SUNDAY'S SERMON
At the Methodist Church by the

RESIST THEDEVIl
And He will flee from You. James
4 Chap. 7 Verse
Rev. A. J. Hughes preached at the
Methodist church on Sunday from
the following text:
Resist the devil and be will flee
from yon. Draw nigh to God and he
aad he hands will draw sinners, nigh to yon. Cleanse
your ye and pnrify
yonr hearts ye doable minded. Be
afflicted and mourn and weep, let
and your laughter joy be heaviness. turned to mourning,
yonr to Humble
he yourself shall lift in the sight of the James Lord and 4th
Chap. 7th, 8th, yon 9th, np.
and 10th verses.
The text presents three ideas, 1st
resist the devil and he will flee from
yon. 2nd, Draw nigh unto the Lord
and he will draw nigh unto you. 3td
The manner of drawing nigh unto the
Lord. The devil is wise and cun¬
ning and powerful, but wise, skillful
and conning aahe is, he cannot harm
you unless be gets you into
temptation. He is always on the
alert, always soliciting, bat can never
harm yon unless he excites your
ptide, engrosses you with the world,
fires yonr lusts or leads you into
some temptation. Keep within the
fold and you are safe. Lions prowl
around the fold, but the lambs with,
in are safe, because the sheppard is
near. Angels ot the Lord camp
around the Christian, and the devil
cannot harm yon unless you yield.
It is possible to yield, to fail to resist,
you may get off the ballance, go
astray and be destroyed The scrip,
tures furnish abundant proof that
you may fail to resist. It is un
scriptural to say that you will not
yield, and are not in danger. Why
are*we taught to resist tbe devil if
we are oeiUin to resist? If you
ean but certainly resist, thaw is no
danger in temptation, no danger of
falling and it was to
have said “resist the devil said he
will flee from you." It as act

It said that there are some persons
so good, that when the devil meets
them m the road, he tips his bat and
walks around-them.
It is a great privilege to draw
nigh to God before we get to heaven,
One man of old walked with God a;.d
one day be walkei so far that he
never retarded. We may not only
have the angels camped around ns,
but may live close to God himself.
But how are we to get close to God!
There is a negative and a positive
work of preparation. You must get
rid ot unclean hands, and this means
business transactions. There are
thousands of men in Georgia who
lave closed the way to heaven
against themselves, by getting money
wrongfully and by witholding wages
ustly earned, and which they never
intend to pay. It is possible for
such men to clean their hands, to
make restitution and get to heaven
>nt they never intend to make res
titetion and heaven is closed against
them. There is a conscience fund at
Washington which is a hopeful sign.
Ifen have obtained money wrong,
ally, and conscience will not let
them rest. The injured one is gone
where they cann ot make restitution
and the money is Bent to the con
iciencefund at Washington, whieh
has swelled to many thousands. The
text probably includes all kinds of
improper transactions and wrong
doing. Let yonr laughter be turned
to mourning and your joy to heavs
iness on account of your sin. [H um ,
ble yourself in the sight of the
Lord awdt he will lift you up.
There is an active, positive work
to do- in order to approach near to
God. Study the scriptures, but
study not, «ts many do, for the pur¬
pose ot moping np some theory.
Such study will not oring yon nigh
to God. Study for the purpose of
learning the truU, and learning duty.

dered bis driver to take him to
ceitain bridge in the city of London.
The dnvei knew London well bat
on that day he could not find the
bridge, and after seyeial hours told
Cowper that he could not find it, and
was ordered to drive home. The
poet intended to leap from the bridge
into the nver and drown himself, and
on reaching home wrote a beautiful
poem which begins with the follow¬
ing verse.
God moves in a mysterious wsy,
His wonders to perform,
He plants his footsteps in the sea,
And rides upon the storm.
Not long since I visited a chre¬
tain home, and a prosperous one, I
love the man but he is too worldly
minded. His wife is belter than
he and I said, I hope yon will not be¬
come worldly minded; “Oh, no, ff she
replied M there is no danger of that
now, ainoe little Lu] a died.” The
only child had been taken away and
the mother felt that she Was weaned
from the earth and wedded to the
sky, and was safe from the snares of
the world.
A hermit once left his cell and
went out to look around in the
world, and fell in with a stanger
on the highway and they traveled
together. They passed the first
night with a man who treated them
very kindly, and next morning the
stranger took from him a golden
cap. The second night they staid
with a man who was unkind and
lodged them under ashed; when they
took leave of him, the stranger gave
him the golden cap. The third
night was passed with a kind man
who had a lovely child which the
strangi ir slew, and during the day
they ]»assed a m*n on a bridge and
st nmgi»r threw him into the stream
and h* was drowned. The hermit
exposts lated with him for his cruel¬
ty; but the stranger who was an an¬
gel answered; Z did these things in
mer*y. The from whom I
took the eup would have fixed his
heart uqpon it, and been led away
from heaven, I be man to whom I
gave it is already wedded to the
world .red it can do him no harm.
I slew the child because it was the
idol of da parents and would have
loft tl heaven, and the man I
drown sd, would nave gone but a
mile b sfore he would have commit¬
ted mi uder, and it was all done in
mercy.. God often deals with nis
children in a mysterious way, but
he deals with them ia mercy.
