Tt» e wife of Thomas G. WooBulk,
the murderer, married him a f« w
months ago, and lived with him only
a few days, has been intervened. f*he
mo he decicved her iuto a marriage of
whwti she repented the next day. She
left him in less than a week, was induc¬
ed to return but left him for good in a
da? or two. She says he is not insane
but i« only a heartless ami mean, and
express no symphthy for him.
DECLINE OF THE KNIGHTS OF
LABOR,
-
The pajwrs which were among Hie
firm to predict its succe** arc now
chronicling the sign* of its disintegra¬
tion. The measlier* are falling away
from the order, not by dozens and
score*, bnt by hundred* and thousands.
A single district assembly in Massachu¬
setts whidi liad Kl.000 members now
has but 27,000 on its roll. One in Chi¬
cago which mustured 21MJU0 now retains
but 2,000 in good standing—that is,who*
will submit to jwy their regular dues.
These are not isolated cases. We have
a long list of smaller assemblies: One
of 7,000 which has fallen toibiOfi; OIK*
of 1,100 to 250; one of 700 to 150; one
of 000 to 00, and in this ratio a. larger
number of others are similarly reduced.
But the greatest blow to the pros¬
perity of the enter is flie loss of its
prestige. Victory no longer perches
upon it* batmen. Its edicts are neith
respected nor obeyed, and its .rilered
strikes when inaugumted are not sue
eessful. The thunders of its wrath
prove to he only the sheet iron imite.
tions familiar to the play-house, and its
boycotts scare no on. hut children.
It is becoming impotent even for mis¬
chief. It may rally, it may have
spasm* of recovery, but they will be
briefer at each succeeding struggle,
for its power in on the wane.—New
York Journal of Commerce.
THE TREASURY CLURKg
Flitting in the Corridois of the Na¬
tional Treasury Ruilding.
Sofne time ago the chief clerk of
the Treasury Department issued au
order prohibiting clerks from visit-'
ing and promenading the corridors'
during business hours. Prior to this
time the treasuiy girls spent cousid
viable time in visiting each other
and w walking leisurely around the
corridors with favorite masculine
clerks. For a time the new* order
effectually suppressed the abuse
aimed at, as all persons found visit¬
ing and walking abot t idly was re
prrtcd to tLediict cleik. The order still
produces good results, yd many male

which the may tnjoy a premenade o t

ih« minions of the chief cle:k. The
treasury building is about two bun*
dred by three h indi ed feet in di¬
mensions. It is quadrangular iu
form, with a central wing
ing ftom east to list, thus conven¬
ing iuto a double quadrangle. Two
elevators located iu distant corners
of the building carry all comers from
floor to floor, The length of the
corridors of each »tory extended in
a straight line is a full quarter of a
mile, and as there are four stories
we have a full mile of corridors,
forming, with their tiled floor*, fres¬
coed wslfej and vaulted ceilings, a
cLarming promenade. To be

GERMAN MILLET AS A

I)r. II. G. Freeman ha* been making
atu-ccan of German millet for
year*. A* a forugc crop, he
ea it superior to anything he ha*
tried. Hi* millet tin* year was
than live feet high, thick on the

great. We judge from the appearance
of nis crop, that tlie yield of forage
would lie twiee or thrice a* valuable a*

i* no new experiment with Dr. Free¬
man, he I mis been raising it for years
always with the very best result.
We sea on Dr. Freeman’s farm,
proof of the truth on an idea we have
been advancing for several years. We
have insisted that owing to the filling
up of the streams with sand and the
frequency of overflows, due mainly to
aur methods of upland ditch, the bot¬
tom lands cannot be relied upon for a
crop with any sort of certianty. That
well lying uplanps are really the most

We remember, and it is only a little
while hack, when such lands as Dr.
Freeman* were regarded as almost
worthless, hut he is today one of the
most prosperous farmers in the county,
and raises abundant crops of everything.
Ilia ]pml is level, it has a good subsoil,
it ha* been brought up to a good state
of cultivation, and is a most productive
