SCHLEY COUNTY NEWS,
o. T. WALKER, - - - Editor.
PRiN-CII-LKS 38K3T0H.8! u: 3IIST.
Bllaville. Ga,, August 24th, 1882.
As down in the sunless retreats of the ocean,
Sweet tlowrets are blooming no mortal can
see,
So deep in my bosom the. prayer of devotion,
l nlieard by the world, rises silent to thee.
Miss Katie Royal, step-daughter
of Col. C. B. Hudson, is quite ill with
typhoid fever.
Theke is some little rivalry among
the candidates for Representative.
Come out Saturday week and poll
)/our coat.
Tiupui* branch, upon which Mr.
Sam Smith has a gin and farm, rose
so high from Saturday’s rain that it
wiped tip his gin dam and field <>f
corn.
\Vk have been having entirely too
much rain for cotton, that which has
opened being near the ground is .sadly
stained, and where the weed is luxuri
ant the green bolls are rotting.
Bk careful and go slowly when you
try to connect a lady’s name disre
spectfully, lest yon tackle virtues that
hang above your head. “Refrain your
tongue from backbiting.” unless you
class yourself with bed-bugs and other
vermine.
The tent holders at. the camp ground
fed about twelve hundred persons last
Sunday at dinner, and about the same
number ate in the grove, making a
total of about twenty-four hundred.
The crowd increases every year, and
during the entire meeting there was
aboYkt as many as the commodious
stand could shelter.
Removal. —Dr. John E. Hall, who
is so well known throughout Schley
county, has removed to the door
above Shaw’s, on Forsyth St., where
he keeps one of the best selected
stocks of drugs known to our market,
and aside from which may he found a
choice stock of tobaccos, cigars and
garden seed, and a correct map of
Georgia. But John Pi. Hall is too well
known among us for further comment
from us, so hunt his new quarters.
Theke will be a public debate at
the Court-house, in Ellaville, <>n Sat
urday the Kith of September, at two
o’clock, i*. M. The query for debate
is, “Resolved, That woman’s intellect
is inferior to man’s.” \Y. 1). Murray
has been chosen to preside at the. oc
casion. The speakers for the affirma
tive are: Henry Lumpkin, James R.
Williams, C. R. McCrory and It. Pi
Williamson; Negative, Geo. Munroe,
Jr., Morgan McMichael, John M. fol
ium and V. B. Hudson, the public
is invited to attend, and especially
the ladies.
Airs. J. M. Coll urn, of Schley comi
ty, had a turkey gobler that went to
setting on a nest of guinea eggs and
hatched them, hut the hogs caught
all of them in a few days except one,
which he now places under his feath
ers upon Ids back every evening and
dies up into a tree to roost, and when
he reaches the limb that he wishes to
occupy, he takes out the little guinea
from his feathers and places it beside
him on the limb. This turkey does
not associate with the other turkeys,
but keeps busily employed in scratch
ing for hugs for his guinea.
C’aml'-Mkktino. —On last Friday
afternoon some of the tent-holders
loaded their wagons and landed at the
Buck Creek Camp-Ground, and by
Saturday afternoon all of the twenty
four large tents were tilled as follows:
Preachers tent, Snipes and Wall,
Snipes, Bridges and Snider, J.H.Biv
ins, Smith and Strange, Thos. Allen,
McCorkle and Re Vane, Murray and
Collins, Perry and Sons, Burton and
Scarborough, Walker and Tinsley,
Baisden, Mott aid Greene, Murphey
and Baisden, Strange and Moot, Dix
on and Cheney, Put. Stevens, Wesley
Myrick, Royal and Patton, MaUk
and Varner, McMichael and Hare,
Barrow, Goodson and Womack, and
Williamson and Gay. Besides L. A.
Rarsey and the four or live local
preachers, there were as visiting
ministers: J. M. Austin. J. <h A.
Cook, B. W. Key, J. K.Godfrey, Prof.
Chas. Lane, R. L. Wiggins, R. B.
Lester, W. I). Stewart; H. C. Fent
ress, T. S. Armstead, Geo. Williams,
J. E. Ware, J. B. Wardlaw, W. W.
Tidwell, J. Short, M. Hare, W. A:
Wheless, and George Thistlewood.
There seems to he considerable dem
onstrations there in a religious point,
and every arder seems to move quite
pacific up to ye local’s departure.
There is about room chough for six
more tents to complete the square,
and those who contemplate building
should not wait to see whether the
encampment will last or not, but go
rigid into it at once, build now and
fa; ready for next year. One need
not entertain any such idea that the
camp-ground will soon go down, for
the. prospects grow brighter every
year, and ere long we can boast of one
of the most, prosperous camp-grounds
