Th* Gospel at the Methodist
Churofc on Sunday by Key,
G. H. Cartledge.
llev. G. II. Cartledge preached at
the Methodist church on Sunday
from the following text :
“Come unto mo, all ye that labour,
and are heavy laden, and I will give
you re»t.”
Mr. Cartledge said, “while there
are three persons in the trinity and
God the father is the chief person
in the Godhead, in the gospel dispon-,
sation, Christ is the chief person,
Christ rules this world directly
Everything has been plac ed in his
hands. Heulth, life, prosperity,
physicial and spiritual blessings are
from him. Most of the expositors
of this text have given it an inter¬
pretation that is too narrow. No
matter what the labor is that is to
be performed, no matter what ihe
burden is that must b« borne, it is
coyercd by the text. The farmer who
is engaged in the onerous labors of
his calling, and exposing himself to
the fatigues of the field, the fierce
heat of the summer and the pelting
blasts of winter, is the man spoken
to in the text. Bu,t not only the
farmer, the good house wite who
cooks and washes and scrubs, an?|
has the care of the children, and of
the household, and whoso work is
never done, is also spoken to in the
text. The merchant who is carry¬
ing many business caies is meant
and fpoken to in the text, and so
with all men whose uiindf and bod¬
ies are burdened,
The Lord loves us, but what does
us mean? A body is essential to
man, it requires both the body and
soul to make the man. Christ died
to save and redeem our souls and
also our bodies. I have no sympai
tliy with the idea of mortifying the
body; unholy lusts and deeds of the
flesh must be mortified, but it is
right to take care of our bodies ant
preserve health and strength. We
should seek cyeiy possible good ant
comfort - for our bodies, It is
the lot of most men to toil; but few
escape it and noue should escape.
When the body and mind are borne
down with burdens, go to the Lord
and he will give you rest. If your
bodies are weary, go to the Lord and
he will give you rest. Do yon want
to know how to get bodily rest from
the Lord, go to Him when you are
tired and you will find out, I do
not know how ho does it; I only
know it is done.
Ot all things, faith is the most
restful, carry everything to God in
faith and prayer, whether temporal
or spiritual. The universal faith
that trusts God for everything is
truly restful. We should care for
the body bill it is not of greatest
importance; tbo most important part
of man, is that which feels, knows
and thinks, aud must continue to
fee], know, think and live forever.
The body will soon decay, but the
soul must live on. The soul is some
times heavily laden vvidi burdens;
buidcns perhaps of uupardoned sin,
that hecomo to heavy to he borne
and the unhappy sufferei takes his
own life. Such persons should carry
their burdens to God, He alone can
relieve them and forgive sin.
•The Sinner sees that his sins are
carrying him to nun, he tries to do
better, love God and have faith. He
coucludcs that if he will do better the
Lord will have mercy on him and he
got to heaven. This is Phariseism;
fe wants to do half or three-fourths
of the work and let God do the bal¬
ance. God never saitlior you to do
any part, He only says come unto
me all ye that are weary and heavy
laden and I will give you rest. The
only thing the sinner has to do
in the first instance, is to go to God,
who will give him faith and grace
and rest. The smner, to be saved
las only to come to Christ, receive
faith and lest and then he can go to
work, and the deeds will follow. No
matter how great the sinner nor how
wicked, he has nothing tp do hut to
go to God, and after he is saved and
has a new heart, then Iib gocs to
work and N
exercises bis spiritual life
>y doing good. We ought, to preach
aith and works both. The mistake
that sinners make, is that they will
ijo to work and make themselves bet¬
ter. What they need to do, is, to
pray tor a new tieait.

South and is one of the great papers
ot the world. Its growth is without
precedent ami its enterprise has nev¬

jiotent, not only in Georgia, hut
throughout the United States. Its
facilities for collecting news from
every part of the country, its able
presentation of all questions of inter¬
est to the people, have made it al
most a necessi y in every household
in Georgia. No intelligent family can
well dispense with it, a*d the low
rate of subscription has placed it
witnin the reach of the humblest
citizen. We receive the news
through the Constitution twenty*
four hours in advance of any other
paper published: in the State, which
in fact accounts for its great popu¬
larity in this county. More space
devoted to agriculture and education,
would make the Constitution the
most complete and greatest paper
this side of the Ariantic.
