Call for the “Useful,” at J. Waxelbaum & Cos. No iHarm Done. The infant son of Mr. B. M. Baiford, that was reported badly burned, we are gladtosay, was but little damaged and is at this present bright and lively. Recovered. Mr. Charles Greene, of.Lee county, who was sick of hemorrhagic fever, at the residence of his brother-in-law, Mr. Neil Carter, of this place, lias re covered. Only new stock of Toys in the city at Ed Ansley’s. Convalescing, Mrs. W. 13. Brown, who lias been quite sick for a week, we are glad to hear, is now rapidly improving. Newly mar.'ied folks can enjoy health as well as anybody. Close Kin. Monday opened with a dasli of the spiritus borias. The colloquy of two darkies explains, “Jack you seen any frost?” “No, hut soin’n close kin to it, the dew is most frost.” New line of Velvets, Plushes, Silks and Satins, just opened, at __ J. Waxelbaum & Cos. Saturday Last. The country was pretty well, repre sented on Saturday by the usual in flux from the surrounding country. There was, however, no news of im portance to titilatc the pencil by the gatherer. Removal. V*. 13. Hinton removes from Amer icus to Macon county, to be nearer the centre of his business. Our good wishes go with him as we consider him a worthy man and a good citizen any where. Fine Apples. Mr. E. 11. Brown, just from Florida, showed us some fine apples from the orchard of Governor Drew. The Governor lives not far from the Sa vannah river, and it was a surprise to see apples so fine from Florida. Go to Thornton Wheatley’s for best Kid Gloves, Bernhardt, Morquetam, and lace top kids, beautiful shades. Cucumbers. Samp. Boone rejoiced in cucum bers at dinner from his garden on the Oth of November. Many have toma toes, but cucumbers are uncommon at this season. It only shows what nature and climate will do forusifwe will but give them an opportunity. Bridge Over Line Creek. Bud White, James M. Moore and Jas. Howard have built a bridge over Line creek at Lewis crossing by pri vate enterprise. This entitles these gentlemen to the thanks of a large citizenship who have been at great inconvenience by the wantof a bridge at this place. Withdrawn. Col. B. B. Hinton has withdrawn, in the interest of peace, from the judi cial struggle before the Legislature. Colonel Hinton would have adorned the judicial ermine of Georgia, he is a man of peace and not disposed to politics. Doubtless his course is the product of good philosophy, and will conduce to that quiet which his late health experiences demand so much. MESS MACKEREL, BUCKWHEAT, FULTON MARKET BEEF, MURPHY’S DRIED BEEF, GOLD MEDAL FLOUR, BoSWOUTH <fc JoMREY. Not a Candidate. As it has been announced that J udge J. A. Ansley was a candidate for the Judgeship in the Southwestern Judi cial Circuit, he desires it contradict ed. He is not a candidate for that office, but as soon as the legislature shall elect a Judge and he has been qualified, Judge Ansley will retire, and for the future devote his atten tion to the practice of law as before. CARPETS! CARPETS!! at J. Waxelbaum & Cos. The Southern Surgical Institute, of Atlanta, Dr. J. W. Gurley, of the Southern Surgical Institute, Atlanta, Ga., was in the city a few days of last week. His room at the Barlow House was crowded most of the time lie was here* by the afflicted. Some of those who visited him expect to give the Insti tute a trial, while others are undecid ed. There are some who have suffer ed long from chronic diseases, who say that they were relieved by his treatment. The Institute is a blessing to cripples and the deformed. Many who have been there have been cured of their deformities and made whole. The blind, in some instances, have received their sight; the deaf have been made to hear, and the halt and lame to leap and walk. Joy has filled the hearts of the despondents who have been treated there, and many throughout the land will bless the Southern Surgical Institute as long as life lasts for the benefits derived there. We would advise those suffering from diseases of any form to consult with Dr. Gurley, of the above Institute, for you may derive great benefit in doing so. Every lady needs a box of the “Useful,” at J. Waxelbaum & Cos. Died—Walter Rylander. Died at the Perry House, on Satur day morning the 4th inst,, Mr. Walter Rylander, of hemorrhagic fever. He was about twenty years of age, and had acquired the confidence of all wno had employed him, as well for his general competence and trust worthness, as for ids amiable and equible nature. At the time of his death lie was in the service of the Southwestern Railroad, and in a fair way of promotion. He had many friends among those of his age in this place. His remains were carried to Oak Grove Cemetery at 10:30 a. m., Sunday morning, and a large number of citizens, together with the sorrow ing family, attended. 11. 11. Collier, Ed. Ansley, O. D. Reese, Tommy Stallings, O. 13. Ansley, and A. C. Bivins acted as pall-hearers. Rev. G. F. Cooper gave a brief sketch of his life and character, and a very ap propriate discourse of warning to all. Whatever comfort comes of kind and respectful sympathies from a commu nity, to which we join our own, is cer tainly demonstrated to a sorrowing circle of relatives. Be sure and try the DIAMOND GAROMEL, sold only by Ed Ansley. Jellies in all size packages from wine Glasses up to five pound buckets. Never Tired. On Monday of last week, Wesley Woods, son of the Sumter county col ored giant, Willis Woods, walked from the lower edge of Worth county, a distance of over fifty miles, reached bis father’s home, near Americus, about eight o’clock, ate bis supper, called the dogs and went o’possum hunting. During his tramp he walk ed twenty miles more, caught eight o’possums, returned home, dressed them and spent the remainder of Tuesday in walking the streets of Americus trying to sell them. Tues day night he was ready to start on another hunt, but the old man ob jected: “I’se ’fraid you’ll break de dogs down and wear yerself out.” “No, sir; I’se as fresh now as I was when I started from Worf; and never was tired in my life,” was the reply. Lea & Perrin’s *Sauce, Cross & Blackwell’s Pickles, Pickles in Barrels, Olive Oil, Tomato Catsup. BoSWQRTIi & Jossey. The Big Gourd. Lish Barker has brought in his big gourd and it is on exhibition at the Republican office. Thegourd holds a bushel and a half by actual meas urement of shelled corn. Those who doubt can have their skepticism re moved. Sumter county furnished the largest yam potato that was on exhibition at the Exposition in At lanta which weighed 18} ibs. If any body from any county in Georgia can show a bigger gourd let him come to the front and contest. Give Him the Cake. Mr. Jno. Walters, now with J. L. Price at his warehouse in Americus, pn Friday night last concluded that he certainly was going to die that night, got up, dressed himself, told his wife that he would not leave her alone in so trying a situation, went out to get parties to set up with his remains. This was considerate to a degree unparalleled. We think is entitled to take the cake. He was Saturday as well as usual and admits the truth of the statement above. CLOTHING! CLOTHING!! For Children, Boys, Youths and Gents, at J. Waxelbaum & Cos. Losing Baggage. We have heard several parties who came to Americus last week on a visit to friends here, complaining of the loss of their baggage. This does not often iiappen to commercial tourists or parties whose business carries them daily from city to city, but only to those who only make visits at long intervals. Why is this? We can give no better reason than to say that regu lar travelers have their baggage care fully and plainly marked. Purchasing Plow Lines. Our planters have beeh for days, as they were ready, purchasing plow lines for the fall campaign. This is gratifying. Let the rust-proof go in freely and take the chances of even a failure by drought in the crop. When this is done you also have a drawing in the lottery of success. A fine crop of oats last year brought you all stand ing up; now, then, another crop of like proportions to subsidize your corn crop of the coming year, will cut another bond of dependence on the west. It will ensure fat mules, an in creased number of fat hogs, fat milch cows, a good conscience and no appre hension from the law forbidding cruel ty to animals. Let the oats go in and take the worst result incident to the crop, to-wit, drought, you will still have your land in fine condition to plant a crop of cotton or corn either— peas, potatoes, and ground-peas, all have abundant time to make. Let the oats go in. Selah! Remember we are not compelled, as great many are, to make our profits and living out of any one line of goods; but dealing in so many differ ent lines, we are able to sell goods at closer margains than the houses that keep but one line; divide our profits, give our customers the benefit and still live. J. Waxelbaum & Cos. Judge Sloan and the Possum. Judge Sloan of the twenty-eighth District relates an attack lie made on a possum. This animal has some in stincts in common with man, and what is esteemed the better class of men, to-wit, preachers, and Methodist preachers particularly. While he may be like the Hardshell in clinging on and holding fast, no matter what the inducements to fall. lie nevertheless loves chicken and it was for the grat ification of this taste that the possum above was found late at night in the Judge’s henhouse, the Judge used a pistol to bring down his smiling ene my. Now whether he carried the pis tol in an open and exposed manner or whether it was a horseman pistol did not transpire. The Judge smacked his mouth and said he had eaten a part of that possum for breakfast. SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT ! JOHN R. This is admitted to be a remarkably good crop year; and if you do not square up your business under these favorable circumstances you likely never will. “Money Bags” will draw a large crowd at the; Opera House Friday night. It is said that the late style of ladies’ shoes will be square toed and made without heels. It is not very proba ble that the ladies will ever adopt a shoe so shapeless. Indiana has a law to prevent weak minded people marrying. A crusty bachelor insinuates that the weak minded are the only persons who ever think of marrying. Don’t forget to secure seats in time to see “Money Bags,” at the Opera House Friday night. Thanks to our neighbor, Mrs. J. M. Simmons, for an excellent dinner sent us yesterday. Among the deli cacies were a number of birds, killed by her son Walter. Such favors are highly appreciated by the Editor. We will rent you a bran new pair of Opera Glasses Friday night, for only 25c. Early risers assert that the comet is shaking sparks from its tail like a sky-rocket. It will have to get up a regular fourth of July pyrotechnic display, however, to induce the ma jority of mankind to leave their beds these frosty mornings. Time passes rapidly. The spring time came with its sunny showers. The autumn is here with its decay, and the winter will soon be upon iis with its chilling blasts and snow storms. The seasons teach us lessons if we are only willing to learn them. If you want to enjoy a hearty laugh, go to the Opera House Friday night and see Lamb and Shannon in “Mon ey Bags.” Two or three of the most desirable dwelling houses in the city, within five minutes walk of the square, all in perfect order, will be rented low to a good tenant. By reason of her peculiar relations, and her peculiar ailments, woman has been com pelled to suffer, not only her own ills, but those arising from the want of knowledge, or of consideration on the part of those with whom she stands connected in the social organization. The frequent and distressing irregularities peculiar to her sex have thus been aggravated to a degree which no lan guage can express. In the mansions of the ricli and the hovel of the poor alike, woman lias been the patient victim of ills unknown to man, and which none hut she could en dure—and without a remedy.
