On Thursday night 3rd inst., at the residence of Col. Geo. W. Council, by Rev. Dr. T. 11. Stewart, Mr. A. S. Ansley, and Miss Rutiia A. Bar wick, all of Sumter county. Ed Ansley has the largest stock of Toys ever shown iff Americus. Look at the House. The scaffolding of the new building of Sheffield & Cos., is removed, and business begun in the street story. Every citizen of the city will gaze with admiration on the elegant struc ture. Mules Present or Accounted For. Mr. Clay Bagley, who had a mule to stray a week or more since, and a negro on another mule to stray after it, due advertisement being made in the Sumter Republican, regained his mules. , Leading Daily Papers for sale every day and Sunday too. Agnes Aycock . I William A, Trimble-Toe. It was said of William that he was a good fisherman, but it remained for Tobe Cobb to string a lot of humpback succors and firmly believe they were carp. Jesse Lee Kirnmey, a good judge of fish, says it was a very good / string of humpbacks. One hundred pair BLANKETS, i just opened, at J. Waxelbaum & Cos. Gray as Long as You Live. Colonel Davenport rallied a gentle man from Bottsford on his genteel appearance, and the black lustre of his hair and whiskers. In response the gentleman said, “Colonel, you’ll be gray as long as you live, and I’ll be black as long as I dye.” Important Business. This style of business called a brace of gent’s to Macon Wednesday night. It is presumable that still more‘im portant business will induce a trip to Union Springs, Ala., soon after the Commencement of Wesleyan Female College, in June, 1883. Don’t be in consolable, boys. Wheatley has added very largely to his already large stock of CLOTH ING, and is offering some rare bar gains, this week. The Gins are in Motion. On Wednesday last, Mr. H. S. Burke, near Preston, Webster county, put his left hand into a cotton gin, while running, and took it out very sud denly, badly cut up by the saws. He says that he don't care to feel into an other one, while it is eating, as the teeth are too sharp. Cali for the “Useful,” at J. Waxelbaum & Cos. Found Dead. George Hobbs, an old colored man, was found dead on the Ellaville road, near Barlow’s mill, Tuesday night. Coroner W. W. Guerry summoned a jury, had an inquest, the verdict of . which was: “We the jury find thatthe deceased came to his death from some cause unknown to the jury.” He showed no marks of personal violence. Be sure and try the DIAMOND CAROMEL, sold only by Ed Ansley. Jellies in all size packages from wine Glasses up to five pound buckets. The Little Reapers. “O, whore are the Reapers that gamer in, The sheafs of good from the fields of sin?” We have” a field “white unto the harvest” and we want the “Little Reapers” to be preparing themselves togarner it in. On our roll’book we have about seventy names, fifteen of whom are honorary members, but we are sure none of them will refuse to do their duty. We hope to be able soon to get all the members together, to discuss the merits of a specific work that wo have in view, and when the call is made let each and every mem ber respond in person ‘‘With sickles of truth to the work they come And none may rest till the harvest home.” Our books are open for new mem bers and we hope to have a largo num ber added to our list before we com mence our work. Yv’e would be more than pleased if tire parents would co operate witli us in this good work. Superintendent. Every lady needs a box of the “Useful,” at J. Waxelbaum & Cos. Mighty Dull. This has been the word ever since Barrett’s circus left Americus. Sat urday afterward was like Sabbath for the scarcity of people on the street, which has been the case during most of the present week. Not an item of news. An occasional mist has kept the dust down and Indian summer has tempered the ambient air, vegeta tion has continued to grow; but trade alas! has drooped. We may look for another collapse for ten days or more when Sells Brothers’ circus shall come aud go. Several thousand dollars taken frpm the weekly circulation in a laboring community will tell on the current trade. Locking at the Show Pictures. While the show men were engaged in putting on the circus display pic tures, a large number were close ob servers, negroes, merchants and law yers, and among them without hat, umbrella or coat, we noticed our dry goods merchant friend,on the corner of Forsyth and Jackson streets, and were surprised at the interest he displayed since he had had all opportunities north and south of satisfying his curi osity. We accounted for it, however, on the idea that he wanted to see if it come up to his display of dry goods. Eh, Thornt? FULTON MARKET BEEF. FRESII TENNESSEE and GILT EDGE BUTTER. BARREL PICKLES. NEW COUNTRY SYRUP. FRESH FISII & OYSTERS, every day at W. E TAYLOR. Nimrods. Messrs. Bugg Chapman and J. W. Wilkins, on the one part, Ben Mayo and Will Mims on the other part, made a descent on the swamps of the Thronateeska, twenty miles from Americus, on last Tuesday. Messrs. Chapman and Wilkins brought in for ty squirrels, six ducks and two turkies, that evening; the next day Mayo and Mims arrived in the city with fifty oue squirrels, forty partridges and live ducks. A pretty good shooting frolic. Fresh Salad Oil / oct2Btf at P. IT. WILLIAMS’. Major Black and the Postoffice. On Wednesday evening last, Major Black removed to his new quarters on Forsyth street. No doubt many will forgot this announcement and wend their way to the old office on Jackson street, discovering theirmistake when too late, will expedite their locomo tion with spices of expletive rhetoric. To avoid any extravagance of that sort remember the Postoffice is removed to the former cotton entrance of Ilar rold, Johnson & Cos. New line of Velvets, Plushes, Silks and Satins, just opened, at J. Waxelbaum & Cos. Premonitory. Tuesday morning opened up on a very different schedule from that of several weeks previous. A north easter curtained the heavens with drift clouds. Fires were in order, overcoats taken down and overshoes hunted up. What will be the sequel? Probably Monday morning we will have winter flags, frost and ice. Those who have potatoes to dig will not de lay to house this important crop. Seed cane is doubtless all bedded. DIED, Mrs. Rickett, wife of the gentleman of that name, who moved from Illinois last winter, and settled on the Crocker place, near Smithville, died on Sun day last. We regret this death on ac count of the fact that we were the beneficiaries by the advent of such good citizens as Mr. Rickett and fami ly. The loss to the community at Smithville is felt and their sympa thies are extended to the bereaved parties. CARPETS! CARPETS!! at J. Waxelbaum & Cos. Quick ancl Dextrous Work, We are informed, by persons pres ent, that Dr. Holloway extracted fourteen teeth from one lady’s mouth in one moment, and ten from her sis ters mouth in three-quarters of a niiu utes’ time, one day this week. They were under cloroforin treatment. This is quick work by an accomplish ed artist and there is no need of going seventy or a hundred miles to get Dental work that can bo done better’ and at less cost in Americus than any where else. Real Estate for Sale. We call attention in this issue to the Administrator’s sale in December next, of the lands and tenement? of the late J. J. Hudson. These lands are desirably and conveniently sit uated on the eastern suburb of Ameri cus. They contain handsome sites for building, improved lots, plats adapted to dairy and stock farms. Timber privileges. These lands are very valuable and will soon be in ae tivo demand, as the population and business necessities of Americus in crease. Now is the time to buy, as the administrators are anxious, to close up the business of the estate, and lands are just feeling the accent of increased demand. Mr. J. I. Hud son, who lives in the midst of these lands, and is familiar with the bounds and metes, as also the conditions and terms, will give all necessary informa tion to purchasers. The aggregate number of acres is six hundred sixty two and one-eight. DON’T buy your Black Cashmeres until you have examined Wheatley’s stock. Many ladies have saved 15 to 20 per cent, by buying there. A Malarious Dog. Mr. F. 11. Buchanan, a prominent merchant of this place, had a puppy, given to his little boy recently. This animal was so mischievous that his wife gave it away to an old negro, who worked, in the day time on his place, on condition she was not to let his son know what had become of it. The other day they asked her about the puppy, “well” replied Aunt Har riet, “I wan’t you to take it back. Its so bad, he bit my old man on the leg and he is down sick of it. lie bit my son John on the arm and he is having chills from it, I want you to take it back. They didn’t do it. Remember we are not compelled, as great many are, to make our profits and living out of any one lino of goods; but dealing in so many differ ent lines, we are able to sell goods at closer margains than the houses that keep but one line; divide our profits, give our customers the benefit and still live. J. Waxelbaum A Cos. Liable to Arrest. Thursday morning as “ye local” approached the temple of justice in search of items, he met inside the sacred enclosure two mules and a wagon, without a driver. They ap peared to be prospecting. They found a good place for hungry mules. We compliment the enterprise of the mulesjand, as the fence is down, com mend the place to all mules that feed on grass. On a Rush. The job department of the Repub lican is literally crowded so that our Mr. Standfield cannot keep up with his work. We would call in assistance, but asitis conceded by all. that since Lewis Andrews has left Georgia, there is not his equal in the State, we beg of our friends to patient ly wait for a few days and their work shall be done in a Style that cannot be approached by any shop in the city. Good Georgia Seed Rye, © 1 ..CO Per I{nsliel. oct2Stf at P. 11. WILLIAMS’. Judge Mize’s Court. Thursday morning this Court pre sented the appearance of abandon ment, as we saw more lawyers than clients. Our new and urbane land lord of the Barlow House was the only one that showed impatience, as he was held to answer certain garnish ments. lie looked like he had much rather be at the Barlow House wel coming guests. County Court. Judge Pilsbury held the Novem ber term of lii.s court for the consider ation of the civil docket. The adju dications being over, court was ad journed to the next regular term on Thursday afternoon. Under the sample system adopted by this house, they can offer the very latest patterns in numberless varieties, and never fail to please. " Venus. .
