——— uMdtommmm —■ SCHLEY COIIWTY NEWS. G. T. WALKER, - - - - Editor. pitirrciPLES befobe J-rErsr. Ellaviik Ga., October 26th, 1882. How did the frost suit you last Wednesday morning. Capt. R. J. Redding, of Atlanta, is sojourning among us. Call and settle your notes and ac counts —they are due. B. A. Strange. “Are you going to theshow?” is all the go. It may be so, we really don’t know. . Everybody can have a chance to pay their taxes during Court at Ella ville next week. Correction. —M r. Perry Peacock was buried in the Ellaville Cemetery instead of at Fellowship. Since we are having a little cool weather it is to bo hoped we will not hear of so much sickness. The interesting part of our politics is just opening. It is found behind the screen that creates county officers. With the cotton crop turning out rather short and the price so low, it will trouble many farmers to “make ends meet.” Cane grinding is now the order of the day, to the delight of all; or, in other words, “the copies gwinc ’round and the juice pouring.” The many friends and admirers of W. W. Singleton, editor of the Marion County Argus, lament his sad death, which occurred on the 19th inst. Wiiiee you are taking down your seed cane be sure to save more than ever. Syrup is always worth from fifty to seventy-five cents per gallon. Next Monday Schley Superior Court convenes, and on Wednesday Judge C. F. Crisp will address our citizens in the Court House. Don’t neglect to hear him. There is some of Schley’s cotton still being shipped to Columbus. Our home markets will pay as much for good cotton as any, but those who are trying it, say that, it pays to ship low grades. liEt every farmer be sure to sow a patch of oats in November, as Spring oats may fail, and the crop is of too much importance to lose. Prepare your ground well, fertilize well and be ready in time. Many- have gathered their sweet potatoes and report that their crops are good. The trouble now is keeping them sound, and the idea is not to cover them too closely at first, but give them plenty of air, and at the same time protect them from the cold chilling air. The comet that may be seen in the east, of mornings, is creating much talk and writing. Every exchange has something to say about it. We would, venture to bet our last season’s hat that our wisest know but little more about comets than our ancestors did before breeches came in fashion. Mr. Ben. E. Prevatt, our old friend and school mate, and bride, are stop ping over a few days among us. Ben left us a feiv years ago, went to Flori da, got rich, established the South Florida Times, (a splendid paper) and is now returning from Columbus Ohio, where he recently married. Lots of good luck to you, Ben. “Peach Orchard,” the place known on the Ellaville and Buena Vista road by that name is no more; but instead we have Putnam. Mr. Putnam Stevens has succeeded in get ting a Postofiice there, and, contrary to expectations, the Postoffice Depart ment named it, and very appropriate ly, Putnam, after Mr. Stevens. FOR TAX COLLECTOR. Through the solicitation of many friends, I announce myself a candidate for the office of Tax Collector of Scliley county. I have not time and deem it unnecessary to canvass, and will rely upon my merits. Respectfully, oct2otde S. B. HALSTEAD. FOR TAX.COLLECTOR. Thankful for past favors I again offer my self as a candidate for Tax Collector of Schley county, hoping that the good citizens of the county will appreciate the afflictions of myself and wife and give me their sup port in the coming election. Yours, very respectfully, auglltde J. H. STEPHENS. Beautiful Women are made pallid and unattractive by functional irregularities, which Dr. Pierce’s “Favorite Prescription” will infaliibly cure.
