About Bees.
Below are given some directions for
fertilizing bees in confinement, which
has been regarded by many as impossi
ble; Procure a wire cloth dish-cover
nine or ten inches in diameter, fasten
to a piece of thin board, with a door
made in the board large enough to put
in your fist, and you will have as good
a fertilizer as can be made. They cost,
generally, only 30 cents each. If no
dish-covers are to be had, make a cage
of fine wire cloth, 12 to 14 inches long
by 6 to 8 inches in diameter, fasten on
the inside of the fertilizer a piece of
empty comb (drone comb is the best) 3
or 4 inches square, which, when requir
ed for use, fill with honey and water,
taking pains not to spill any honey
about, or the Queen and drone become
daubed up so ag to prevent them from
flying.
On the morning of the day a queen
is to leave the hive, usnally the fifth
day after hatching, catch her and put
her with four or five selected drones in
the fertilizer. The drones that are to
be put with the young queens should
be good, vigorour fellows, and should
be caught as they are about to leave
the hive. Those returning from a trip
will not answer, as they are too much
fatigued. Lay the fertilizer, when fix
ed, so the warm air can get into it over
the frames of the hives, to which the
young queen belongs; if a dish-cover
fertilizer, put the rounding side down
ward. The fertilizer can he put on
any hive. I have put three on one
hive at a time.
Put on the cap, which should have
an opening in the side or top, covered
with glass, to admit light. Leave her
there thirty-six or forty-eight hours,
the shorter time usually answers. At
the end of that time, if a dead drone is
found, examine it, and if the sentinals
are gone, release the queen, and she
goes down into the hive and commences
to lay in a few days; or give the bees of
a nucleus a dose of smoke, and put her
with them until required. If you doubt
whether she has become fertile, and
think she will leave the hive to meet
the drones, clip her wing, or shut up
the hive until she begins to lay, as I
have often done, and your doubts will
vanish quickly. ■
The important discovery is this:
“The queens will be fertilized in con
finement if shut up at about the time
they would have flown, with four
or five selected drones,” no matter how
the thing is managed or what kind ot a
fertilizer is used. I look upon it as
the most important discovery that has
ever been made in bee culture, as it
prevents all loss of queens by flying
away, and enables us to breed bees
with as much certainty as can be done
with horses, cattle or other stock.

A Reminiscence of the Senate.
Courier Journal.
Early in the year 1835 an amusing
colloquy took place in the Senate be
tween Henry Clay and James Buchan
an. The latter, when a young man,
belonged to the Federal party. He
was defending himself against the
charge of disloyalty during the war of
1812. To prove his loyalty, he stated
that he entered a company of volun
teers at the time the British attacked
Baltimore, or at the time of the battle
of North point, and marched to Balti
more. “True,” he said “he was not
in any engagement, as the British had
retreated before he got there.” Mr.
Clay—“ You marched to Baltimore,
though?” Mr. Buchanan—“ Yes.”
Mr. Clay—“ Armed and equipped?”
Mr. Buchanan—“ Yes.” Mr. Clay—
“ Will the Senator from Pennsylvania
be good enough to inform us whether
the British retreated in consequence of
his valiantly marching to the relief of
Baltimore, or whether he marched to
the relief of Baltimore in consequence
of the British having already retreat
ed?” This colloquy, with its unlook
ed-for ending, was greatly enjoyed by
the Senate and galleries, and put both
in excellent humor,
A little four-year-old discovered the
neighbor’s hens in her yard scratching.
In a most indignant tone she reported
to her mother that Mrs. Smith’s hens
were “wiping their feet on our grass.”
A company of settlers, in naming
their new town, called it Dictionary,
because, as they said, “that’s the only
place where peace, prosperity, and hap
piness are always found.”
"How clumsy you are !” said the
mistress at the table, as the waiter
spilt the sauce over a guest’s rich
dress. “There won’t be sauce enough
to go round, now.”
It is not easy to be a widow, she must
reassume all the modesty of girlhood,
without being allowed to feign its ig
norance.
WOMAN.
Better than the smiles of Kings.
To bring health and happiness to the
homes of suffering women is a mission be
fore which royal favor sinks into insignifi
cance. What earthly benefaction can com
pare with one which protects from
“That dire disease whose ruthless power
Withers beauty’s tsansient flower?”
which gives ease for pain, joy for sorrow,
smiles for tears, the roses of health for the
Sailor of disease, the light elastic step for
ragging weariness, nights of soft repose for
heavy hours of tossing restlessness, bound
ing vigor for languishing dulnes3, the swell
ing lines of full grown beauty for the sharp
and withered form of emaciation, a long life
of mental, physical, social and domestic en
joyments for a few sad days of pain and
gloom, ending in an early grave? Such is the
mission, such are the resultt of Dr. J. Brad
field’s Female Regulator, which is hence
truly and appropriately styled “Woman’s
Best Friend.”
“Whites,” and all those irregularities of
the womb so destructive to the health, happi
ness and beauty of women, disappear like
magic before a single bottle of this wonder
ful compound. Physicians prescribe it.
