The Fall Elections.
The fall elections of 1878 promise
to be tho most holly contested for
many years past. They will forever
decide the fate for weal or for woo of
of tho Republican party. Tho Sen
ate will bo Democratic in ’80, and if
tho Democrats can just hold tho
House the iinal victory will be assu
red. But there is tho rub. Will the
House bo Democratic? (treat fears
are entertained by the lenders of our
party that unless tho Democracy are
united tho Republicans will gain tho
day.
Any one can tell you how closely
tho Republicans stick together. They
mny differ about the means but they
all as a unit seek the same ond and
they vote fora man advocating that
end. Like a certain church we
could name—there are no splits, no
divisions when it comes to church
government. Ho it is with the Re
publican party
The Democrats on the other hand
are careless and unconcerned. They
had better bo concerned and that at
once. While our party is lazing and
listlessly wandering about, the Re
publicans are ut work. As at the
outset, we say the next elections will
be of all the most important. It will
bo for supremacy.
If wc fail to carry the House, then
■might we ns well give np the ghost.
« What, then, is the next question
■that suggests itself. It is that we
look around ns and as apart//, as tho
Democratic party; select our enndi-
-dale and vote for him. Don’t lot us
have a split umongst ourselves. Let
tthe Democrats be united.
We know the feeling in this dis
ci. Wp kuowitbat Dr. Felton has
on elected over the regulujr nomi
nee. We know that many Demo
crats good and true voted for Dr. Fel-
toif. The Doctor lias had a fair
chanca. He has Berved ns now for
two terms; cannot some one else be
found in the district upon whom
Democrats can unite, equally as good
as he? Rotation in office proves ben
eficial. Let a Democrat from some
ether county besides Bartow run the
race. Bartow has run tho thing
long enough. Hlie has enjoyed the
spoils of the monopoly loug enough.
We venture to say that, leaving Dr.
Feltoif out, she still would want to
foist a Bartow man upon us. We
write this with no special unfriend
liness to Bartow county.
That Dr. Felton has made a good
congressman, no one will deny.
That there are other men in the dist
rict as good as he none can deny.
But further: Cun not there be
something brought about to re-unite
the Democrats? Has there been
anything wrong in our mode of
nominations? Then let us correct
it. Has there been any trickery
shown ? Then let us abandon it.
Concession is tho thing. We are
striving for the same end, or should
be so doing. Our aim is to wipe out
Radicalism and its counterpart,
Orantism, from the land. Then let
08 meet and oonsider. This should
not resolve itself into a Felton fight,
or who-ever-he-may-be fight. We
should organize, re-unite, clasp
hands, lot by-gones be by-gonos, and
the dead past bury its dead, and re
solve anew our journey to pursue to
vote squarely on the Democratic
tioket. We all must make conces
sions. This is intended for the or
ganized and the independents—most
all of whom are Democrats. Now,
as to the mode. If there be a con
vention, let it be one of the people—
of the Democrats. Leteaoh militia
district be represented. Let the
ptopile instruct their delegates. Let
•aoh delegate know the wishes of
.his constituents, and let him go to
the convention and vote their senti
ments. If a majority of the instruct
ed delegates vote for Dr. Felton, then
Felton is the man. If they vote Job
Blaxck, then Blance will be the
man, and so on. We will then bo a
re-united party and will go forward,
hand in hand, to a full realization of
the joys and pleasures of a saved
country in the near at hand future.
We give these random thoughts for
what they are worth. Wo would
that our friends could fully realize
the importance of the situation and
the grave condition our country is
What Does it Mean ?—Is the
Constitution going the way of tho
News and Commonwealth and Trib
une ? It says:
Wo never expect to see tho day
when another Georgia district is car
ried by an independent candidate.”
If it is alive and kicking next No
vember, tho probability is it will see
three or four Congressmen of that
ilk; and if it survives a brief period
longer it iB quite possible it will see

And now a word, in conclusion,
as to the Express.
As in the past, so in the future,
ths Express will support the nomi
nee of the Democratic party. We
shall, in a quiet way, do what we
can in his behalf. We have friends
who honestly differ with us. With
these we have no quarrel. Wo ac
cord every man the right to enter
tain any opinions ho may see proper
We do not propose to tear our but
tons off during the campaign, for
there aro other matters that should
he treated of along from week to
week. We state here that our col
umns are open to any and every
body. We will us readily admit con
trary opinions to ours as favorable
At the same time tho Ex
press is an organized Democratic
sheet, and will support the Demo
cratic nominee, whoever he may be.
The Ga. Press Association.
We shall be absent for a few days
in attendance upon the Georgia
Press Association. The Doctors have
had their fun; the Sunday Schools
them j i nd the Churches theirs, and
now it remains for weary and care
worn knights of the quill to throw
away care and feast upon the fat of
tho land. Tho Convention met in
Gaiii8ville yesterday. Excursions
have been arranged to Greenvillo, S*
C., Richmond, Va., perhaps Wash
ington, D. C. and on their return,
Gov. Brown “sets up” an excursion
to Lookout mountain. Wo hope to
have a jolly time and of the events
along tho line we shall have more to
say hereafter.
«3T A nominee for Congress can
b(; elected in November if the Dem
ocrats of tho district will rally to bis
support.

Honor to Whom Honor Is Dno.
The outside world usually know nothing c
paratlvoly of what la going on and Is being accom
plished In tho medical profession,
Tho “busy man” of tho nineteenth century
hasn't the time nor inclination to examine oven
suporflclally its llterrture. Then It is not surpris
ing that members of tho profession occasionally
become famous while tho general public remain In
almost perfect Ignorance of thnlr world-wide co-
lebrlty. These truths apply to pome extent to a
distinguished physician of our own section, Dr.
Robert Unttoy. The European world 1ms enrolled
his name among the great of his professlon-a
profession which he loves with the forvor and
warmth of a mother’s lovo for her offspring. Wo
trust, then, thai the charge of invidious distinction
will not bo alleged against ns of his own Immedi
ate section for nddlng our feeble meed ol praise in
this hasty notice of one who so eminently deserves
tho plaudits of his countrymen.
We^challcngo contradiction whf n wo assert that
Dr. Battoy has made more reputation sinco the
close of our late war than any rnembsr of tho Amer
ican profession; and we, with equal confidence,
declare that no member of tho medical profession
across tho Atlantic has deue so much to advance
tho science of medicine and ameliorate the suffer
ings which flesh is heir to during tho past few
years, aB has Dr. Battey. We have .recently read
with great pleasure an exceedingly interesting bi
ographical sketch of the “Life and Labors” of Dr.
Battoy, .written by our beloved teacher, the vonera-
blo Prof. Joseph A. Evo, of Augusta, Ga., and pub
lished In tho Virginia Medical Monthly. Prof.
Eve,the purest and V^blesl Roman of them all,”
and the oldest teacher on this continent In his
specialty—has faithfully collated and chronicled
the labors or Dr. Battey. It might be Interesting,
Instructive, to traco Dr. Battoy through
his early career, as revolved In this article, from
tho friendless and orphaned boy to tho “dry goods
clerk” through his apprenticeship as a "drug clerk'
to hie final triumph over all obstacles and difficul
ties, emerging the eminent and distinguished pli
sysian, hut space forbids.
Dr, Battey’s discoveries, inventions and im
provements In mcdiclue and surgery have been
submitted to the criticism of tho Bavanin or tho
medical world, and they have been pronounced
“good.” Dr. Marion Sims, of New York, in the
British Mpdlcal Journal for December, 1877, says:
"Dr. Battey has own the honors, let him wear
them.” While Dr. Battey has been a general
practitioner of medicine during his entire profes
sional life, we believe his great forte Is surgery.
He has roost happily combined the judgment and
erudition of a Gross, the steady nerve and artistic
skill of a Pancoast, coupled with the boldness and
fearloss intrepidity of a Valeutino Mott.
Dr. Battey’s private and social.Ilfo Is os beauti
ful as his public careor is great and brilliant. As
gentle and modest In manners as a woman, he is
easily approached by the younger members of his
profession, and la ever happy to impart his knowl
edge and lend bis experience for their advance
ment. By his teal, indefatigable labor and earnest
love for his profession ho has placed his name
alongside of the greatost benefactors of tho med
ical profession, where It can never fade nor die.
The following graceful tribute we quote from
Dr. Eve: "Dr. Battey fondly asseverates that tho
science of medicine Is Indebted not so mnch to
himself as to bis good wife who, by relieving him
of all domestic care and anxieties, as well ashy her
wise counsol, her loving help and hsrapprOvIng
smiles, has constantly stimila(ed him to bis best
endeavors.” ’‘ Manicys.
