|ljc !mt |ejj#bllcs FOOD FOB THOUGHT. Heart-work must be God’s work. Absence of occupation is not rest. Apology is only egotism wrong side up. •I give him joy that’s awkward at a lie. ’Tis ever wrong to say a good man dies. A mind quite vacant is a mind dis tressed. Who can answer where any road leads to? What loneliness is more lonely than distrust? Faith and hope cure more diseases than medicine. There is no grief like the grief that does not speak. Vice itself loses half its evil by los ing all its grossness. Strive for the best, and provide against the worst. lie only is a well made man who has a good determination. Nature never rhymes her children, nor make two man alike. Of all the paths that lead to a wo man’s love, pity’s the straightest. Who ever knew truth put to the worse, in a free and open encounter? Nodding the head does not make the boat to row, says a Gaelic proverb. Many have lived on a pedestal who will never have a statue when dead. An evil speaker differs from an evil doer only in the want of opportunity. The means to promote any end are as necessary as the end to be promot ed. When duty seems to clash, “the moral law always has the right of way.” A man’s good breeding is the best security against other people’s ill man ners. He surely is most in want of an other’s patience who has none of his own. In the great inconstancy and crowd of events, nothing is certain except the past. Levity is often less foolish, and gravity less wise, than any of them appear. The children of to-day will be the architects of our country’s destiny in 1900. Our happiness and misery are trusted to our conduct, and make to depend up on it. Trust not to the omnipotence of gold, nor say unto it, “Thou art my confi dence.” • Every man is bound to tolerate the act of which he has himself given the example. Opportunity is a beacon light by which many are piloted to the harbor of success. How many lessons of faith and beauty we should lose if there were no Winter in our year! Activity is not proof of industry, any more than a handsome face is proof of a warm heart. A wiseman watches the development of his plans and then bends his ener gies to waiting. Christain piety annihilates the ego tism of the heart; worldly politeness veils and represses it. Our friends early appear to us as representatives of certain ideas, which they never pass or exceed. The Creator has gifted the whole universe with language, hut few ara the hearts that can interpret it. We are more sociable and get on bet ter and more agreeably with people by the heart than the intellect. When death, the great reconciler, has come, it is never our tenderness that we regret, but our severity. There is no trait more valuable than a determination to persevere when the right thing is to be accomplished. It is thought a disgrace to love unre quited. But the great will see that true love cannot be unrequited. Instead of complaining of the thorns among roses, we should he thankful there are roses among the thorns. Men who have the strongest intel lects have the weakest memories; they trust more invention than memory. Thirstiug for the golden fountain of the fable from how many streams have we turned away weary and in disgust! The heart is a loom and it may weave whatever it pleases. It may make a life a continual progress toward tri umph. St. Augustine describes the nature of God as a circle whose 'center was everywhere, and its circumference no where. The casting down of our own spirits in true humanity is but like throwing a ball on the ground, which makes it re-bound, the higher toward heaven. Truth is the food of the human spirit, which could not grow in its majestic proportions without clearer and more truthful views of God and His universe. Love does not aim simply at the conscious good of the beloved object; it is not satisfied without perfect loyalty of heart; it aims at its own complete ness. Our fellow-creatures can only judge of what we are from what we do; but in the eyes of our Maker what we do is of no worth except as it flows from what we are. Poverty is uncomfortable, but nine times out often, the best thing that can happen to a young man is to be tossed overboard and compelled to sink or swim for himself. The little flower that opens in the meadows lives and dies in a season; but what agencies have concentrated them selves to produce it! So the human soul lives in the midst of heavenly help.
