We do not mean slut is on the verge of bankruptcy, for she is not. There is no town in the state in a better condition financially; she owes nothing, mill bus money in her treas ury. But wo repeat that Cedartowu is in a dangerous condition I We all know tlmt every town is liable to fires. As long ns u chimney points heavenward aud sparks ily upward, there will be defective fines and obimlieyB, and as a consequence, con flagrations. Say some, we ore insured and if ft fire docs come we'll be all right. Poor argument. No companies fully in- suro n mail. No man can burn with out being loser. So then, we can never be ready ior u lire. The next tiling that should suggest itself is tlmt the town should prepare for these dire disasters. If the people of this plaee could be brought to see the absolute necessity for a better protection, not a month would roll around before a band engine would be purchased, a ladder house built and tire cisterns dug. To the honorable gentlemen com posing the Council we would say that we are in earnest about this matter. Wo do not speak advisedly, but we give it us our opinion that the amount would be suved the town in the lessening of insurance rates with in a period of four or five years. At leust three large cisterns should be dug. The spring would answer in its neighborhood. These cisterns could be completed for say two hun dred dollars. A band engine suffi ciently large could be delivered hefe for four hundred dollars. Seventy- five dollars in ladders and fifty dol lars for a house to always keep them in except when wanted. Fof seven hundred and fifty dollars we could be made comparatively safe from u disastrous conflagration. Shall we doit? Gentlemen, these are but hints by the way. Who will mate rialize them.
