; that is, it will re¬
semble table sugar as regards sweetness,
without tho nutritious qualities of tho real
article.”
“You don't mean to say that there is
no nutrition in saccharine, doctor?”'
‘‘Yes; it lias little or no nutritious prop¬
erty, and is merely an adulterant.”
“Is it likely that it will be ever used on
a large scale as an adulterant in tho
United States?”
“Of course,” replied Dr. Minor, saccharine “when
the process of making tho is
cheapened. I would bo willing to pre¬
dict that every large gas works in the
country will be soiling saccharine as a
refuse principle in tho next twenty years,
and that there will be enough profit in tho
business to malto illuminating gas fer
nothing; in other words, tho present gas
works will bo a saccharine manufacturing
establishment, while tho refuse will bo il¬
luminating gas. Anilino colors and am¬
monia salts will be made under tho same
roof as the coal tar from which the sac¬
charine is devolved. ’ ’
“What is tho process of making sac¬
charine, doctor?”
“That question can be answered better
by a chemist,” said Dr. Minor. “It is
usual, however, to toko what is called tho
tpluene in coal tar and treat this sub¬
stance with phosphorus pentacliloridc; it
is the cost of this other article that ren¬
ders tho manufacture of saccharine so ex¬
pense Yet, oven as expensive as it is,
a qu- of sugar can now lie manufac
fared even cheaper than New Orleans
cane sugar.” tlio result of this
“What will bo new
adulterant?’ • i
“It will cheapen tho cost of sweetening and
materjajs in groceries and candies
will enhance the value of real cano sugar*
just as tho price of pure butter has been
increased by ' tho vile adulteration; .Wild oleo¬
margarine, The working people,
now pay tax on every pound of sugar
they consume, can enjoy glucose, the
product of corn, adulterated with saccha¬
rine-, which lias lio nutritious qualities.
Pure butter, pure sugar and pure milk
will always cost a large price and only
be witlijn reach- of the wealthy.- Why,
oven modern Chicago lard is,now said to
be largely made from cotton seed oil.
This is tho ago of adulteration, and about
the only ptiro article left to tho mass of
humanity are plain bread and water.”
“How about coffee and tea, doctor?” -
“Coffee in tho berry, unbrowned and
unground, can not bo imitated, but three"
fourths of tho ground coffees on tho. mar¬
ket are adulterated, As for tea, Ce^lcn
is now tho great producing palmed country for
cheap teas, which are off in
Europe for fine‘Chinese goods. Ceylon
teas lack much of tho - theino or active
principle of tea that is foiind In tho genu¬
ine Hong Kong chops.”—Cincinnati Eu-j
quirer.

Sites for Farm Houses.
The farmer's home is,_ much of the
time, in the field and out'about the
premises or off to tho market place,'aud
hence he suffers from no confinement
under, bad conditions. Even if his nights
under tho roof are not confined exactly of the
best, owing to being in close
quarters or from bad air arising froilr un¬
der or within tho house,- his day- outdoors
dissipates much of e vil that comes to him
in the night timo and ho may not 1)0 ma
terially harmed. But with tho wife tho
case is quite different. The house is her
field, and she cannot, if she would, escape
from .anydamaging influences that exist
under the roof. The plan for such farm
buildings as are to be carefully erected Die coming
year should be’vpry considered
during the winter; and not only tho plans,
but the lepation,-'as to drainage “and dis
tance from any pointer points upon the
farm whence malaria may arks’. As is
well known, the prevailing winds are i
from the west and southwest; and, per
haps, tlie most unusual of all are from
the northeast. Hence, if the-question there of
location is important, is any
especially damaging spot on or near the
farm, and should ba considered and acted
