Butter.
A certain farmer buried four or
five jars of butter last summer as
an experiment. Ife removed one
jar the other day and found the but
ter as (dean and sweet as the day
it was buried. II is plan was to
get a good sound jar, fill it with
butter, tie a cloth over the top, put
on a layer of salt about an inch
thick, tie a strong cloth over the
mouth of the jar, and bury the jar
four feet deep, mouth down, lie
thinks that butter put up in tin’s
shape can be kept pure and nice an
indefinite length of time.
Co-operation of the Wife.
No married man ever prospered
in the world without the co-opera
tion of his wile. If she unites in
mutual endeavors to reward his la
bors with an endearing smile, with
what Confidence will be resort to
his daily toil, meet difficulty and
encounter danger, if he knows that
he is not spending his strength in
vain, but that his labor will be re
warded by the sweets of homo?
Solicitude and disappointment en
ter the history of every man’s life;
and he is only half provided for the
voyage who finds but an associate
for happy hours, while for his
months of darkness and distress no
sympathetic partner is prepared.
Corn Bf.hr. — Boil a pint of good
sound coin until it becomes Soft
without bursting; add to it a quart
of good molasses ami one gallon
of water. But the corn, molasses
and waler in a.jug, shake it well,
ami 'll 21 hours the beer will be
excellent. When all the beer is
used just add more molasses and
water. Th • same corn will answer
tor several months, and after the
first time the beer will be fit for
use in 12 hours, in warm weather.
A gallon will not cost over 10 cents,
and a glass but a fraction over a
hall a cent. When well made, it
is better ami more wholesome
than cider.
Sowing Turnips.
I'he turnip crop is too often neg
lected, and no other crop pay« bet
ter lor the labor bestowed. In
some count l ies it is a standard crop,
and is relied upon as winter feed
tor sheep and cattle. With the
soil propeilx prepared, SOO bushels
per acre can be produced. I lie
best land for turnips is old manure
lots, but second vear’s land, of black,
calareotis or sandy loam, will often
yield immense crops ; and general
ly any good corn land will produce
turnips. They ri’.ny be sown from
the 1 ‘>lll of .1 une to the middle of
August in this latitude, about one
pint to the acre, broad cast, lightly
harrowed or brushed alter sowing,
with a top dressing of lime, ashes
orpli ter. One of our best farmers
has madu it a rule, lor many years.

Job’s Turkey.—We never could
see why people constantly accused
Job’s turkey of extreme poverty.
'Poor as job’s turkey,’ is applied to
every lout in town. There is noth
ing recorded that his domestic
fowl didn’t scratch around and get
plenty to eat regardless of the emp
ty smoke-house and crib of Job.
The relations of amity and com
merce between that turkey and its
master were obliged to be the same
as we find these days. Whilst Job
was lying up in the house applying
poultices and mustang liniment to
his boils, the turkey was in the
woods catching bugs and flying
over in to the neighbors’ corn fields
and helping himself, caring not a
button whether Job had one afflic
tion or a thousand. Besides, Job
never had a turkey after he -went
into bankruptcy.
