||jje |mnter Republican. FOOD FOB THOUGHT. Courage our greatest failings dees supply. With good men religion will be the first consideration. I would rather be beaten in right than succeed in wrong. We are never without a man or a motto to shottt over. For the noblest man that lives there still remains a conflict. If you are not too large for the place you are too small for it. The most manifest sign of wisdom is continued cheerfulness. Make not thy friends too cheap to thee, nor thyself to thy friends. Everybody knows good counsel ex cept him that hath need of it. A judicious silence is better than truth spoken without charity. Idleness is the refuge of weak minds and the holiday of fools. Butter was used by the early Romans as medicine, never as food. Present evils always seem gearter than those that never come. The secret of felicity is a judicious interruption of routine. A man without secrecy is an open letter for everyone to read. Fortune has rarely condescended to be the companion of genius. Speaking truth is like writing fair, and comes only by practice. The mother of useful art is necessity; that of the fine arts is luxury. We should believe in works; words are sold or nothing everywhere- Things don't turn up in this world * unless somebody turns them up. Discouragement seizes us only when we can no longer count on chance. Happy are they that hear their de tractions, and can put them to mending. Sensitive people wish to be lovedjvain people wish only to be preferred. Act upon your o.wn impulses, but pray that they maybe directed by God. On the neck of the young man spar kles no gem so precious as enterprise. Troubles borrowed and stolen out number by far all others in the world. Luck is an “Ignis-fatuus.” You may follow it to ruin, but never to suc cess. Francis Murphy, the Amercan tem perance lecturer, is at work in Scot land. Nature has sometimes made a fool, but a coxcomb is always of a man’s own making. In friendship the stongest attachment yields to resistance; in love it is the contrary. It is one of the precious mysteries of sorrow that it finds solace m unselfish thought. Truth is so related and colored that no department of her realm is wholly isolated. Are not flowers the stars of the earth, and are not our stars the flowers of heaven?. Conversation enriches the under standing, but solitude is the school of genius. People seldom improve when they have no other model than themselves to copy. An Arkansas Boy. Arkansas Traveller. “Pa,” said the Rev. Mulkittle’s son, “Samson was a strong man, wasn’t he?” “Yes Samson was the strongest man that ever lived.” “Tell me about him.” “It was intended that Samson should be the strongest man, and be fore he was born—” The bewildered expression on the child’s face arrested the minister in his narration. “Before he was born?” asked the boy. “Yes; before—that i*, before he was found in a hollow stum—” “Just like little sister.” “Yes; just before he was found an angel appeared and foretold of his strength, saying that no razor must touch hia head.” “Was the angel afraid that the razor would cut him?” “No; the angel meant his strength lay in his hair, and that his hair must not be cut off. , “It I let my hair grow long, can I lift more than I can now?” “I don’t know about that.” “Are women stronger than men?” "No.” “But they’ve got longer hair.” “Yes; they have longer hair.” “A woman couldn’t whip you could she!” “No; not easily.” “Was Samson a democrat?” “I don’t know.” “But why don’t you know? I’d know if I was as old as you. How many men was it that Samson killed?” “One thousand.” “He was bad, wasn’t he?” “No.” “But when a man kills anybody he’s bad.” “The Lord was with Samson.” “But the Lord says you musn’t kill anybody. Did Samson go to heaven?” “I suppose so.” “He is the strongest angel there, ain’t he?” “You are getting foolish again.” “But I want to know. Will yon know Samson when you go to heaven?” “I suppose so.” “But you won’t fool around him, will you? If he wuster hit you he’d break your wings, wouldn’t he?” “Go to your mother. The next time you attempt to question me about the Bible I shall whip you.” Drugs and Patent Medicines can be bought cheap for cash, at Dr. Eldridge’s Drug Store.
