They were Poor Boys.
An exchange recalls the following
historical facts, which should tncour
age every young man struggling under
discouragement and povority:
John Adams, second President, was
the son of a farmer of very moderate
means. The only start he had was his
education.
Andrew Jackson was born in a log
hut in North Carolina, and was raised
in the piny woods, for which that
State is so famous.
James K. Polk spent the earlier
years of his life helping to dig a living
out of anew farm in North Carolina.
He was afterwards a clerk in a country
store.
Millard Filmore was the son of a
New York farmer, and his house was
a very humble one. He learned the
business of clothier.
James Buchanan was born in a small
town among the Alleghany mountains.
His father cut the logs and built bis
own house, in what was then a wilder
ness.
Abraham Lincoln was the sou of a
very poor Kentucky farmer, and lived
in a log cabin until he was twenty-one
years of age.
Andrew Johnson was apprenticed to
a tailor at the ago of ten years by his
widowed mother. He was never able
to attend school, and picked up all the
education he ever got.
The list is very good as far as it
goes, but it can be extended almost in
definitely.
Captain Kidd, whose reputation as
a pirate is second to none, was a poor
boy. His parents were in such bumble
circumstances that he was obliged to
steal from perfect strangers the money
with which to buy dime novels, and
yet see what he accomplished!
Jesse James, who might be Govern
or of Missouri but for his untimely de
cease, was a poor hoy. He was so
poor that he had to borrow the pistol
with which to shoot an obnoxious
school teacher who gave him impudence.
Benedict Arnold was the son of very
poor parents, and yet his name will go
down into history, not along side pre
cisely, hut just below those of Wash
ington, Jefferson, and the rest of them.
Dorsey had a hard struggle in early
life, but by perseverance, and having
reduced plunder to a system, he has
acquired so much wealth that lie can
set the United States at defiance. As
he is a comparatively young man, he
may yet be President.
Jay Gould used to shine his own
boots, but now he takes the shine off
all the other millionaires.
When he was a boy, Boss Tweed
was almost as poor as a Greenback
speech.
Nero used to peddle peanuts and sell
“Sketches from Texas Sifting” in the
cars.
Oliver Cromwell had to borrow his
brother’s pants when he, Oliver, went
to halls and parties.
Governor Roberts used to go bare
footed in summer time when he was a
boy.
We might go on and cite any num
ber of men who have climbed the lad
der of fame, whose pants needed repairs
when they began to climb at the lower
round of the ladder. There is no trouble
in being poor. Almost anybody can
be poor, particularly if they have some
assistance from their parents in early
life.— Texas Siftings.
Kiss Me Good Bye, Dear.
Detroit Free Press.
This is the phrase heard in the hall
way of many a home as the man of the
house is hurrying away to exchange
daily labor for daily bread in the mart
of commerce. Sometimes it is the wife
who says it, sometimes infant lips prat
tle the caressing word, holding up a
sweet flower face, for the kiss that is
its warm sunshine of life, and the strong
man waits a moment to clasp his treas
ures and is gone; and all day he won
dered at the peace in his heart, and the
nerve with which he met business cross
es. The wife’s kiss did it, the baby’s
kiss did it, and he realized that it is
not wealth or position or luck that
makes our happiness, but the influence
we bear within us from the presence of
those we love.
Kiss me good-bye! Oh, lips that
have said it for the last time, would
you ever ask again in those pleading
tones for the kiss so tardily given?
Would we not remember that the re
lation the flower bears to the universe
is as carefully provided for as that of
the brighest star; that the little action
of a loving heart goes side by Bide with
the heroic worth; that love is the dew
of life; that the parting for a day may
be the parting for a lifesime.
“How many go forth in the morning.
That ne ter come home at night?
And hearts that have broken
For kind words spoken
That sorrow can ne’er set light.”
Make the air vocal with kisses!
Many tears have been shed over kissed
kisses—over those “dear as remember
ed kisses after death,” but the time to
kiss is the present. Kiss you children
men of business, before you leave home;
kiss the old mother who sits in the
chair by the window—no matter if hei
cheek is wrinkled her hearf is young—
and then go about your day’s work
with a “thank God” in your soul that
yon have someone home to kiss.
“For though in quiet evening
And gave us the kiss of peace,
Tet it might he
That never for thee
Tlie pain of heart should cease.”
Mb. W. H. Bakrett, Augusta, Gn.,

WOMAN.
itope for Still, rill Woman—Souio
tiling Nrw liidcr the Sun.
By reason of her peculiar relations, and
her peculiar ailments, woman has been com
pelled to suffer, not only her own ills, but
those arising from the want of knowledge,
or of consideration on the part, of those with
whom she stands connected in the social
organization. The frequent and distressing
irregularities peculiar to her sex have thus
been aggravated to a degree which no lan
guage can express. In the mansions of the
rich and the hovel of the poor alike, woman
has been the patient victim of ills unknown
to m. i) and which none but she could en
dure—and without a remedy. But now the
hour ot her redemption has come. She need
notsuffer longer, when she can find relief
