THEY ALL DO SOME GOOD.
There are but A-w people who fail
accomplish some good in the
world. There is an element for good
in nearly all men that makes itself
felt at sometime. Some who have
a broad deep love for humanity,
C spread sunshine and happiness
wherever they go. Another spends
. lifetime ft the laboratory or wort
shops or gazirg at the stars, and
makes , disco venes tint bless all man
kind. One mnv be a lamentable
failure financially, but rear a family
of tuiierior children and leave a wide
influence for good behind him. The
very blunders failures and misfortues
of some men, serve as u warning to
and a guide foi those that follow
after, them. The dej/ravity and
wickedness of one, may disgust oth¬
ers and save them from similar wick-
ed and depraved eonduet. The
hard-fisted, penuirous and heartless,
mizerly skinflint does least good of
a I. There is hardly a community
in which men are not to be found
who are worth nothing whatever to
the world. They take but never
give. But a time comes when even
they are worth something to the
world, that is, when they die, and
their ill gotten and horded gold goes
into tie hands of men who know
how to use it more wisely than them
selves.

SUGAR MADE FROM COAL TAR.
rossIMo Results of a XMseovcry Miulo tu
Cormanj-—Various A dullcrutlons.
Tlie scientific world is just now inter
eeteil in a icccnt, discovery, by wlucll-coal
tar is made into .sugar. Tho entorprisa
originated in Germany, hut ia attracting
general attention in this country. l)r, T.
C. Minor, who kpeps posted on everything,
was called upon to give some facts on coal
tar sugar.
“Tho new substitute for sugar,” re¬
marked Dr. Minor, “is called saccharine,
and is really a product of coal tar. It
will add an additional value to the refuse
of gas works. Its discoverer was Fold
berg, who formerly lived in tho east, but
resides at the present time, I think, in
“Has tie new substance’ been intro¬
duced to commerce?”
“Not to any large extent, owing to its
cost, for it is worth about $12 per pound.
Yet ono pound, of saccharine will sweeten
10,000 pounds of water.”
“How is it prepared for the sugar mar¬
ket?”
“Tho preparation used in Europe is an
admixture of glucose and dextrin. Ono
pound of saccharine will convert 2,000
pounds of glucose into tho very best grade
of ordinary tablo sugar; that is, it will ro
semble tablo sugar as regards sweetness,
without tho nutritious qualities of the real
article.”
“You don’t mean to say that there is
no nutrition in saccharine, doctor?’”
‘ ‘Yes; it lias little or no nutritious prop¬
erty, and ia merely an adulterant.”
“Is it likely that it will be ever used on
a large scalo as an adulterant in the
United States?”
“Of course,” replied Dr. Minor, “when
tlie process of making the saccharine is
cheapened, I would bo willing to pre¬
dict that every largo gas works in the
country will be selling saccharine as a
refuse principle in the next twenty years,
and that there will be enough profit in tho
business to mako illuminating gas’ fer
nothing; in other words, tho present gas
works will bo a saccliarine manufacturing
establishment, while tho refuse will bo il¬
luminating gas. Anilino colors and am¬
monia salts will be made under tho samo
roof as the coal tar from which tho sac¬
charine is devolved.”
“What is tho process of making sac¬
charine, doctor?”
“That question can bo answered better
by a chemist,” said Dt. Minor. “It is
usual, however, to toko what is called the
toluene in coal tar and treat this sub
stanco with phosphorus pentachloride; it
is tlie cost of this other article that ren¬
ders the manufacture of saccharine so ex
pensi- •Yet, oven as expensive as it is,
a qu.. of sugar- can now lie manufac¬
tured even cheaper than New Orleans
cane sugar. ’ ’
“Wliat will bo tlio result of tliis new
adulterant?” ' !
“It will cheapen the cost of sweetening
materials in groceries and candies and
will enhance the value of real cano sugar;
just as tho price of pure butter has been
increased by * tho vile adulteration, oleo¬
The working people, .Adio
now pay tax on every pound of sugar
they consume, can enjoy glucose, the
product of com, adulterated with saccha¬
rine; which has no nutritious qualities.
Pure butter, pure sugar and pure milk
will always cost a large price and only
be withjn reach- of the wealthy. Why,
even modern Chicago lard is,now said to
be largely made from cotton seed oil.
This is the ago of adulteration, and about

“How about coffee and tea, doctor?” •
“Coffee in tho berry, unbrowned and
ungF ound, can not bo imitated, hut three
fpurihs of the ground coffees on the mar¬
ket are adulterated, As for tea, Ccylcn
isnojv tho great producing palmed country for
cheap teas, which arc off in
Europe for fine'Chinese goods. Ceylon
teas lack much of the - theme or active
principle of tea that is found in tho’genu¬

Sifea for Farm Houses.
Tlie farmer’s home ip., much of the
time, in the field arid out about the
premises or off to tho market place,'and
hence he suffers from no confinement
under bad conditions. Even if his nights
under tho roof being are not confined exactly of the
best, owing to in close
quarters or from bad ah-arising frorii un¬
der or within tho house,- his day- outdoors
dissipates much of .evil that comes to him
in the night time and ho may not be nja
terially liarmed. But with the wife tho
case is” quite different . Tlio liouso is her
field, and she cannot, if She would, escape
from, any damaging influences that exist
under the roof. The plan for such farm
buildings as are to be erected the coining
year should bo very carefully considered
during tho winter; and not only tho plans,
but the location,- as to drainage"and points dis¬
tance from any pointer upon the
farm whence malaria may arise. As is I
well known, the prevailing southwest; winds are
from the west and and,, per- ( !
haps, tlie most unusual of all are from
the northeast. Hence, the» question of
location is important, if there is any
especially damaging lie considered spot on or mar tho |
