MR, BAXTER
AT THE METHODIST
ON SUNDAY MORNING.
t; ri
J o
Rev. J. H. Baxter, the presiding
elder, preached at the Methodist
church • Carnesville on Sunday,
from the first chapter of Proverbs.
The text is too long to repeat here
and such of otir readers as desire to
do can read it
Mr. Baxter said: The word wis
dom as used in the text is nearly
synonymous with religion. The
wisdom of the old testament is the
religion of the new testament. A
wise man was one who knew some¬
thing of God. Wisdom is ptrsonis
fied in the text aud is represented as
pleading her own cause. It is not
God that is represented as speaking
to us, there are things said in the
text that God could not say. It is
religion speaking to us.
The first thing to be observed is
he faithful effort to turn men le
igious life. All kiods of men are
called to preach, and teach from the
pulpit. Logical men, impulsive
raeu, and imamative men, are all
called that all classes of 'men may
be reached. We could not ask that
more should be done.
The second thing to wcich lit ten*
tion is celled, is the classification of
the men who a:e not children of
God. The simpletons, the scorners
and the fools. Every ungodly per¬
sons belongs to one of these three
classes. A simpleton in the sense
ot the text is one who has not im>.
proved himself. He has the capac*.
lty to know, but has not informed
himself of God, and of salvation.
A fool is one Who has gone further
than the simpleton. He knows the
truth but does not Jive according
to the truth that he knows. He
knows of God, of heaven and hell,
and knows of Salvation but wil
not seek it. The man who knows
that he has an immortal soul, anc
< here comes to him all the instrumen¬
talities of salvation and he tarns his
back upon them all, is a fool in vhe
sense of the text. The scorners are
those who are so deeply rooted in
sin, that they hold rekgion m con
tempt. The people who can laugh
and sneer at religion are more offen
ive to God th an any beings who
live upon the earth or beneath the
sulfaroos waves of hell i
call of wisdom is to turn away
from sin, from bad habits and evil
ivmg. if you go on you are lost.
In that direction, there is darkness,
tempest, despair and death. The
>n»»iee is, if you will turn I will
*our oat upon you all that belongs
to a perfect religious life. The warn
og ift. I have called and you have
"sfoaed to turn. 1 have called by
the pulpits of all denominations, by
rirau* individuals and by my provi
< k*nce* and yon would not tun and 1
laugh at your calamity, mock
when your calamity cometh. It is
not God that will laugh aud mock, it

God punishes nobody. Nobody

to torment, jou, can’t lay it on God.
Every man is the architect of his
own destiny. It you go to ruin,.you
use God’s means to your own des¬
truction. If you have poverty,
wealth or ruin, you are the architect
arid make it yourself.
