Houghton, Mr. llobt. DeJournette of Rome, Ga., to Miss Victoria Clover of Dallas, Tex. Robert, we wish thee and thy fair bride a full measure of all the hnp- pine,8 contained in this world below. Mr. II. Harpold, Rome, Ga. While in Rome last week we called upon Mr. II: Harpold, the dry goods prince of the town. We had to wait for at least an hour before he could give us an audience. He and his clerks were over-rum with business. A oonstant stream of customers was pouring in to view the heavily laden counters and shelves. We had no cenceptiou of the great variety of dress goods it took to muke up assortment. Mr. Harpold 1ms the heaviest stock of ladies’ goods in the city. His prices are low, and no one need go there and not be suited as regards assortment, quality and prices. He has lately gone into the Silk dress trade. His assortment of silks is splendid. The only objection we can find to his business is that he was too busy to advertise. This is a rarity these hard times. We give him credit for this, however, and trust that whenever we call on him again he will favor us with a card. If any of our ladies should go a-sbop- ping to Rome, they will call r we know, on H. Harpold. for the courts and one which we will not meddle with upon the evidence of rumors and vague reports. Wo think that wo express the feelings of many of our citizens in tendering onr sympathies to Horatio and Clau dius and in sincerely hoping that they are not guilty. Messrs John M. King and W. J. Head represents tho defendants and Murdock McBride and Walker Brook the prosecution before the committal. The trial opens this morning at nine o’clock. Full particulars next week. CEDARTOWN. We acknowledge the receipt of a cablegram from the Czar, asking us what we would do about it now, but we can see there is going to be a long diplometic war over the question, and we don’t propose to be dragged iuto it. Your correspondent stopped from his labors for a lit.tie recreation, and wont as a deleigate to the Cherokee Presbytery, at Enharlec last week. Having to go down in the morning, and the meeting of the Presbytery not convening till night, 1 kept on to Oartersvillo, and found that thriv ing place alive to business. The merchants seemed to have full stocks, and I suppose from what. I saw, were doing a line business. I also found a great many of the delegates to the Presbytery bad arrived from up and down the State Road, waiting for the Oh rokee Railroad to carry them out. Through th • kindness and hospitality of the presbyterinns, there, we were all treated to a most excellent dinner, after which the time for the starting of the train having arrived, and all on board, we were soon landed at Stilesboro depot, where the delegates were met by the citizens of Eubarleo and carried over to the beautiful little village of Eu- harlee, and unsigned to their respec tive homes during the meeting, nnd to enjoy the hospitality of the place, which seemed to be unbounded. At the hour of 74 o’clock, p. in., Wednesday, April LOih, the Presby tery was opened with a sermon by Rev. W. A. Milner from Hebrews 8th, 1st and 2nd. Subject, Pries- hood of Christ, after which the Pres bytery was constituted witli prayer. Rev. J. E. Jones was elected Moder ator, and Rev. Then. E. Smith, Clerk. Ministers present.—Rev. J W Ba ker, S E Axon, T E Smith, T 0 Crawford, D L Butall, II G Johnson, J E Jones, S W Newsell and W M M Caldwell, with a like number of ruling elders. The business of flic Presbytery was carrie i on under the oontroll of Rev. J E Janes, as Moderator, with precision, good order and hastily, at same time everything was done with moderation and wisdom, There was three other assigned sermons preached during tho meet ing. One on Friday morning by Rev. S. E. Axon on the education of the Ministry. One on Saturday morning by Rev. W. M. M. .Cald well on the Sabbath .Schools in con nection with the Church. One on Sabbath morning by Rev. J. W. Ba ker, Missionary Sermon. All of which done credit to the Reverend gentlemen who delivered them. For me to undertake to give anything like a synoysis of one or all them, 1 think would be injustice to them. They were only heard to be appreci ated. All felt that it was good to be there. The Presbytery adjourned on Sab bath night to convene again at Sar dis Church, in Floyd county, on the 3rd day October next, at 74 o’clock p. in. At Harronsburg, Ky., on Monday, Isaiah Gabbart, who was shot on Sunday in the Public Bquare by Henry Noel, diod of his wounds. The combat took place in the presence of many citizens, and had its origin in an election. The men met, and ad vancing towards one another, fired every chamber of their respective re volvers, then clinched and fought it out by using the pistols as clubs. When separated it was ascertained Gabbart had been mortally wounded. Dying, he exonerated Noel. “My dear,” said a husband, in startling tones, alter awakening his wife in the night, “I have swallowed a dose of strychnine!” “Well then, do for goodness sake lie still, or it might corns up!” V. It is a charucteris.ic of the human race to dislike efiort. If wo had the power in our bauds, we would ban ish labor and its host of car«s from this world. So heavily does the load of indolence test upon us that it. is the great struggle of life.to ressist its depressing influfirtta Indolence is man’s greatestToe in this matter of effort, and he is a brave man who wins the day. Here is tho origin ol more than half the troubles of unsuo- cessfnl men. They submit rather than exert themselves. There are a thou sand foBoiimtim* forms in which the tempter allures ns. lie bids us wait a “more convenient season,” Or “wait u rrti HwiTHUtlrin gTtrrnTu p7 - 'Go rite fit yourself with making good resolu tions to do better to day, leave their performance to the future. “But be not deceived if you plant hot, neither will you reap.” In the great field of life happiness and prosperity come only to those who sow the seed of diligence. Gain, then occupy the portion Heaven has assigned you; enrich the soil, til! it faithfully; cut down the weeds, and reap the har vest which must inevitably be yours. Again the world’s wisdom is, that “wlmt is worth having is worth working hard for.” We prize things in proportion to what they cost us. Labor sweetens the reward. Enjoy ment is relative in its nature, it is not huw much wo have, but how much it costs us which furnishes the highest pleasure. That is no gains, which falls to us* indeed it cannot be. Remember then, that the richest in thought end knowledge, in power and. wealth, who 1 works thtt most persistently. Perse vere, persist, and never give up the ilict until the victory is yours. Count not the cost of the efiort, nor be dismayed by the magnitude of the enterprise. “Where there is a will there is a way.” “He can, who thinks he can.” We often wonder that, that was not dono before which we considered impossible be fore we undertook it. Energy ia ac complishing every day things which a few years ago would have been considered the greatost of miracles. In achievement there seems to be no limit to man. Why? simply be cause of his indomitable energy, or iu other words, the pains it takes to succeed. Take this factor out, and man be gins to retrograte. Right here is the difference iu men. All are the ar chitects of their own fortunes. All must quarry out of the mine of self, the stone? which are to build up character. Hew then with might and main. Remember, that “labor conquers all things.” Remember, that this world of ours is under an inflexible law of rewards and pun ishments which dispenses the gains only to those who work. Cui Bono.
