THE INTERNAL REVENUE
MUST GO.
I Infamous is a moderate word for Ibis
[ | abomination. Why is it an aboniina
tion? AVliy is it infamous?
1. If there is any one thing settled
! in the policy of our government it is
| that in time of peace our revenues
j should be collected at the custom house
and not by a direct tax.
2. All the taxes collected on spirits
ought to go to the States, and is is a
crime against local self-government to
make a few of the States contribute
one-third of the whole reveuuo to sup
port the government.
?1. To ccnvcrt the. United State s
courts into piolice courts for investiga¬
tion of such cases as a gang of spies
nnd infomiers can get up, taking poor,
helpless peopile out of their respective
counties, and sometimes more than 100
miles from home, to be tried among
strangers, without friends, nnd, indeed
with no knowledge^ often, of a single
human being at the court except the
spits that arrested them, is a public
wrong os grievous as any one in the
Declaration of Independence, which
brought on the war of the Revolu¬
tion,
4, Under this systent making whisky
is the greatest numctloly in the United
States, end has resulted in nn organiza¬
tion t for perpetuating the monopoly
which is dangerous in the extreme.
5. Nothing remains of all the war
measures adopted, tlmt is day by day
making for the Federal government . so
many enemies ns the shot-gun policy of
collecting taxes, and which, in eases of
the meet horrible murders, deprives
the State courts of jurisdiction to try
the criminals.
ft. Permitting this Republican aqciu*
inaticn to remain on the statute hook is
an indorsement of the most odious of
p.U the Republican measures enacted —
and Certainly the one most directly at
w nr with Democratic policy.

judge Dowers, President, of

else would do, and that no one else

own peculiar politics/ and religious
views and stand# by them through
thick and thin. While many peo¬

honesty of heart mid purpose. lie
is an unselfish public spirited ' man
who has done more to develop his
immediate section of the State than

roads, he devoted to each road about
one year of valuable time and labor,
