THE RE GISTER
Tuesday November 1st
TIIE PREACHER ANJ3 THE
ACTRESS.
S<‘ine time since Rev. Warm A.
Candler preach rd a sermon in Nash
vilte in winch it is s«i<l lie swsep
ingiy denounced theatres and actors.
At the conclusion of the sermon
Miss Emma Abbott arose in the
church a,id replied to the sermon*
briefly and pointedly, and in sting¬
ing terms. Miss Abbott is an ae
trtss of note und a noble woman,
wife and mm Ikt.
The event has caused considerable
comment iu the newspapers the re
ligioos press siding with Mr Candler
ai,d the secular press siding gener¬
ally, with Miss Abbott, The sensa¬
tion has been greatly increased by
an article printed in the American,
purporting to come from imminent
divine, and defending Miss Abbolt.
There was a good deal of scoffing
at, and pitying the emnm ent di.
vino for awhile* but the announce¬
ment of his name fell like a t'mn
bolr, in the Methodist camp. The
defender of J/jss Abbott is lley,.Mr,
Kelley, one-of the great lights of
the Methodist church in Tennessee
and the South.
. "'e bale not read 31 r.
sermon, and so fur as we know
has not been published, and
forc cun form no estimate of
grounds for complaint upon the part
of 3Ii*s A bbott.
We have read a good many arti¬
cles; inking the gioiiud substanti¬
ally, that the pulpit should not he
criticised by the press. 3Ve think
this position is untenable. No man
or set of men can claim a position
above legitimate criticism. The
doctrine that tho king or priest is
ubove criticism, and can do no harm
wUi do where a despot rules, and
where Hope and priest think for
the people; hut it can never be forced
upon a free people in a protestant
country.
A middle ground is probably near¬
est correct. There is much teen at
theatres that is reprehensible and ac¬
tors and actrcses are not always what
they should be; much is also heard
lrom the pulpit that is not commen¬
dable and priest and | readier are
not always what tiny .maid be. It
is a sufo j lau to jondeiun evil and
commend good wherever found.
WIPING OUT OLD SCORES.
A Shiftleds Fellow Murder* a Jus*
tic.*, tho Mayor and Ilmiself.
A shocking tragedy oecuired at
Maxwell, Story county, Iowa, one
which has plunged that community
into the deepest gloom.
Perry Ackers, a shiftless fellow,
started out early in the ereuing,
guying he was going to “settle some
old scores,” He borrowed a re¬

on the pretmee that he wanted to
shoot a dog:
He then w«nt straight to the of¬
fice of Justice of the Peace Sahmet
*er, and after asking him, “Are
you ready to lake your medicine?”
administered it W ithout further ex.
plana ti on, shooting him in the
left lower jaw, the bali passing dawn
aud out under the left shoulder
blade.
Ackars next entered the office ol
Mayor French, and stealing up be
h ; nd him sent a bullet iuto his
brain. Tha mayor never uttered a
word buf died within uu hour.
The murder th«n pasaed into the
street, hu crime a* yet being un¬
known, and meeting several citizens
he talked in a threatening manner
about evening up old scores and
brandished his icvolver fweljr be¬
fore the frightened citizen*.
Pasting on the entrance to Odd
Fellows’ Hall, ht **id “good bye”
to the poet master, and shot him¬
self, dying immediately,
