s Lotto* has been mentioned as the
principal crop. The other field crops
rank in importance about in the fol
lowing’order: Lorn, Vheat, oats,
hay including -fodder, sorghum,
m sweet potatoes, peas and Leans.
CORN which used te Le the main
crop hay- recently taken the second
place. Various causes have contri*
buted to the waning importance of
the corn crop. Among th an may be
mentioned, the «uiur..cr drouth, the
decrease in the productive capacity
of holtjni lauds, due mainly to the
filling up of the streams, the facilities
for obtaining western corn from the
merchants, by means,of the recently
constructed rail roads, and the mania
for cotton raising. *v
The yield of corn is anywhere from
5 to 50 basbelsperacre. The average
yield is probably 10 or 12 bushels
per acre. I be lew lands are usually
too wet in the spring and the uplands
too dry in in id-summer (owing to
our system of farming) to realize fair
crops on either. The productive
capacity of our land* might easily be
brought to, from 23 to 75 bushels per
acre. The largest yield of corn on a
single acre, that wc have known in
this county; was about tic year 1847
or 1848, and was 74^. bushels. It
was produced on Toms creek on new.
ground swamp land, without fertili¬
zers, and was platiled and cultivated
exclusively with hoes.
WHEAT is not regarded as a very
certain crop. Tne obstacles are
freezes and thaws in the winter, frosts
late in the spring, wet weather ai.d
rust. The yield is all aloug from the
seed sown, to 20 bushels per acre.
The average yield fov seiies of years
is G or 8 bushels per acre. In raio
instances the yield exceeds 20 bushels
per acu
OATS are icgaided as a somewhat
uueerthiu crop, ranging from a few
bushels to 40 bushels per acre, win¬
der frosts and spring dionlhs are the
chief enemies of the out crop. Both
might be cbviut cd in 1 ; great measure
by planting early in the fall.
- HAY. There has been, scarcely
any effoit at hay raising in ibis coun¬
ty. A lew experiments have been
mcoe with clover, and ou stro.g lei

been most giatifying. A few- per

cease to run in the dryest season. It
would be difficult to find a healthier
climate. Sudden and extreme chan*
g«s are not common. It is hardly
probable thatthe thermometer,

once in a'quarter of a century. We
have never seen the thermometer at
100 and never saw it at zero but once,
which was in the winter following
ihe summer of 1885: The great
number of extremely old people living
in this part of the state bears evidence
of the healthfuliiess of the climate:
Iii 1885 there were twenty couples
living in the who had been
married more than 50 years:
It would he hard to say u hat dis¬
ease is most prevalent, or with what
disease the greatest number of per¬
sons die. Malarial diseases, while
comparatively rate, arc more frequent
than many years ago, though not so
common ns ten years hack. Lousump
tion, bronchitis and kindred diseases
aro becoming more frequent. We
are not i# be undarstood asindiea
fing that the foregoing diseases are
by any means frequent, on tho con*
